Popular Sovereignty – the people have the power in their government

Republicanism – people exercise their power by voting for their political representatives

Federalism – power is divided between the federal government and the state governments

Separation of Powers – power is divided among 3 branches to keep the government limited

Checks and Balanceseach branch can check, or control, the power of the other branches

Limited Governmenteveryone must obey the law, including all government officials

Individual Rights – each citizen has personal freedoms that are protected by the Bill of Rights
