AP Language and Composition Summer 2013 Assignment

Directions: Read the following speeches and letters and then write a two-page (one side per page), typed essay in MLA format based on the prompt.

Readings:

Malcolm X’s December 4th, 1963 speech God’s Judgement of White America (The Chickens Come Home to Roost)

Malcolm X’s April 3rd, 1964 speech The Ballot or the Bullet

Martin Luther King’s April 16th, 1963 Letter from a Birmingham Jail

Website: these three sources can be found all over the Internet but there will be a downloadable Microsoft word version plus a web/text version at Ms. Bui’s website: www.msbui.weebly.com . You will also find a link to MLA format at this website.

Prompt: The civil rights movement was one of the most powerful movements in American history and produced a number of great leaders. Two of the most famous leaders are Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. However, these two leaders had very different views on how to handle the problem of segregation in the United States. Read the selected speeches from Malcolm X and then read Dr. Martin Luther King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Then, in a two page, MLA format essay, compare and contrast each leader’s approach to civil rights and their desired outcomes.

Grading: This essay will be your first class grade for AP Language and Composition no matter what teacher you are assigned (there will be two sections). It is due, printed, on the first day of class, in class, not after.
