Saint Ralph (2005) PG-13 DVD It's the 1953/54 school year at St. Magnus Catholic School in Hamilton, Ontario. Fourteen year old Ralph Walker is in many ways a typical teenager. He is experimenting with smoking and is openly preoccupied with the opposite sex, which makes him the brunt of jokes amongst his male classmates and which constantly gets him into trouble with the school's strict headmaster, Father Fitzpatrick. As penance and to redirect his energies, Father Fitzpatrick orders Ralph to join the school's cross country running team under the tutelage of the school's avant-garde thinking teacher, Father Hibbert. Some of the more unusual circumstances of Ralph's life are that he lives by himself in the family home, telling the authorities that he is living with his paternal grandparents (who are in reality deceased), and telling his widowed hospitalized mother (Ralph's father was killed in the war) that he is staying with a friend. Ralph's focus in life changes after his mother falls into a coma. It will take a miracle for her to come out of that coma. After two unrelated and somewhat innocent comments made to Ralph by Father Hibbert on prayer, purity and faith and running the Boston Marathon, Ralph believes that that miracle will be him winning the 1954 Boston Marathon for which he only has 180 days to train. To obtain the necessary physical and spiritual requirements to achieve this goal, Ralph receives some help from his friends Claire Collins and Chester Jones, and from one of the hospital's compassionate nurses named Alice. Although he believes Ralph's mission is misguided, Father Hibbert, who has his own secret past running history, becomes Ralph's personal trainer. These actions place Father Hibbert and Ralph at odds with Father Fitzpatrick, who sees his and other authority figures' roles as needing to show Ralph his place in life.

Sharky’s Machine (1981) Dir: Burt Reynolds, Bert Reynolds Sharky is a narcotics cop in Atlanta who, while chasing a dealer, gets involved in a shootout that doesn't please the top brass. As a result, he's sent down to the Vice division, which he considers the lowest rung on the ladder. There, he gets involved with the investigation of a double murder of a blind prostitute and her "john". Sharky then assembles his fellow investigators (his "machine") to ferret out the murderer, and he finds out that a powerful mobster & power broker named Victor Score is behind the murder, and they set out to gather info by staking out the apartment of his #1 hustler, a $1,000 dollar-per-night prostitute named Dominoe (Rachel Ward's first feature movie). The hitman strikes again, and soon he's going after Sharky, who takes Dominoe into custody for her safety and to help him nail Victor, but Victor has plenty of accomplices, including one deep within. As of 2004, at 220 feet, the stunt from L.A.'s Hyatt Regency still holds up as the longest outdoor free-fall (no wires) stunt to ever be performed for commercial film. I haven't seen every single movie that Burt Reynolds has ever made, but this one (which I've just finished watching, for the third time) may very well be his best! It suffers only from some slow stretches; Burt perhaps tried to make it more "arty" than it should have been. On the other hand, he managed to avoid many of the usual cliches in the presentation of the "tough cop" role he plays (notice, for example, the scene in which he attempts to kiss Rachel Ward for the first time, or the fear he expresses just before the final showdown with the indestructible Henry Silva). In fact, Silva and those two ninja assassins are three of the most memorable villains of cop thrillers of the 80s. The film also has some offbeat touches, a surprising amount of humor, a brutal and gripping fistfight and many well-directed shots.
