Ancient Civilization Research Project
DUE DATE: YOUR CIVILIZATION: __________________________
For this project, you will work in a group of 3 students. You will choose an ancient civilization (Rome, India, Greece, China, The Maya, The Inca, The Aztec, Nubia/Kush, and Mesopotamia, Egypt, or a civilization of your choosing that is CLEARED by the teacher. At the end of this packet is a rubric. Use this as your guideline for your project.
You will be responsible for the following categories: Attached are more specific questions to help guide your research.

Religion (who did they worship? Where?)

Geography (location, climate)

Daily and Family Life (what roles did family members play? What did they do for fun? Occupations?)

Social Structure (ex. classes, slaves, women, government, who ruled)

Inventions
-
Fashion (ex. Clothing, hairstyles, jewellery)
-
Food (what foods did they eat?)
-
Art & Architecture (buildings, construction, homes)
-
Any other category that you feel is important to your civilization
For your project you should:

Use a VARIETY OF SOURCES. For example, books, internet sites, magazines, and maps.

Create a BIBLIOGRAPHY page. Must include: type of source, title of source, author and publishing year.

Create a PROJECT PORTFOLIO – in this folder/binder you will compile your research notes, planning sheets, copies of your PowerPoint or Scrapbook pages and a self evaluation.

MAKE A SCRAP BOOK/PowerPoint or choose a different project to compose with teacher approval – Use the scrapbook paper. You may choose to keep the full size or cut to a smaller size to fit in the standard page protectors.

Summarize all your information in your OWN WORDS. RETELL the information that you have gathered on your topic. Underline all titles, dates, subtitles, and include pictures where possible. Include a map of the ancient civilization you are responsible for.

Include a 1-2 paragraph WRITTEN COMPARISON of an ancient structure from your ancient civilization and a modern structure from today’s civilization (remember to include a photograph or drawing of each structure)

Include a VISUAL DISPLAY: Within your scrapbook or PowerPoint, you must use graphs, timelines, diagrams, maps, pictures, illustrations, etc., that will help the reader and audience gain a visual understanding of the topic. Some people may want to include some 3-dimensional or 2-dimensional models, pictures, figurines or souvenirs that you may have created or collected for your project

Be prepared for an ORAL PRESENTATION:
~include a large map of the ancient civilization you are responsible for
~remember to speak slowly, clearly, and use your visual aids and written report as aids
~remember tone and level of your voice, eye contact and facial expressions
~be prepared to answer questions from your classmates AFTER your presentation
~to be very effective, you may dress up in costume
INDIVIDUAL: 5 Paragraph Essay

In this paper, you will write about the three aspects of your civilization you found most interesting – each topic will be 1 paragraph (for a total of 3 body paragraphs).
-
For example: I will choose to write about Egypt fashion, art and architecture as well as the daily life of a Pharaoh. Each topic will become 1 body paragraph.

Include a BIBLIOGRAPHY and GLOSSARY page at the back of your written report - essay. You should include all NEW vocabulary words and their definitions on the glossary page.
