DIRECTIONS: The following is a compilation of 4 things that happened around the time of WWI. These events greatly influenced America during the years after the war. Read the summary of each of the 4 scenarios and hypothesize how it will affect Americans.
1) CAUSE Uniting the Homefront during WWI:

  • America has a large number of immigrants (especially German) with ties to their home countries

  • US goes to war against Germany & Austria-Hungary

  • US government (CPI) puts out propaganda that depicts Germans as uncivilized monsters

  • Many Americans rename things that sound German (Sauerkraut, Hamburger, etc)

2) League of Nations:

  • Treaty of Versailles is rejected by US Congress because they opposed US involvement in The League of Nations

  • Joining the league would require America to play a larger role in the foreign affairs and deal the with the problems of other nations

  • Americans do not want to get involved in foreign military entanglements

3) Bolshevik Revolution:

  • Lenin and Bolshevik “Reds” win a Russian civil war over US supported “whites”

  • Lenin institutes communist government (essentially the polar opposite of the American “free market capitalist system”)

    • Government owns all land and property and is controlled by one political party

    • Individuals had no rights that the government was required to respect

    • Government vowed to stir up revolutions to spread communism

  • Lenin and his communist system are openly hostile towards American beliefs and values

How will Americans feel about the changing nature of the Russian government? What realistic actions might they want to take? Draw conclusions and generalizations as to what might happen.

4) The Great Migration:

- White American Males leave factory jobs in order to enlist for the war

- African Americans leave the South in an attempt to fill recently vacated northern factory jobs

- African American Population in Northern cities booms

- Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, New York, Baltimore, Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh and more see enormous growth
How will African Americans be affected once the war is over and the white American soldiers return? Draw conclusions and generalizations as to what might happen.
