WHO IS MARCUS GARVEY?


  • Marcus Garvey believed in self-reliance and Nationhood. He taught that Blacks would be respected only when they were economically strong. He advocated an “Independent Black Economy.”

  • 1914 - Founder and President of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and African Committees League (ACL)

  • 1914 - He formed the “Negro Factories Corporation” He built and operated factories in the big industrial centers of the United States, Central America, West Indies and Africa to manufacture every marketable commodity.

  • 1918 - He produced a Newspaper called “ The Negro World”

  • 1919 - He Initiated a “Back to Africa” Movement

  • 1919 - Mr. Garvey owned and operated the “Black Star Line Steam Ship Corporation.” The “Black Star Line” and its successor company the “Black Cross Navigation and Trading Company,” operated four ship companies that carried passengers and cargo between the U.S and Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and Costa Rico.
