Objective

This opening exercise uses the Rule-of-Four to develop the notion linear function in the context of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill.

Procedure 1—Introduction

1. Read the details of the accident here.

2. Find the site of the Exxon Valdez oil spill on map 2 and trace the flow of oil on map 1.

Procedure 2
Use the Rule-of-Four to develop two linear models of the distance travelled by the oil as a function of time:

i) a linear model based on the average speed of the oil as it moved down the Gulf of Alaska.

ii) a linear regression model




Compare and contrast these two models in terms of how well they match the data.
