Civil Rights Act 1964 – Johnson said that in memory of JFK a Civil Rights Bill should be passed, and after much debate the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed. The act banned racial discrimination in most private facilities open to the public, including restaurants, hospitals and theaters. It created a federal Equal Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to eliminate discrimination in hiring. In addition, the legislation prohibited sexual as well as racial discrimination. In 1965, LBJ also issued an executive order requiring all federal contractors to take “affirmative action” against discrimination.
