Problematising management knowledge: By undermining the various assumptions on which management knowledge is based it is possible to influence its future development and so change the practice of management from within one of the primary sites of its reproduction, the academy (Antonacopoulou 1999). A more adversarial version of this project might be termed intellectual Luddism, jamming the theoretical machinery on which managerialism depends so bringing about its end.

  • Critique for critique’s sake: Maintaining a critical posture towards any kind of dominant knowledge is a worthwhile intellectual project in its own right and needs no further justification. In fact forms of closer engagement with management risk becoming contaminated by management (Fournier and Grey 2000).
