Wolf's Lair – Hitler's headquarters

Hitler's headquarters at Gierloz known as the Wolf's Lair is one of the most sinister places in the region, but it attracts many tourists because of its legendary climate. The fortress is composed of 80 buildings, 50 of them are bunkers. The headquarters had its own electric power generator, railway station and an air-strip. Quarters of the top Nazi officials as well as casino and cinema were located in the central part of the compound. The whole area was camouflaged, protected by wire entanglements and mine fields. Retreating in 1945, the Germans dynamited the fortress.

White Nights in St. Petersburg

Although the phenomenon known as the "White Nights" is not unique to St Petersburg, in no other northern city have they received such poetic and literary acclaim. What could be more romantic than a walk along the banks of the city's rivers and canals in almost broad daylight, no matter what the time of day? From late May to early July the nights are bright in St Petersburg. The White Nights (Beliye Nochi) are a curious phenomenon caused by St. Petersburg's very northerly geographical location - at 59 degrees 57' North (roughly on the same latitude as Oslo, Norway, the southern tip of Greenland and Seward, Alaska). St. Petersburg is the world's most northern city with a population over 1 million, and its stands at such a high latitude that the sun does not descend below the horizon enough for the sky to grow dark.

Day 13: May 25       Sightseeing tour of St. Petersburg to include WW2 program Siege of Leningrad

Take a deep breath as we continue our tour of St. Petersburg and “The Siege of Leningrad.” Today we will visit some museums that will help put it all into perspective. For those that need some free time you will have the late afternoon at your leisure to enjoy more of the city and its interesting sites. Overnight St. Petersburg (breakfast and dinner)

Day 15: May 27 St. Petersburg to Moscow by train

After breakfast you have free time for optional excursions or visit one last time your favorite highlight before we depart for Moscow in the late afternoon by train (1st class). The romance of shuttling along the train route that dates back to Imperial Russia is something not to be missed. 3 overnights Moscow, Russia (breakfast)

Moscow is the capital and most populous city. An intriguing full day sightseeing tour of Moscow is planned which will include the Battle of Moscow during World War 2. Overnight Moscow (breakfast and dinner)
