1. Motivate
If you could change one thing about your city, what would you change?

  • would be nice to have sidewalks in residential areas

  • longer green lights at intersections

  • sequenced traffic lights on major streets

  • need another Wal-Mart?

  • clean up certain sections of town

  • more realistic speed limits on some streets

  • more parks

2. Transition
Today we will look at a city that is beyond our imagination … you won’t want to change anything about it!
 We want to be motivated to live now in preparation for the life we will live there someday.

3.1 New Heaven and New Earth
Listen for things about the new heaven and new earth that are different from what we have now.
Rev. 21:1-7 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. [2] I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. [3] And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. [4] He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." [5] He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." [6] He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. [7] He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
What things are listed as and new earth?

In Heaven

Missing from Heaven

  • dwelling of God with men

  • He lives with them

  • everything new

  • drink without cost from the spring of the water of life

  • no longer any sea

  • tears wiped away

  • nor death

  • no mourning,

  • no crying,

  • no pain

  • old order of things passed away

What promises in these verses do you most look forward to seeing fulfilled? Why?

  • no pain … it is so debilitating

  • no death … it is scary to contemplate, you miss those who have died

  • live in God’s literal presence (not just spiritual) … from this perspective the reality of it seems better than having to trust

  • everything new … we live with much that is old, refurbished, patched together, always wearing out

  • “drink” from the spring of the water of life … it will assuage all of our thirsts and needs

What tears, grief, crying and pain do you look forward to leaving?

  • grief of lost loved ones

  • the pain of family members who make bad choices

  • physical struggles

  • worry about kids, grandkids

  • frustration of dealing with toddlers, teens, in-laws (and outlaws!)

What do you think it will be like living with the continual and direct presence of God?

  • will mean no presence of sin

  • we will be totally in awe of Him

  • we need not fear or worry about the things which trouble us now

  • He will be there in a literal sense and take care of all those things

  • we will no longer be troubled with temptation

  • we get to praise Him directly … whether we like traditional or contemporary praise and worship will not matter any longer

Think of one of your favorite vacations (to a theme park, a cruise, a resort, the wilderness). As much as you enjoyed these, how is heaven going to be better than any of them?

  • it will never end

  • it is paid for (by the blood of Christ)

  • no mosquitoes

  • no waiting in lines

  • no sea-sickness

  • no noisy people in the cabin next door

  • no danger from the elements

  • you won’t get tired of them

3.2 Glory of God

Listen for more things not needed in heaven and why they are not needed.
Rev. 21:22-27 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. [23] The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. [24] The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. [25] On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. [26] The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. [27] Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.
According to this passage, why is a temple not needed in heaven?

  • God, Himself is right there … His presence is literal

  • His presence is felt throughout heaven

  • His presence is not in a limited space and location

Why are the sun and moon no longer needed?

  • God’s glory provides the light

  • Jesus (the Lamb) is the “lamp”

  • Glory is God’s “visible” revelation of himself

  • we may have new senses that “receive” that glorious revelation

  • our ability to “see” may not depend on electromagnetic radiation (light)

  • or God’s glorious presence generates that kind of radiation everywhere

  • the key is that it is God’s glorious presence

What are some ways you can be aware of God’s glory today, right hear on earth?

  • consciously look for God’s hand at work around you

  • the beauty of flowers and foliage

  • the artistry of sunsets, sunrises

  • a new born baby with all the parts working

  • a growing child, acquiring language, physical capabilities

  • the change God accomplishes in a new Christian

How might cultivating this awareness help you face continuous struggles here and now?

  • God is able to do those things in nature

  • He is just as able to step into our life situations and accomplish miracles

  • His creativity and power are not limited to flowers and sunsets

  • If He cares that much about nature (a flower which lasts a few days), certainly He cares for us (we are made in His image)

  • if you are consciously looking for this glory in nature, then you will begin to notice them in the events of your life

Note the mention of the kings and nations (peoples of the earth) bringing glory, splendor, and tribute into the open gates of heaven. How could you offer up your own glory to God today … this coming week?

  • singing songs of worship to the Lord

  • praising His name to others

  • witnessing of what He has done in your life to people who don’t know Him

  • giving of resources so that the Gospel message can be known throughout the world

  • studying what God wants you to know in His Word and applying it, living by it’s instruction

  • talking to God as a friend … declaring to Him your trust to handle those issues that concern you

3.3 Presence of God

Listen for aspects of nature that John saw in the new Jerusalem.
Rev. 22:1-5 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb [2] down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. [3] No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. [4] They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. [5] There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.
What elements of nature did John record in this passage?

  • r
Note the abundant supply from God of all of our needs
    iver of water of life

  • a street

  • tree of life

  • a different crop of fruit each month (still passage of time?)

  • leaves of the tree

  • healing of the nations

Which of these things and other elements of the passage are beyond our comprehension?

  • the river of life clear as crystal

  • a tree with 12 different fruits

  • seeing God’s face

  • His name on our foreheads

  • God’s glory providing the light

Consider Genesis 3:22 And the Lord God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." Compare this tree of life to what we just read about in our passage.

  • same name

  • Adam and Eve were not allowed to eat of the tree and live forever

  • in New Jerusalem it is implied we will partake of it, receive healing from its leaves

  • we now will be reign (live) forever

Note verse 3 where it says we will serve God … Consider the kinds of things this might include …

  • praise and worship

  • perfect worship … no contention over worship styles

  • will we also be creative?

  • may mean full and active lives … all that we do will be an act of worship

  • we will reign with Him … will we be given responsibilities within the new heavens and new earth?
