Part B. How Others Have Designed Small-Scale Trebuchets (15 points)


Use the reference list to look up plans for designing a desktop-size trebuchet that launches lightweight projectiles like. On the back of your paper draw plans that you can use to build one of your own. You will be working individually on this activity. Your trebuchet will be made of wooden off-cuts and string. Weights and slings can be of your own choice but must be brought in or comprised of found objects.

Your Challenge
Design a working model trebuchet

Specs:


  • Your trebuchet must be capable of firing a ¾ in diameter wooden marble at least six feet in distance.

  • Its height from base to pivot point must be no more than ten inches.

  • Its pivot mechanism shall utilize a 1/8 in diameter steel rod, 3 inches long

  • Materials shall consist of wood from the woodshop, string, white glue, and hot glue (though no trebuchet will contain more that ½ hot glue stick).

  • Materials used to create the counter weight and sling may be brought from home and are of your choice.

The challenge for you is to design and build a trebuchet that you can aim. You will be required to fire and hit a specified target within a distance of six feet.


Grading will reflect the following design and performance attributes:
Design attributes- How well does the model meet the specifications?

How well does the model perform in its function?

How well does the model demonstrate craftsmanship?

How well does the final drawing reveal details of the model?


Personal performance-

How well does the student demonstrate safe use of machines and machine processes?

How well does the individual demonstrate use of class time to carry out the task?

How well does the individual demonstrate teamwork skills in clean-up and related class tasks?
