Monthly Bulletin /Circular AUGUST, 2015/No. 035

TO ALL PRIESTS AND RELIGIOUS WORKING IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF LAGOS, AND THE LAY FAITHFUL

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

  1. THE MONTH OF AUGUST: You are all welcome to the eight month of the year, the Month of August. Gradually, the year is drawing to a close. We therefore must think about how we have fared with our spiritual lives and how much we have been faithful to the tasks entrusted to us by Our Lord Jesus Christ. May the Holy Spirit enlighten us and imbue us with the grace to persevere in doing good.

In this month of August, the Church has provided the faithful with feasts which assist us to celebrate major events in the life of Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and some remarkable saints. Two of these feasts are worthy of particular mention i.e. the feast of the Transfiguration (6th) which gives the faithful a foretaste of the glory of God to be revealed; the second is the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (15th), which assures us that God fulfils his promises and does not refuse any good to those who walk in his presence without blame.

In the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Saints we celebrate this month, we find an assurance of heavenly glory for Christians who persevere to the end. Following Mary and the saints whose feasts we commemorate this month: John Mary Vianney, Augustine, Lawrence, Clare, Maximilian Kolbe, Monica etc, let us embrace and practice the virtue of perseverance as we continue our journey in this second half of the year.

  1. INSTALLATION ANNIVERSARY: With a grateful heart, I thank the Almighty God for his love and providence as I mark my third anniversary as the Archbishop of Lagos. I sincerely thank the Archbishop Emeritus, Clergy, Religious and Lay faithful of the Archdiocese for the collaboration and understanding with which we have worked in this past three years. Be assured of my prayers and spiritual solicitude.

I shall on the 4th of August, 2015 celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos by 12 noon. I ask you to kindly join me in thanksgiving and praise, if convenient. May God bless you all and may St. John Vianney whose memorial falls on that day intercede for us all.

  1. PATRONESS OF THE ARCHDIOCESE: This is to bring to the notice of the entire Archdiocese that by a Decree promulgated by my illustrious predecessor, Anthony Cardinal Okogie in 2004, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church (Mater Ecclesiae) was pronounced as the Patroness of the Archdiocese of Lagos. This means that the Saturday before every Pentecost Sunday, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of the Church, is the feast of the Patroness of the Archdiocese. Below is an extract from the 2004 Decree

  • That the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church (Mater Ecclesiae) is solemnly declared the Patroness of the Archdiocese of Lagos. The Saturday before the vigil of Pentecost is to be observed as a solemnity of Mary, Mother of the Church (Mater Ecclesiae) in our Archdiocese.

  • That all those who on the day of this Solemnity visit the monastery, recite the prayer to the Mother of the Church and pray in accordance with the conditions stipulated by the Church (recite once the Creed, the “Our Father”, the “Hail Mary”, the “Glory Be”, the ejaculation “Mary, Most Holy Mother of the Church, save your Children” and making a sacramental confession within one week of the Solemnity) will receive a partial indulgence.

NB: The Patron of the Archdiocese remains The Holy Cross while the Patroness of the Archdiocese is the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church (Mater Ecclesiae).

  1. HARVEST 2015: The harvest season is here again. While we work and pray for a good harvest, we must ensure that provision is made for adequate security of lives and properties in our Churches. We implore all Priests to maintain proper liturgical decorum during the “Harvest Masses” and Bazaar bearing in mind that the house of God is first and foremost the house of prayer. Please note that on no account should the Sanctuary be profaned with Harvest Banner; for the sanctuary is a sacred place of worship. The Blessed Sacrament, our focal point of worship, takes prominence.

Our attention has been drawn also to Parish Priests who invite priests from different places during this season without proper instruction and guidance on Archdiocesan liturgical regulations. Of particular emphasis is the Selling of Apples, Boiled Eggs, Football Club Jerseys; Sowing of seeds, Handkerchief Sundays, etc. These extraneous and non-Catholic practices must stop.

  1. LEAVE/HOLIDAYS: We are in the period when most priests go on holidays. Please be reminded of the regulations concerning approved leave allowances, purchase of flight tickets or any other form of transportation and the duration of annual leave. Any desired departure from the regulations must be with the approval of the Archbishop.
