Texas vs. Johnson:
Supreme Court ruled for Johnson. The court ruled that Johnson was protected by the First Amendment and that he could burn a flag as an expression of “free speech”. Since the flag is a symbol the Court ruled that to deny Johnson the right to symbolically express himself they would be denying the very rights that the symbol of the flag conveys, freedom. Texas attempted to argue that the flag is a symbol of unity that cannot be defaced, but the Court countered this saying that they can only encourage the respect of the flag and they cannot punish someone for their act of protest.
