Holy Relics - Some objects can indeed carry spiritual power such as Moses rod (Exodus 4:1-5, 20 17:5,6, ) the bronze serpent (Numbers 21:9) anointing oil (Mark 6:13, James 5:14-16), Paul’s handkerchiefs (Acts 19:11,12), Peter’s shadow (Acts 5:15,16) and the bones of Elisha ( 1 Kings 13:21). But when they are worshiped as relics they must be destroyed even in their origin was holy and good. (2 Kings 18:4) Thus “power objects’ are NEVER to be venerated and the Catholic doctrine of the veneration of images is wrong.
Shrines: Shrines are local sites where an idol is venerated. They are a place where spiritual transactions take place, the ATM’s of the spiritual world – in this case the demonic world. In the Old Testament shrines are always viewed negatively : (Ezekiel 16:23-24 NKJV) "Then it was so, after all your wickedness; 'Woe, woe to you!' says the Lord GOD; {24} "that you also built for yourself a shrine, and made a high place for yourself in every street. Since the resurrection of Jesus Christ and Pentecost Christians have become the true shrines of the living God and our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19, 2 Corinthians 6:16). It is Christians, not shrines, that have the power to bring blessing to the world ( 1 Peter 3:9) and none of the apostles went to a shrine to be blessed or to honor God. Stephen referring to the Jewish temple said: (Acts 7:48-49 NKJV) "However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says: {49} 'Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. What house will you build for Me? says the LORD, Or what is the place of My rest?. Paul demolished the Greek notion of temples when he spoke to the philosophers on Mar’s Hill: (Acts 17:24-25 NKJV) "God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. {25} "Nor is He worshiped with men's hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. Thus Christians are not to build shrines or temples or any physical “sacred house” for God to dwell in or seek blessing at. We should tear down shrines, particularly those that contain idols. ( Exodus 34:12,13 Judges 6:25, 2 Kings 10:27 23:19).
