DURING CONNECTIONS ROOM TIME

Time Needed:

40 minutes

Handouts/Materials Provided:

  • List of prompts and instructions for the Advisor.

Summary of Activity for the Advisor:
This is a silent exercise: no laughing, no talking, etc. Preview the basic instructions of the exercise:

  1. You will read a prompt and if they identify with the statement, they will cross to the other side of the room.

  2. Next, you will ask them to make eye contact with someone they crossed over with, or someone they stayed behind with.

  3. Then ask them to make eye contact with someone on the opposite side of them room.

  4. Finally, ask them to cross back.

Notes:

  • If the students do not understand the prompt, give a brief description.

  • Let each participant know that they don’t have to cross if they don’t want to. They can always “pass.”

  • Encourage them to cross the line based on however they interpret the statement; they will have a chance to explain later if they want to.

  • Encourage them not to judge others based on when they cross or don’t cross. This is an exercise about noticing and respecting differences.

Read/Review/Discuss/Do with students:

Review the Directions/Notes with the students. Begin the exercise and tell them:

  1. “I will read a prompt and if you identify with the statement, you will cross to the other side of the room.”

  2. “Next, I will ask you to make eye contact with someone you crossed over with, or someone you stayed behind with.”

  3. “Then make eye contact with someone on the opposite side of them room.”

  4. “Finally, cross back.”

  5. Allow a mature student to come up with related prompts and go through the activity again

Be sure to read the instruction as the exercise continues and make sure that people are not talking or laughing.

Debrief:
Discuss the following questions as follow up (or allow the group to generate their own questions and comments).

  1. How did it feel to cross the room?

  2. How did it feel to stay behind?

  3. Was it ever easy to cross? Easy to stay behind?
