Gracious God, look on N., whom you created in your image, and claimed as your own through baptism. Comfort her/him with the promise of life eternal, made sure in the death and resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Eternal God, our help in every time of trouble, send your Holy Spirit to comfort and strengthen us, that we may have hope of life eternal and trust in your goodness and mercy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Jesus said, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest." Let us pray for our brother/sister N., that he/she may rest from his/her labors, and enter into the light of God's eternal rest. Receive, O Lord, your servant, for he/she returns to you. May he/she hear your words of welcome, "Come, you blessed of my Father," and receive the unfading crown of glory. May the angels surround him/her and the saints welcome him/her in peace.
Gracious God, in whose presence live all who die in the Lord, receive our brother/sister N., into your merciful arms, and the joys of your heavenly home. May he/she and all the departed rest in your peace. Amen.
I lift my heart and mind to you. The living God of never failing love. Give me strength for this day, to weep when I should weep, to accept the comfort that memories bring, to face decisions with courage, to meet people - those love me, those who want to help me, those who want to comfort me but I don't know what to say. Thank you for them all. O God, help me so that having your peace, I may be able to comfort others.
Psalm 129 (130)
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord,
Lord, hear my voice! O let your ears be attentive To the voice of my pleading. If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness: For this we revere you. My soul is waiting for the Lord, I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord More than watchman for daybreak. Let the watchman count on daybreak And Israel on the Lord. Because with the Lord there is mercy And fullness of redemption. Israel indeed he will redeem From all its iniquity.
O Lord the giver of all life, I thank you for the love I have known and the joys and sorrows shared. I accept, Lord, that you have taken the life that you once gave. Please bring gentle healing to the hurt that comes with parting. Thank you Lord Jesus, that you care about me.
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
For a Person in Trouble or Bereavement
O merciful Father, who taught us in your holy Word that you would not willingly affict us, look with pity upon the sorrows of (name) for whom our prayers are offered. Remember her/him, O Lord, in mercy, nourish her/his soul with patience, comfort her/him with a sense of your goodness, lift up your countenance upon her/him, and give her/him peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For the Bereaved
O merciful God, you teach us in your Holy Word that you do not willingly afflict or grieve your children. Look with pity on the sorrows of N., your servant, for whom we pray. Remember him/her, O Lord, in mercy. Strengthen him/her in patience, comfort him/her with the memory of your goodness, let your presence shine on him/her, and give him/her peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Holy Spirit, You are the nourishment of our spiritual needs. Only You, as You come, induce us to the practice of prayer.
Sometimes, like today, the wish to pray gets weak because we get depressed when we submerge ourselves relentlessly in the darkness of the faith while compulsively increasing the wish to touch and see something that gives us the strength and trust. We get more desperate when nothing happens and the silence gets amplified and eternal.
At this moment, blow over us with strength and lift us, don't let us fall, please.
Come Holy Spirit, make your clear rain soak us with the eternal desire so in our hearts we can have only one goal: to feel your INFINITE MERCY.
Come. Help us to walk, heal our hearts. Fortify us, encourage us, break the hardness of our feelings of pride and sufficiency so we can give up the daily attachments, to make Your will, to know how to discern and essentially accomplish what is so difficult for us: the spontaneous and sincere attitude of being open to the sweetness and crosses of the Kingdom.
Spirit for Whom everything is possible because you knew how to listen to the Father and to the Son, give us daily energy and strength to face the events and to read them all as teaching and transforming messages from the One who loves us indefatigably. Spirit, Messenger and Mediator, don't let that our human nature, selfish and capricious, can determine our personality. By the contrary, fight it where it is strong and use our weak points to eliminate the attitudes and behaviour that separate us from the kingdom and let us enjoy the wonders that come from the grace and the sanctity.
May Your grace allow us to take time to have a prayerful and persevering attitude. That we don't get discouraged by the apparent silence of God, because He always says that not one prayer is lost. Make that we believe this at all time. Nothing is wasted, absolutely nothing.
Spirit of light and wisdom, dwell in us and give us the grace of being certain that You always answer and that You help us always even when we don't realise it.
Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger, turn away from wrath; fret not, for it only leads to evil.”
For those in Distress
Almighty and everlasting God, the comfort of the sad, the strength of those who suffer, let the prayers of your children who cry out of any tribulation come to you. To every soul that is distressed, grant mercy, grant relief, grant refreshment; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer in Time of Suffering
Behold me, my beloved Jesus, weighed down under the burden of my trials and sufferings, I cast myself at Your feet, that You may renew my strength and my courage, while I rest here in Your Presence.
Permit me to lay down my cross in Your Sacred Heart, for only Your infinite goodness can sustain me; only Your love can help me bear my cross; only Your powerful hand can lighten its weight.
O Divine King, Jesus, whose heart is so compassionate to the afflicted, I wish to live in You; suffer and die in You. During my life be to me my model and my support; at the hour of my death, be my hope and my refuge.
For when you are Depressed
God, life seems so bleak and useless right now. I don't have any energy. I have no ambition to do much of anything. I am really feeling down. I feel "down on" myself and "down on" everyone around me. Even as I pray, I don't sense your presence. I am going through the motions, knowing that you are still with me.
I know that I am sacred and precious but they are just words right now. I know that my life has been worthwhile, full of many wonderful people and experiences, much happiness and joy. I feel little of this right now. God, all I can do is affirm the goodness of life and try to hold on until the darkness is replaced by your light and love.
Help me to spot the lies that my depressed emotions are telling me. Life is good. I am good. You are good. Grant me hope. My loved ones love me. Life will be beautiful again. Soon, I will see the beauty around me again. Soon, I will again know vitality and purpose, happiness and love. Until then, give me the strength and hope to survive this day.
Help me to smile and laugh, even if just for a moment. Be my strength and salvation. I ask you to restore me and make me whole. Fill me with the Word and the Spirit that I might be recreated anew. I praise and thank you. Amen.
Prayer At the time of a Bereavement
WE GIVE THEM back to you, dear Lord, who gave them to us.
Yet as you do not lose them in giving, so we have not lost them by their return.
Not as the world gives do you give, O Lover of souls. What you gave you do not take away; for what is ours is ours always, if we are yours. And life is eternal, and love is immortal, and death is only an horizon, and an horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.
Lift us, strong Son of God, that we may see farther.
Cleanse our eyes that we may see more clearly.
Draw us closer to yourself that we may know ourselves nearer to them.
And while you are preparing a place for us, prepare us for that happy place, that where they are and you are, we too may be; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
ALMIGHTY GOD, we rejoice to know
that your reign extends far beyond the limits of this life.
In the mystery of what lies beyond our sight
we pray that your love may complete its work
in those whose days on earth are done;
and grant that we who serve you now in this world
may at last share with them
the glories of your heavenly kingdom;
through the love of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Prayer for the Courage to Go On
When I am lonely and,
Perhaps I feel despair.
Let not my ailing heart forget,
That YOU hear every prayer..
Some folly I commit.
But help me to regret my wrong,
And to make up for it..
Inspire me to put my fears,
Upon a hidden shelf,
And in the future never to
Be sorry for myself.
Give me the restful sleep I need,
Before another dawn,
And bless me in the morning with
The Courage To Go On..
Prayer for Mourners
you are attentive to the voice of our pleading.
Let us find in your Son comfort in our sadness, certainty in our doubt, and courage to live through this hour. Make our faith strong through Christ our Lord.
Lord, [ Name ] is gone now from this earthly dwelling,
and has left behind those who mourn his/her absence.
Grant that we may hold his/her memory dear, never bitter for what we have lost nor in regret for the past, but always in hope of the eternal kingdom where you will bring us together again. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Prayer of Commendation
Go forth, Christian soul, from this world
in the name of God the almighty Father, who created you, in the name of Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who suffered for you, in the name of the Holy Spirit, who was poured out upon you,
May you live in peace this day, may your home be with God in Zion, with Mary, the virgin Mother of God, with Joseph and all the angels and saints.
Prayer for a Happy Death
O God, great and omnipotent judge of the living and the dead, we are to appear before you after this short life to render an account of our works.
Give us the grace to prepare for our last hour by a devout and holy life, and protect us against a sudden and un-provided death.
Let us remember our frailty and mortality, that we may always live in the ways of your commandments.
Teach us to "watch and pray" (Luke 21:36),
that when your summons comes for our departure from this world, we may go forth to meet you, experience a merciful judgment, and rejoice in everlasting happiness.
