What was it like when you were in a situation where you suddenly had no source of light?
hard to see
total darkness … could not see hand in front of face
you might have wondered about your eyesight
you wander around, bumping into things
even feel a loss of equilibrium
Today we look at one of the “I Am” claims by Jesus
Jesus is the Light who reveals the way we should go
3. Bible Study
3.1 Jesus – The Light of the World
Listen for how to receive light.
John 8:12 (NIV) When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
Who did Jesus say that He was?
the light of the world
the giver of light
the giver of life
What did Jesus say would be the result of following Him?
never walk in darkness
have the light of life
In what setting might Jesus have been speaking that led Him to use light as his second “I am” statement?
at sunrise or sunset
in the dark of night
gathered around a campfire
gathered around a single light source in a dark room
Why is light a fitting metaphor for Jesus?
He brings a message which does away with the darkness of sin
He is the one who reveals our need for salvation
His preachings opened people’s lives to Truth
what He said, what He did brought spiritual light to lives
To what does light stand in contrast?
darkness … in terms of physics, the lack of electromagnetic rays of the visible spectrum
spiritual darkness, the lack of Truth, reality which has to do with our relationship to God
Where do you see evidence of darkness in today’s world?
rise of homosexual influence
In what way is Jesus a "light"?
brings Truth to these elements of darkness in our world
shows the contrast between the darkness in our world and God’s plan
shows God’s solution for these examples of darkness
How is Jesus the light in your world?
reading what God says in Scripture
lighting the pathway of our lives
giving direction in decisions
brings Truth to bear in different situations we face
How are people in a state of darkness before they believe in Jesus?
living without Jesus … without God’s influence in their lives
not aware of their own problems
not aware of how to escape their problems
struggling with no understanding of the way out
not even sure what the problem is
What does it look like never to walk in darkness (spiritual darkness)?
assurance of freedom from sin (the penalty and the power of sin)
able to see the way through spiritual problems
able to bring God’s wisdom and Truth to bear on all aspects of life
How would we, on a daily basis, walk in the “light of life?”
regular communication with Jesus
reading and applying God's Word to our lives
seeking God's direction
submissive to God's Holy Spirit
allowing Him to direct our choices, our actions
3.2 Jesus – True and Trustworthy
Listen for a legal argument.
John 8:13-15 (NIV) The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.
How did the Pharisees challenge Jesus?
your claims are your own
you have no other person or witness to back you up
anyone can make claims like this
you need additional proof
Why did Jesus say His own testimony was valid?
I know about myself
you don’t know me … I know me
I know my origin, you don’t
I know my destination, my purpose, my destiny for being here .. you don’t
Why could the Pharisees not understand who Jesus was and the validity of His statements?
they had only a human perspective
they lacked spiritual insight
they were good at evaluating human behavior, but lacked insight into God’s ways and purposes
What are some reasons people give today for rejecting God’s Word as truth?
it’s all a myth
Jesus was only a good teacher, he could not have been God
it’s all written by men, they are not infallible
religion is only a crutch for the weak
at a deeper level, they don’t want to become subject to God’s standards of living
don’t want to give up sinful actions and attitudes
they choose not to open their spiritual eyes to the Light of the Gospel message
Why is Jesus’ testimony credible to you?
He rose from the dead
His teachings cut through the baloney and go right through to reality
He showed how much He loved us
He gave up His life so we could have life
3.3 Jesus – Makes Known God the Father
Listen for comments on Jesus’ Father.
John 8:16-19 (NIV) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also."
Why did Jesus say His decisions were right?
He was not alone in His actions and decisions
He acted together with His Heavenly Father
God the Father sent Him … they acted as one
What two witnesses did Jesus claim testified on His behalf?
the Law required two witnesses in a legal case
Jesus claimed two witnesses
He was one, God the Father was the other
To what did Jesus appeal in these verses to prove He is the Light of the World?
the requirement of two witnesses
Jesus is the first witness
God the Father is the other
Why did Jesus say to His opponents that in spite of what they claimed, they truly did not know the Father?
God the Son and God the Father are One in the same
“to know Me is to know the Father”
if they understood the messages of the prophets, they would see Jesus was Who He claimed to be
they were too tied up in their splitting of hairs in the human rules based on the Old Testament laws
What decisions must we make in order to follow Jesus’ judgments and directions?
we must accept what the Pharisees could not
Jesus is who He claims to be … the Son of God
we accept both Jesus’ provision of salvation and His Lordship in our lives
we must read God’s Word and apply them to our lives
accept and live by the Truth of what God has said to us
Use the last page as a handout so your learners can take home the application points of this week’s lesson.
ubmission to God’s working in our lives
How does Jesus continue to be your light?
God’s words in scripture – read them, think about them
sensitivity to God’s Spirit speaking to our hearts and minds
always open to new Truth God reveals to us in Bible study and preaching and teaching
the more light you apply to your lives, the more light you receive
Consider a challenge you face that has frozen you in your tracks.
You are afraid whatever decision you make might be wrong
Ask the Lord to show you light to take the step you need to take
Maybe you know someone facing a difficult decision
This week offer to meet with him or her to discuss the issues and pray together about the decision
With a concordance and study Bible, research how John uses the concept of light in his Gospel
Take notes on what you find, meditate on the concepts
