What was it like when you were in a situation where you suddenly had no source of light?

  • hard to see

  • total darkness … could not see hand in front of face

  • you might have wondered about your eyesight

  • you wander around, bumping into things

  • scary

  • even feel a loss of equilibrium

Today we look at one of the “I Am” claims by Jesus

  • Jesus is the Light who reveals the way we should go


3. Bible Study
3.1 Jesus – The Light of the World
Listen for how to receive light.
John 8:12 (NIV) When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
Who did Jesus say that He was?

  • the light of the world

  • the giver of light

  • the giver of life

What did Jesus say would be the result of following Him?



  • never walk in darkness

  • have the light of life

In what setting might Jesus have been speaking that led Him to use light as his second “I am” statement?



  • at sunrise or sunset

  • in the dark of night

  • gathered around a campfire

  • gathered around a single light source in a dark room

Why is light a fitting metaphor for Jesus?



  • He brings a message which does away with the darkness of sin

  • He is the one who reveals our need for salvation

  • His preachings opened people’s lives to Truth

To what does light stand in contrast?



  • darkness … in terms of physics, the lack of electromagnetic rays of the visible spectrum

  • spiritual darkness, the lack of Truth, reality which has to do with our relationship to God

Where do you see evidence of darkness in today’s world?



  • entertainment world

  • relationships

  • drug culture

  • rise of homosexual influence

In what way is Jesus a "light"?



  • brings Truth to these elements of darkness in our world

  • shows the contrast between the darkness in our world and God’s plan

  • shows God’s solution for these examples of darkness

How is Jesus the light in your world?



  • reading what God says in Scripture

  • lighting the pathway of our lives

  • giving direction in decisions

  • brings Truth to bear in different situations we face

How are people in a state of darkness before they believe in Jesus?



  • living without Jesus … without God’s influence in their lives

  • not aware of their own problems

  • not aware of how to escape their problems

  • struggling with no understanding of the way out

  • not even sure what the problem is

What does it look like never to walk in darkness (spiritual darkness)?



  • assurance of freedom from sin (the penalty and the power of sin)

  • able to see the way through spiritual problems

  • able to bring God’s wisdom and Truth to bear on all aspects of life

How would we, on a daily basis, walk in the “light of life?”



  • regular communication with Jesus

  • reading and applying God's Word to our lives

  • seeking God's direction

  • submissive to God's Holy Spirit

  • allowing Him to direct our choices, our actions

3.2 Jesus – True and Trustworthy


Listen for a legal argument.
John 8:13-15 (NIV) The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.
How did the Pharisees challenge Jesus?

  • your claims are your own

  • you have no other person or witness to back you up

  • anyone can make claims like this

  • you need additional proof

Why did Jesus say His own testimony was valid?



  • I know about myself

  • you don’t know me … I know me

  • I know my origin, you don’t

  • I know my destination, my purpose, my destiny for being here .. you don’t

Why could the Pharisees not understand who Jesus was and the validity of His statements?



  • they had only a human perspective

  • they lacked spiritual insight

  • they were good at evaluating human behavior, but lacked insight into God’s ways and purposes

What are some reasons people give today for rejecting God’s Word as truth?



  • it’s all a myth

  • Jesus was only a good teacher, he could not have been God

  • it’s all written by men, they are not infallible

  • religion is only a crutch for the weak

  • at a deeper level, they don’t want to become subject to God’s standards of living

  • don’t want to give up sinful actions and attitudes

  • they choose not to open their spiritual eyes to the Light of the Gospel message

Why is Jesus’ testimony credible to you?



  • He rose from the dead

  • His teachings cut through the baloney and go right through to reality

  • He showed how much He loved us

  • He gave up His life so we could have life

3.3 Jesus – Makes Known God the Father


Listen for comments on Jesus’ Father.
John 8:16-19 (NIV) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also."
Why did Jesus say His decisions were right?

  • He was not alone in His actions and decisions

  • He acted together with His Heavenly Father

  • God the Father sent Him … they acted as one

What two witnesses did Jesus claim testified on His behalf?



  • the Law required two witnesses in a legal case

  • Jesus claimed two witnesses

  • He was one, God the Father was the other

  • we must read God’s Word and apply them to our lives

  • accept and live by the Truth of what God has said to us
