Stokely Carmichael – Carmichael was a black civil rights activist in the 1960's. He was the leader of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee and did a lot of work with Martin Luther King Jr., but later changed his attitude. Carmichael urged giving up peaceful demonstrations and encouraged pursuing “black power.” He was known for saying, "Black power will smash everything Western civilization has created.”
Eugene McCarthy – American military leaders responded to the Tet Offensive with a request for 200,000 more troops, and Johnson began to doubt seriously the wisdom of continuing the pattern of escalation. The president was meanwhile being challenged from within his own party as Euguene McCarthy emerged as a contender for the 1968 presidential nomination. Bobby Kennedy also decided to run for nomination. Refusing to allow greater escalation, Johnson announced on March 31, 1968 that he would begin slowing down the Vietnam war effort, and that he would not be a candidate for the presidency in 1968.
