Vietnam War Unit

US History 2013

Overview: Now that the OGT’s are over, we are going to begin a class project on the Vietnam War. We will have several topics/groups on the Vietnam War. Each group will be responsible for presenting their topic to the class. Objectives are listed for each area, and each group is expected to achieve them at the highest level. Links to helpful websites are included for each group, but you are encouraged to find other sources on your own.
Schedule: I will start with an introduction to the Vietnam War. Then, we will look at the topics and divide into groups. We will work on our projects in class from March 18-22 (THEN A WEEK OF SPRING BREAK) and from April 1 to April 5. Final preparation will take place on Monday, April 8th. Presentations will begin on Tuesday, April 9.
Grades: The final project will be worth 50 points. Also, checks for progression will take place every other day. These checks will be worth 10 points each. There will be 5 total checks x 10 points = 50 points. Grand total will be 100 points. You will be graded on how well you accomplish your objectives, creativity, and accuracy.

Honors: Honors students will be reading the book “The Things They Carried.” The book will be divided up into 9 sections. Each section will have multiple choice and short answer questions to complete. There will also be 6 discussion questions that you will have to complete on Edmodo.

Section 2 (Ch 4/5): Friday, March 22 Section 6 (Ch 13/14): Monday, April 8

Section 3 (Ch 6/7): Monday, April 1 Section 7 (Ch 15-17): Wednesday, April 10

Section 4 (Ch 8/9): Wednesday, April 3 Section 8 (Ch 18-20): Friday, April 12

Section 9 (Ch 21/22): Monday, April 15


*Edmodo discussion should take place while you read, but some can not be done until you are finished with the book. All Edmodo discussions should be completed by Friday, April 19. Your discussion group for Edmodo is “2013 The Things They Carried.” Your group code is mi74kt
Grades:

  1. 10 points for multiple choice/short answer questions for each section. Email to me or turn in on paper. (90 total points)

  2. 10 points for discussion on Edmodo. You must have an original post and 1 comment on another’s post. (60 total points)

Grand total = 150 points

Group 2: Vietnam War Timeline


Objectives:

  1. Create a Vietnam War Timeline with explanation of major events and visuals. Find a spot in the hallway where you can post your timeline. ***YOU WILL HAVE TO DO SOME RESEARCH FIRST, SO YOU KNOW WHICH EVENTS ARE BIG ENOUGH TO INCLUDE ON YOUR TIMELINE!

  2. Present your timeline to the class—describe each of the events included on your time line.

Group 3: Map/Important Battles


Objectives:

  1. Create a map of Indochina. Include names of the countries, bodies of water, rivers, mountains, etc.

  2. On your map, indicate where major battles took place. Then give a description of each battle. ***TRY MAKING A THINKLINK FOR THIS OBJECTIVE!

  3. Present your map to the class. Indicate where the different countries, bodies of water, rivers, mountains are located. Then, indicate where the major battles took place and explain them to the class.

Group 4: Weapons/Style of warfare


Objectives:

  1. Create a wall of weapons/style of warfare during the Vietnam War. Be sure to include visuals. Separate by country. Include aircraft, ground artillery, guns, chemicals, etc.

  2. Present your information to the class. Be able to describe the weapon, which country used it, and the lasting effect of items such as napalm and agent orange.

    2. Maps of both Vietnam and Korea—show where they are located

    3. Purpose of war

    4. Military leaders/Political leaders from each of the countries

    5. Types of weapons/method of warfare

    6. Deaths/casualties

    7. Cost $$$$$

    8. Results—Did Communism spread???

Group 6: Home Front/Protests


Objectives:

Objectives:

  1. Prepare a presentation on the lasting effects of the Vietnam War. Explain the long term effects on both the United States and Vietnam. Be sure to explain how the war affected Vietnam War veterans.

  2. Show the class the Vietnam War Memorial Website. Navigate around the site and explain key information.
