Ashes! Ashes! We all Fall Down

Lent is a difficult time in the church year for me. The call to die to self is not what my flesh wants to hear. The incessant reminder of the wretchedness of my sin is something I would like to shrug off. “Yeah, but if only God knew what my neighbor was doing He wouldn’t think much of my ‘little sins.’”

Sin has become passé in today’s world. The word has been replaced by other synonyms like “mistake or flaws” words that don’t quite emphasize the utter depravity of what sin is!
Even though I do not want to hear about this, it is a great thing that we are called to repentance during Lent. It is good that there is another season of Lent for us to hear about the wretchedness of our sins. I say this not with a false sense of humility, nor am I trying to be uber pious. Lent is a time for the Holy Spirit to work repentance in our lives. And as the Holy Spirit brings us to nothing He fills us with grace of our Lord Jesus Christ!
This Lenten season my preaching theme will be “The Wretchedness of Sin and God’s Amazing Grace.” Below are the sermon texts:
-Ash Wednesday: “David and Bathsheba’s Sin and God’s Forgiveness” 2 Samuel 11, 12
-February 25: “Love and Discipline: Amnon’s sin” 2 Samuel 13:1-22
-March 4: “God’s Faithfulness Overcomes Our Unfaithfulness” Hosea chapters 1-3

If you would like to “ask the Pastor” a question you can write it down on piece of paper and hand it to me or email me at (lohs0016@umn.edu). Your name will not be printed with your question.
Pastor, how do I know which person God wants me to marry?”
This question is similar to another question that I often hear “how do I know which job God wants me to have.” Whenever you are seeking the will of God it is crucial to begin with what God has already revealed to us in His Word. What does God say about marriage? He says it is between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5) and that it is meant for life. We are also told in the Bible that we are not to be unequally yoked, meaning a Christian is not to marry an unbeliever (2 Corinthians 6:14). If you are a Christian pursuing marriage you must start here with what God says about this holy estate.
When it comes to getting married, selecting a career or changing a career, pray to God and entrust the matter into His hands. At the same also use the gifts he has given you to use. Use your brain and think about your decision. Also seek input from your family, your church, and other Christians. Ask a lot of question and also accept the answers even if they are hard to swallow. Here is a brief checklist to help one in answering the question “should I marry this person?”

-Is the person a Christian? Are they active in the faith (worship attendance, prayer, Bible reading, etc..)

-What is their personality like? How is their attitude in life? A person’s attitude and behavior does not “magically” change after marriage.

-Are their traits that annoy me? Can I live with them the rest of my life?

-Children: when to have them and how many? If you want kids and your future spouse does not, do not go into marriage thinking they will change their mind.

-What are their goals? Are they similar to yours?

-What’s your future spouse’s family like? You will be spending time with them!

“A time to laugh” Ecclesiastes 3:4

Who is the man behind Valentine’s Day?

  • Valentine was a faithful Christian priest in the 3rd century. He was imprisoned for marrying young Christian couples. At the time, Emperor Claudius declared it illegal for young men to get married. He reasoned that unmarried men fought better in battle since they did not have to worry about their wife and children. In 269 AD he was sentenced to death for his stand for Christian marriage. Tradition holds that on the day of his execution he left a note of encouragement for a child of his jailer on an irregularly shaped piece of paper. This is a true Valentine’s greeting and expression of love!
