  1. Who are Gatsby’s parents and what is he leaving when he leaves home at age 16?

Gatsby’s parents were unsuccessful farm people . When he left home he left behind his parents. He never accepted them because they were unambitious.

  1. When and why does James Gatz changed his name to Jay Gatsby?

When Gatsby was 17 years old he changed his name because he wanted a better, richer life. He changed his name because it sounded more romantic and sophisticated. He uses it the first time when he rows out to Dan Cody’s yacht.

Nick says, “So he [Gatsby] invented the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen year-old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end.” For James Gatz, what will the ideal Jay Gatsby be, do, and have? Specifically, at night, what sets James’ heart “in a constant, turbulent riot”?

For James Gatz the ideal Jay Gatsby would be rich, have the ability to buy to buy whatever he wanted and he wanted and be with the girl of his dreams., At night his visions of these things set his heart “in a constant turbulent riot.”

  1. To young Gatz, what does Dan Cody’s yacht symbolize?

It symbolizes all the beauty in the world. Gatz has dreams when the yacht arrived about having a better life . The yacht shows him that he dreams can come true.

Ella Kaye, Cody’s mistress got all the the money from Cody’s will. She kept Gatsby from getting his

$25, 000.

  1. Referring to the aftermath of Dan Cody’s death, at the end of the first part of Chapter Six, Nick says, “He [Gatsby] was left with his singularly appropriate education; the vague contour if Jay Gatsby had filled out to the substantiality of a man.” Explain Nick two points.

Daisy does not like the party because of the people who are there. Many of them were drunk and because they are not elite, they are not her type of people.

Gatsy does not understand that Tom and Daisy are elite and no matter how much money he has, he will never be like them or accepted by them. They beileve that this “new money” type of party is below them.

  1. When Gatsby says that he cannot make Daisy understand, what is it that he wants her to understand?

Gatsby wants Daisy top understand that he loves her and wants her to be with him. He wants Daisy to leave Tom and act as if the past five years have not happened.

  1. What is Nick’s view if repeating the past, and what us Gatsby’s opinion? Why is Gatsby’s opinion unrealistic?

Nick’s view is that he wants Daisy to be with him again, just as they were in the past. Gatsby’s opinion is he is going to make everything the way it was before and everything will be fire between he and Daisy. Gatsby’s opinion in unrealistic because it has been five years and they have both changed during this period of time.
