Lesson Plan Structure:
(Five Minutes) Students come in and sit in six pre-assigned groups, with document packages already on the desks in each group. Class begins with a Warm-Up or Do Now handout which involves the following question:
The Nazis targeted many groups of people during the Holocaust. Write about the victim group that your table has been assigned and explain:
Why you think the Nazis targeted that group of people
Which ONE aspect of the ideologies listed below that they most likely used to justify their actions.
Group Assignments are:
Group 1: Soviet Prisoners of War
Group 2: Poles
Group 3: Jehovah’s Witnesses
Group 4: Handicapped
Group 5: Homosexuals
Group 6: Gypsies
(Three Minutes) Spend 3 minutes letting the groups discuss their conclusions and decide what one ideology the group feels the Nazis used to target the victim group.
(Five Minutes) Spend five minutes discussing student responses and writing them down on the board or overhead. Students record the preliminary conclusion the groups reached on each victim group on the chart provided for them on the back of the handout. The chart looks like this:
