Susanna had Nathaniel, b. 14 Feb. bapt. 12 Mar. 1643, wh. d. bef. his f.; Lydia, 1, bapt. 7 Dec. 1645; John, bapt. 12 July 1648 a. 5 days old; Simon, 28 Apr. 1654; Gamaliel, 26 Mar. 1657; and Joseph, 29 July 1662; perhaps others; in B. was a tanner. In his will of 1 Apr. 1678, pro. 3 Jan 1680, names w. Susanna, eldest s. Gamaliel, and Joseph, and d. Elizabeth Rust.
THOMAS, Plymouth, came in the Mayflower 1620, with s. Joseph, and d. early next yr. But Bradford informs us that "the rest of his childr. came over, are m. and have [1650] many ch." THOMAS, Watertown, 1636, freem. 17 May 1637, d. or was bur. 12 Nov. 1638, aged 50, says Bond, and his wid. Grace m. William Palmer. THOMAS, Scituate, s. of the first John of the same, Deane says, had a fam. of wh. was descend. to our day. THOMAS, Saco 1652, was constable 1659. His h. was burn. by the Ind. Oct. 1676. THOMAS, Eastham, s. of Joseph the first, m. 13 Dec. 1665, Elizabeth Snow, had Elizabeth b. 8 Oct. 1666; Joseph, 1 Feb. 1668; Hannah, 20 Mar. 1669 or 70; Thomas, 6 Mar. 1671, d. in few days; Thomas, again, 6 May 1672; Eleazer, 3 Nov. 1673; and Nathaniel, 18 Jan. 1676. His w. d. 16 June 1678. THOMAS, Newbury, s. of Robert, perhaps in 1691 taxed at Rowley, m. 18 May 1677, Ruth Brown, had Thomas, b. 14 Aug. 1678; Ruth, 16 Apr. 1680; Susanna, 17 Mar. 1682; Robert, 5 Apr. 1684; John. 11 July 1686; Isaac, 21 June 1691; Stephen, 20 Aug. 1693; Daniel, 14 Nov. 1695; and Jonathan, 18 June 1702. TIMOTHY, Boston, s. of Rev. Nathaniel, a merch. 1665-88, was not among household. 1695. WILLIAM, York, was adm. freem. 1652. WILLIAM, Boston, Farmer says, had sev. ch. b. there, and d. 13 July 1664; but I doubt he relied on informat. that has not reached me. WILLIAM, Boston, merch. by w. Susanna, if that name be not wrong, had Mary, b. 9 Apr. 1667; perhaps had sec. w. at least m. 22 Apr. 1676, inv. of his est. was taken by his wid. Margaret, wh. had one s. by him, and wh. on 4 May foll. was appoint. admin. and she had bef. 30 Jan. foll. m. William Snelling. WILLIAM, Charlestown 1678, may have rem. to Reading. WILLIAM, Nantucket, m. Martha, d. of Robert Barnard, had Experience, a d. b. 23 July 1673; Ebenezer, 5 Jan. 1676; Orange; Martha; and Mary; and d. 23 Mar. 1718. In his MS. Farmer obs. that of this name 54 had been gr. of which 37 were of Harv. 10 of Yale; and that 15 of these were clerg. of wh. I count 12 at Harv. ROISE or ROYCE, ISAAC, New London, s. of Robert, m. 15 Dec. 1669, Elizabeth eldest d. of Samuel Lothrop, had Robert, and three other ch. and rem. to Wallingford, d. 1681. DANIEL Ipswich, s. prob. of the preced. may be that s.-in-law of Robert Collins, k. in Philip's war. HENRY, Newbury, one of the early sett. prob. from Co. Wilts, with w. and childr. of wh. John, Benjamin, and Hannah, wh. m. the first Richard Dole, are kn. d. 1 Mar. 1643; in his will of 15 Feb. preced. beside w. and ch. he names br. John and neph. John Saunders, and calls Thomas Whittier, kinsman. Perhaps his wid. was Honour, wh. d. at Charlestown, 19 Dec. 1650. JOHN, Newbury, br. of the preced. came in the Confidence 1638, from Southampton, aged 50, in the custom ho. call. husbandman of Melchit Park, Wilts, with w. Ann, d. Esther, and serv. Thomas Whittier, call. Whittle in Geneal, Reg. V. 440, and XIV. 335, was freem. 6 Sept. 1639, by our Secr. spell. Roffe, as at the Southampton custom h. Mr. Somerby in Geneal. Reg. V. 440, assures us it was Roaf, correcting Mr. Steven's eyesight in II. 109, Mr. Drake says, Geneal. Reg. XIV. 335, it was Roaff, vindicating the honor of Mr. Somerby's vision; in ea. of the three cases, no doubt, foll. the sound, as it reach. the ear of the subordinate official, bec. one of the earliest propr. of Salisbury, there taxed 1650 and 2; perhaps had sec. w. Esther, wh. d. 3 June 1647; in July 1663, he was one of the proprs. of Nantucket, and d. 8 Feb. 1664. His d. Esther m. John Saunders. But of ano. JOHN of Newbury, prob. s. of Henry, we hear, that he m. 4 Dec. 1656, Mary Scullard, possib. d. of Samuel, had Mary, b. 2 Nov. 1658, d. next mo.; Mary, again, 16 Jan. 1660; and Rebecca, 9 Feb. 1662; and Coffin thot. him br. of Henry, to wh. I discern obj. Ano. JOHN, Nantucket, may have gone from Newbury, but at the first nam. place had John, b. 5 Mar. 1664; Samuel, 8 Mar. 1665; Sarah, 2 Dec. 1667; Joseph, 12 Mar. 1670; and Hannah, 5 Feb. 1672; possib. may have gone back to Newbury, and been the man wh. Coffin says d. 30 Sept. 1681. Yet of ano. JOHN of Newbury, if he be not one of the preced. C. tells us that he had w. Dorothy, and s. John, b. 24 Mar. 1691; and Jonathan 2 Aug. 1695. Farmer names Thomas of Ipswich 1648, but he eludes my search, unless he be the man of Guilford, wh. had m. Elizabeth Disbrow, and for some heinous offence ran off for refuge to the col. of Rhode Island, and so his w. obt. divorce, 1 Oct. 1651, by the jurisdict. of New Haven col. resum. her maiden name, and m. John Johnson of the same town, and she d. 23 Dec. 1669. Four of this name had, in 1834, been gr. at Harv. and three at the other N. E. coll. ROLLO, ALEXANDER, Middletown, one of the earliest proprs. of East Haddam, d. 22 July 1709. ROLLOCK, ROBERT, Sandwich, d. prob. Sept. 1669. ROMAN, JOHN, Cambridge, d. 19 Dec. 1638. Of this solitary name not other occurrence is kn. [[vol. 3, p. 572]] RONALLS, JOHN, JOSIAH, and SAMUEL, perhaps br. s at Wickford 1674, may have spelled variously. ROOD, THOMAS, Norwich, had sev. childr. bef. liv. there; Sarah , b. Oct. 1649; Thomas, Mar. 1651; Micah, Feb. 16. 1653; Rachel, Feb. 1655; John, Sept. 1658; Joseph, Mar. 1661; Benjamin, Feb. 1633; Mary, Mar. 1664, d. soon; and Samuel, June 1666. His w. d. happi. Mar. 1668, for his d. Sarah was whip. and he execut. 18 Oct. 1672, as in Trumbull. Col. rec. II. 184, is detail. Perhaps the name was changed to Rudd or Rude. JOHN, with this latter spelling was a petitnr. 1686, for Preston townsh. ROOKER, WILLIAM, Hadley, petitio, against imposts. 1668, took the o. of alleg. 8 Feb. 1679. ROOKMAN, JOHN, came in the Abigail, 1635, aged 45, with w. Elizabeth 31, and s. John, 9; but the name is never found in any of our settlem. ROOME, or ROME, JOHN, Portsmouth 1638, is among freem. 1655, and is nam. in the royal chart. 1663. See Haz. II. 612. He was from Bristol, Eng. prob. for by his will he devis, ho. and ld. in that city to his w. Ann, wh. in 1669 gave her gr.s. William Cory, power to sell it. ROOT, CALEB, Farmington, s. of John the first of the same, m. 9 Aug. 1693, Elizabeth d. of Thomas Salmon of Northampton, had Mary, b. 6 Mar. 1695, bapt. 4 Apr. 1697; Caleb, 14 Mar. 1698; Thomas, 16 Jan. 1702; Elizabeth 8 Apr. 1706; and Samuel, 20 Nov. 1712; and d. 1712. HEZEKIAH, Northampton 1678, s. of Thomas the first, freem. 1690, d. bef. his f. m. 1682, Mehitable, d. of Sampson Frary of Deerfield, had Benjamin, b. 1686; Mehitable, perhaps the sec. d. of the name, 1688; and Mercy 1689, wh. was k. at Deerfield, with her gr.f. Frary, 29 Feb. 1704, by the Fr. and Ind. His wid. m. a 1702, Jermiah Alvord. JACOB, Northampton, br. of the preced. m. a 1680, Mary or Mercy, d. of Sampson Frary, had Joanna, b. 1681; Daniel, 1684; Jacob, 1687; Mercy, 1690; Margaret, 1692; William, 1695; Hezekiah, 1697; Ruth, 1699; Nathaniel, 1702; and Jonathan, 1705; was freem. 1684, but rem., to Hebron, and d. 1731. His will, 1728, names all the ch. exc. Hezekiah, tho. some were d. leav. heirs. of this fam. was the late Hon. Erastus R. of Albany. JOHN, Farmington, m. Mary, d. of Thomas Kilbourne, had John; Thomas, Samuel; Joseph; Caleb; Stephen; Mary, wh. m. Isaac Bronson; and Susanna, M. Oct. 1683, Joseph Langton; was freem. 1657, and d. 1684. leav. good est. and his wid. d. 1697, aged 70. His first three s. sett. at Westfield. In the Hist. of the Kilbourne Fam. pp. 42 and 3, exhibit, the extraord. dilig. of P. K. Kilbourne, some slight differences may be found. JOHN, Farmington, s. of the preced. m. 18 Oct. 1664, Mary, d. of Richard Ashley of Springfield, and sett. at Westfield soon, there had Mary. b. 22 Sept. 1666; Sarah, 24 [[vol. 3, p. 573]] Sept. 1670; John 28 Dec. 1672; Samuel, 16 Sept. 1675; Hannah, 9 Dec. 1677; Abigail, 26 June 1680; Joshua, 23 Nov. 1682; and Mercy, 15 Mar. 1684 or 5; and he d. 1687, hav. been made freem. 1669. All his ch. were liv. in 1710. JOHN, Deerfield, s. of Thomas the first, m. Mehitable, the wid. of Samuel Hinsdale, had Thankful, b. 1677, and was k. by the Ind. 19 Sept. that same yr. JOHN, Fairfield, s. or neph. of Richard, by w. Dorcas had John, Susanna, Mary, and Sarah, all bapt. Apr. 1685 at Woodbury, where prob. some of them were b. for certain. he had rem. thither three or four yrs. bef. beside Josiah, bapt. Mar. 1688; Bethia, Dec. 1691, d. under 9 yrs.; John, again, b. 9 June 1693; Joseph, bapt. June 1698; and Bethia b. 7 Feb. 1703; as Cothren, wh. has confus. in my opin. the stock, as if he were s. of the first John of Farmington, tho. he speaks only of prob. on that point. His w. d. 15 May 1720; and he d. 25 May 1723. JONATHAN, Northampton 1680, s. of Thomas of the same, freem. 1690, m. Ann. d. of William Gull of Hatfield, had Elizabeth b. 1681; Esther, 1683; Hannah, 1687; Ann. 1690; and Hannah, 1695; and he d. 15 Dec. 1741. JOSEPH, Northampton, br. prob. eldest, of the preced. m. Hannah, d. of Edmund Haynes, had Hannah, b. 1662; Joseph, 1665; Thomas, 1667; John, 1669; Sarah, 1672; Hope, a s. 1675; and Hezekiah, 1677; for sec. w. had Mary Burt, wid. of Henry, and d. 19 Apr. 1711. JOSEPH, Farmington, br. of Caleb, m. 1691, Elizabeth Warner, had Elizabeth b. 22, bapt. 26 June 1692; Mary, 22, bapt. 28 Jan. 1694; Joseph, 27 Aug. 1699; and took sec. w. 3 Mar. 1727, Ruth, wid. of Samuel Smith, d. of Thomas Porter; and d. 18 Dec. 1739. JOSHUA, Salem, 1637, when he had gr. of ld. and Felt quotes the rec. of his being drummer. 1657. JOSIAH, Salem, came in the Hercules, 1635, from Kent, aft. join. the ch. 1648, had bapt. Josiah, Bethiah, John, and Susanna, 24 Sept. of that yr. and Thomas, 16 Feb. 1651; was one of the found. of Beverly ch. 1667. Susanna was imprison. in the witchcraft madness; but me may hope that her f. was d. bef. JOSIAH, Boston 1673, mariner, may have been s. of the preced. RALPH, Boston, came in the Abigail, 1635, aged 50. His w. Ann. join. our ch. 1639. But our rec. ment. d. of his w. Mary (prob. sec. w.), 15 Nov. 1655. In 1660, he gave d. Sarah, and her h. James Balston, his ho. orchard, and garden, to secure mainten. of hims. for residue of life; but he had two other ds. to ea. of wh. a few shillings were giv. and he d. Feb. 1666. ROBERT, Newport 1639. SAMUEL, Westfield, s. of John the first, was freem,. 1680, and d. 27 Nov. 1711, leav. wid. Mary, but no ch. STEPHEN, Farmington, br. of Caleb, m. Sarah, d. of John Wadsworth of Farmington, had Timothy, b. a. 1681; [[vol. 3, p. 574]] John, a. 1685; Mary, a. 1691; all bapt. 17 May 1691; Sarah, 17 Dec. 1693; and Hannah, wh. d. un, and perhaps others; and he d. 1717. His wid. d. 20 Mar. 1740. THOMAS, Salem 1637, when he had gr. of ld. that he prob. slighted, as he was of Hartford 1639, or earlier, had large fam. was a waver, and rem. a. 1659, to Northampton, where he was one of the seven pillars for foundat. of the ch. 1661, and d. at gr. age, 17 July 1694, in his will naming progeny, Joseph, Thomas, John (wh. was b. 10 June 1646, and had d. but left d. Thankful), Jonathan, Jacob, Hezekiah (who was d. by left childr.), and Sarah, w. of Samuel Kellogg of Hatfield. THOMAS, Northampton, s. of the preced. m. 1666, Abigail, eldest d. of Alexander Alvord, had Thomas, b. 1667; Abigail, 1669; Samuel, 1673; and Hezekiah. 1676, wh. d. young; and aft. 1700, rem. prob. to Coventry. THOMAS, Westfield, s. of John the first, m. 1670 Mary Gridley, prob. d. of the first Thomas, had Thomas, b. 1 Sept. 1671, d. at 18 yrs.; and Mary 21 Oct. 1673. Soon after his w. d. in that yr. m. 7 Oct. 1675, Mary Spencer, had John, b. 25 Dec. 1676; Samuel, 16 Feb. 1679; Elizabeth 16 Feb. 1681; Sarah, 27 July 1683; Timothy, 3 Dec. 1685; Joseph, 16 June 1688; and his sec. w. d. 4 Nov. 1690. Early in 1693 he m. third w. Sarah, wid. of Josiah Leonard, had Thankful and Mary, tw. 12 Nov. 1693, and this w. d. 3 Jan. foll. and he d. 16 Aug. 1709. Not a few errors are seen in the acco. of his ms. and childr. in Geneal. Reg. VI. 267. THOMAS, Boston, mariner, m. Elizabeth d. of Ambrose Gale of Marblehead, had Mary; and in his will 18 Sept. 1683, pro. 31 Jan. foll. in wh. he says he is bd. on voyage to Jamaica, names only that w. ch. and f.-in-law. This name oft. is spell. Rootes. ROOTEN, or ROWTON, RICHARD, Lynn, emb. at London, in the Susan and Ellen, Apr. 1635, aged 36, with w. Ann of the same age, and ch. Edmund, 6 mos. No more is kn. of any of the fam. but that one rec. tells that he d. 20 Sept. 1663, ano. that the will of 12 June preced. pro. in Nov. names no ch. but does the w. and kinsman, Edmund, wh. d. 8 Apr. 1675. He had modera. est. ROPER, BENJAMIN, a soldier in Philip's war, whose resid. perhaps was Dedham, k. by the Ind. 18 Sept. 1675, with the flower of Essex, under Capt. Lothrop. He may have been s. or gr.s. of Walter; though in Farmer he is made tw. br. of Ephraim. EPHRAIM, s. of John of Dedham, serv. as a soldier under Capt. Turner in Philip's war, was in the Falls fight. His first w. was k. by the Ind. and he m. 20 Nov. 1677, Hannah, prob. the wid. of Stephen Goble, had Ruth, b. 7 Mar. 1681; and Elizabeth 17 Mar. 1683. He with w. and one d. was k. by the Ind. 1697. JOHN, Dedham 1639, when his w. and d. Mary, join, with the ch. was freem. 2 June 1641. JOHN, Dedham, possib. s. of the preced. [[vol. 3, p. 575]] came, 1637, aged 26, with w. Alice, 23, and two ch. Alice and Elizabeth a carpenter from New Buckenham, Co. Norfk. as says that the rec. [See 4 Mass. Hist. Coll. I. 99.] At D. by w. Alice he had Rachel, b. 16 Mar. 1640, d. next yr.; Hannah, 5 Bapt. 9 Apr. 1642; Ephraim, and Benjamin, b. 23 Feb. tho. the rec. of bapt. has Ephraim and Nathaniel tw. 2 Mar. 1645; and I would gladly tell more if kn to me. An Alice R. bec. perhaps third w. of John Dickinson of Salisbury. JOHN, Charlestown, 1647-58, may be he wh. rem. to Lancaster, and was k. by the Ind. early in 1676, on the same day when all the other inhab. gave up their residences to conflagr. WALTER, Hampton, 1639, had Mary, bapt. 22 Aug. 1641, freem. 18 May 1642, rem. to Ipswich bef. 1666, was aft. of Andover, but d. in Ipsw. 15 July 1680, in 68th yr. His will names w. Susan, ch. John, Nathaniel, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah; beside gr.ch. Elizabeth Margaret, Susan, Rose, Sarah Sparks, and John Dutch, s.of Mary, w. of Robert. John, his s. d. 27 Nov. 1709, in 60th yr. ROPES, GEORGE, Salem 1637, by w. Mary had George, wh. may have been among the youngest, and unm. when k. by the Ind. 18 Sept. 1675, at Bloody Brook, in the flower of Essex under Lothrop; Jonathan, bapt. 5 June 1642, d. at 19 yrs; Sarah, 3 Nov. 1643, d. soon, perhaps, for the ch. rec. makes Mary, bapt. 3 Nov. 1644; John 4 July 1647; William, 28 Dec. 1651; Abigail, 29 Oct. 1654; and Samuel, 15 Mar. 1657; was constable 1665, and d. June 1670, leav. no will. His wid. wh. had admin. d. 1691. The d. Mary m. 17 Nov. 1663 John Norman. JAMES, Boston, by w. Sarah had Sarah, b. 22 Nov. 1680 and James, 30 Jan. 1688. JOHN, Salem, s. of George, m. 25 Mar. 1699. Lydia Wells, ahd Benjamin, b. 22 Mar. 1670; Lydia, 16 Dec. 1672; Mary, 21 Aug. 1675; John, 3 Sept. 1678; Abigail, 20 Apr. 1681; Sarah, 23 Feb. 1685; Samuel, 24 Jan. 1687; Elizabeth Nov. 1689; and Nathaniel 1692, wh. was f. of Nathaniel, H. III. 96, is whol. giv. to R. Ross, wh. would be an easy mistake for Ropes in old chirogr. but I hardly dare to suppose such an error in a Salem man. ROSE, DANIEL, Wethersfield, s. of Robert, freem. 1665, m. 1664, Elizabeth eldest d. of the first John Goodrich, had Elizabeth b. 15 Apr. 1665; Daniel, 20 Aug. 1667; Mary, 11 Feb. 1669; Hannah, 12 Aug. 1673; Jonathan, 20 Sept. 1679; Sarah, 2 Nov. 1681; Abigail, 14 Sept. 1683; Dorothy, 3 May 1687; and Lydia, 2 Apr. 1689; was call. 66 yrs. old in 1696, and so maybe presum. to have been b. in Eng. and brot. by his f. GEORGE, Braintree, one of the founders of the ch. there, 17 Sept 1639, rem. to Concord, freem. 13 May 1640, d. 20 May 1649. GEORGE, New Haven, by w. Constance had John, bapt. May 1662; and Daniel, Nov. 1663; both in her right, but the days of both are giv. wrong in Geneal. Reg. IX. 362, neither being Sunday. GIDEON, Scituate, s. of Thomas of the same, had Jabez and Jermiah, HENRY, came in the James from Southampton 1635; but no more is kn. of him. JEREMIAH, Scituate, s. of the first Thomas, mn. 1698, Eliz, d. of Anthony Collamore, had only Thomas, and d. 1699. His wid. m. Timothy Symmes. JOHN, Watertown 1636, rem. to Branford, was of the jury, perhaps, in 1649, and was liv. there 1667. He had m. the wid. of William Luddington in 1663, and d. in the spring of 1683, and Porter advises me, that the name should be Ross; and he adds to the issue, Elizabeth b. 21 Dec. 1665; and Hannah, 24 Aug. 1668; but his ch. by former w. were Martha, wh. m. William Luddington; John; Mary, wh. m. a Bates; and Hannah, w. prob. of Edward Frisbie. In his will, of 18 Apr. 1683, these are all ment. as is gr.d. Elizabeth Rose. He may have been s. of Robert, and f. of that John, wh. the Cambridge rec. says d. 12 Dec. 1640. JOHN, Scituate, s. of Thomas, k. by the Ind. 15 Mary. 1676, in Rehoboth fight, under Capt. Pierce. John, 15; Robert, 15; Elizabeth 13; Mary, 11; Samuel, 9; Sarah, 7; Daniel, 3; and Dorcas, 2; was constable 1640, rep. 1641, 2 and 3; rem. bef. 1648 to Stratford, where the list of freem. 1669 bears his name, unless it be of his s. ROBERT, wh. is more prob. for one R. (James, as Mr. Whitmore, in Geneal, Reg. XII. 301, says), d. at Branford, leav. good est. in 1664 or 5; and I judge the younger was among early sett. at Easthampton, L. I. 1650. His will of 25 Aug. 1664, and inv. of good est. 2 June foll. His w. Rebecca, ch. Jonathan, Hannah, John, Mary, Elizabeth and five others. Mary, d. of the younger Robert, m. a 1676, Moses Johnson of Stratford; and Hannah m. Isaac Stiles jr. ROGER, Boston, 1663, a mariner, and serv. of William Hudson, m. at Watertown a,. 1661, Abigail, d. of Christopher Grant, and prob. at W. spent most of his days, liv. there 1693. THOMAS, Scituate, bef. 1660, had John, Gideon, both bef. ment. Thomas, and perhaps others; m. sec. w 1666, Alice, wid. of Jonas Pickels, d. of Elder William Hatch, and had Jeremiah. THOMAS, New London, m. bef. 1683, Hannah, d. of Robert Allyn, was one of the grantees of Preston, 1686. THOMAS, Marblehead 1673, may be the same as the preced, or quite as likely of Billerica 1679, unless this be wrongly writ. for Ross. THOMAS, Scituate, s. of Thomas the first, had Gideon, b. 1702; and prob. others. At Block isl. in 1678, some Rose, with a wild spell. termed Rose, in ano. place, Tormot Roosse, was a townsman, as in the diligent extr. of Geneal. Reg. XIII. 37. In the Index his name bee. GEORGE, New Haven, m. 1658, Constance Little, perhaps d. of Richard, was freem. 1668. Sometimes his name is Roose, sometimes Rawse. JAMES, Sudbury, by w. Mary had Mary, b. 25 Dec. 1656. He, or the succeed, may have been that soldier, whose w. Mary, in the spring, of 1676, says her h. went to Narraganset, under Capt. Mosely, of course in Dec. bef. was near 70 yrs. old, was still in the serv. and his fam. suffer. so that she beg. for his release. Sudbury James had d. Dorothy, wh. m. 11 Apr. 1687, Eliezer Whitney from Watertown. JAMES, Falmouth 1657, m. Ann, eldest d. of George Lewis, had James, b. 1662; and other ch. all taken by the Ind. 11 Aug. 1676. After 1678, with his fam. he went back to Falmouth, liv. at Back Cove; but at the sec. destruct. of the town in 1690, again was taken and carr. to Canada, whence in Oct. 1695, one of the name, prob. the s. was ransom, and aft. liv. says Wilis, at Salem.
