Guadalcanal – American leapfrogging toward Tokyo ceased at the well defended Japanese island of Guadalcanal when American ambitions of securing the island as a base overruled the consequences on August 7, 1942. Americans won at Guadalcanal in February 9, 1943 and then got New Guinea by August 1944. By island hopping, the U.S. also retook the Aleutian Islands of Attu and Kiska in August of 1943, and in November of that year, “bloody Tarawa” and Makin, members of the Gilbert Islands, fell to the Allies.

Iwo Jima - On March 1945, Iwo Jima was captured; this 25-day assault left over 4,000 Americans dead.

House Committee on Un-America Activities (HUAC) – The House of Representatives in 1938 had set up a Committee on Un-American Activities, to investigate “subversion.” Richard M Nixon was an ambition red-catcher on the committee, and in 1948 led an investigation against Alger Hiss, who was convicted of perjury in 1950 and sentenced to 5 years in prison.
