Family of Lillian Mae SHAWHAN (229) & Joseph MACDONALD

457. John MACDONALD (Lillian Mae SHAWHAN7, Richard Johnson6, Robert Fleming5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). John was born in Palisade, Colorado, on October 17, 1921.
During WWII John served as a US Navy Radioman, including mastery of the CW key (Morse Code). Upon returning to civilian life he became a high school baseball coach and teacher, entering administration at Oceanside H. S. in 1954. In 1957 he moved into Junior College Administration in the Oceanside-Carlsbad District in California. In 1982 he became a member of the Oceanside City Council, and, in 1987, he joined San Diego County as a District Supervisor. His many fond family memories include the visits to the ranches of Shawhan in Colorado. He also vividly recalls traveling to the East Coast to visit relatives, in 1941, and being first in line to buy World Series tickets to see the games between the Yankees and the Brooklyn he saw four of the games -- the Yankees eventually winning, from the dropped third strike by the Dodger catcher, Mickey Owen.
On April 10, 1949 John married Gloria Ethel SIMMERLY, in Eureka, California. Gloria Ethel was born in Eureka, California, about 1925.
Gloria was born on a ranch in the Eureka, CA area, and has continued to enjoy an outdoors lifestyle ever since. She has worked as an English teacher and as a Physical Ed. instructor. A fourth generation Californian, she traces her heritage back to Germany, from which the "Zimmerlee" family immigrated, traveling by covered wagon to California.
They had the following children:

i. Kirk. Kirk was born in Louisiana Jolla, California, on October 11, 1955.

Kirk is employed as a Display Advertising Manager for a San Antonio, TX newspaper.
In 1980 Kirk married Debra ADAMS. Debra was born about 1957. They were divorced.

ii. Eric Alan. Eric Alan was born in Louisiana Jolla, California, on February 26, 1957.

Eric works as a landscaper in Hawaii.
iii. Michael Murray. Michael Murray was born in Louisiana Jolla, California, on October 9, 1960.

Michael has worked in Carlsbad, CA as a Sound Engineer, providing audio accompaniment for music concerts and similar entertainment; he also worked at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.


In June 1986 Michael Murray married Kathleen BREZNIAK. Kathleen was born about 1963.

458. Charles Richard SHAWHAN , Sr. (Robert Fleming7, Richard Johnson6, Robert Fleming5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Charles Richard was born in Greeley, Weld County, Colorado, on December 4, 1919. Charles Richard died in Aguila, AZ, on November 2, 1993; he was 73.
During WWII Charles served with the US Army Signal Corps in Canada Alaska, after which he became an engineer with the Boeing Co. in Seattle and other cities before retiring and moving to a permanent mobile home in Aguila, AZ. There he enjoyed reading about the Old and savoring the beautiful scenery which abounds in their valley community, located north of Phoenix. They also made annual visits to their children in the Seattle area. Charles had many fond memories of his childhood visits to his Des Moines relatives -- seeing the coal mines and staying at the ranch with his cousins, the Doles and the Shawhans, where they would ride horses and be told to "go out in that field and swipe some watermelons", not knowing that the melons actually belonged to the ranch -- they thought they were getting by with something! "Chuck" also kept busy in retirement by working as a part-time reporter for the newspaper in Aguila. He was very helpful providing data re the lineage of his tree limb.
On May 3, 1946 Charles Richard first married Alice May MORTON, in Kirkland, WA. Alice May was born in Grand Junction, Colorado, on May 29, 1923. They were divorced.

On December 21, 1968 Charles Richard second married Elizabeth Marie HYDEK, in Bellevue, WA. Elizabeth Marie was born in Warren, Ohio, on September 16, 1923.
459. Harold Kenneth SHAWHAN (Robert Fleming7, Richard Johnson6, Robert Fleming5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Harold Kenneth was born in Greeley, Weld County, Colorado, on October 15, 1923. Harold Kenneth died in Seattle, King County, WA, on July 15, 1986; he was 62.
H. Kenneth was a high school teacher, conducting classes in woodwork, drafting, and similar vocational courses. A highly-skilled craftsman, his hobbies included making furniture, cabinets, and also coin collecting. During WWII he served as a Sgt. in the US Army, from 1943-1946.
On December 29, 1951 Harold Kenneth married Marjorie Ardelle SCHULTZ, daughter of Charles Henry SCHULTZ & Lillian Sophia FREDERICKSON, in Bellevue, WA. Marjorie Ardelle was born in Grafton, ND, on November 18, 1924.
Marjorie was a department store Personnel Director before retirement. Shortly after retiring, she decided to attend the Berkley School of Religion at a summer session to learn the art of Clown Ministry, an avocation that she now thoroughly enjoys, performing at schools, churches, and at other functions. Marjorie has been very helpful in tracing this branch of the family tree, providing photos and other details.

460. Robert Kale SHAWHAN (Richard Kenneth (Ken)7, Richard Johnson6, Robert Fleming5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Robert Kale was born on December 9, 1933.
After serving in the USAF in the 1950s, Robert became a corporate pilot, operating out of Las Vegas, NV. Now semi-retired, he still occasional piloting, but finds himself more involved in the building of houses.
In 1958 Robert Kale first married Judith MONTAG. Judith was born about 1935. They were divorced.
They had the following children:

i. Elizabeth Seri. Elizabeth Seri was born in Des Moines, IA, on March 11, 1959.

ii. Robert Jeffrey. Robert Jeffrey was born in Dallas, Texas, on February 12, 1961.
On March 4, 1990 Robert Kale second married Donna Lynn KNOLL, in Las Vegas, NV. Donna Lynn was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 27, 1954.

461. Nancy Jean SHAWHAN (Richard Kenneth (Ken)7, Richard Johnson6, Robert Fleming5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Nancy Jean was born in Des Moines, IA, on June 21, 1935.
Jean graduated from Drake University in 1957 and then earned her Masters in Social Work from the University of Iowa. She subsequently had a very rewarding career as a School Social Worker, working with all types of children who needed her guidance. Jean and her family lived for many years in Illinois, but eventually moved to Las Vegas, NV, where they live just off the eleventh hole of a golf course. Jean has been quite helpful in providing family data.
On September 12, 1965 Nancy Jean married George HAMILTON, son of James HAMILTON & Jeannie BUCHANAN, in Des Moines, IA. George was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on December 18, 1928.
George was a Civil Engineer and Estimator for a general contractor in Illinois. Now retired and living in Las Vegas, NV, he finds himself constantly at his PC, surfing the Internet.
They had one child:

i. Andrew Kenneth. Andrew Kenneth was born in Lake Forest, Illinois, on November 23, 1968.

Andy graduated from Barat College in Illinois with a degree in Studio

Art but has found a rewarding career as a firefighter/paramedic in

Deerfield, IL.

462. Frederick Pickering SHAWHAN\SHAWN (Benjamin Plummer SHAWHAN7, Joseph Henry6, Benjamin Plummer5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Frederick Pickering was born in Payette, ID, on November 7, 1906. Frederick Pickering died in Largo, FL, on July 29, 1997; he was 90.
While in high school, Fred developed an interest in literature and dramatics; he also worked a territory selling magazines and subscriptions. This led to a varied career in the entertainment starting when he was attending Pomona College in Claremont, CA in 1923. A bass singer, he organized a college quartette which attained enough fame to be offered a vaudeville contract. Beginning in 1927 they traveled for three years under the name of "The Cheerleaders", appearing at picture houses on the West Coast. In 1929 they headed west to try talking pictures, appearing in the Paul Whiteman film, 'King of Jazz". Other theatrical contracts followed, winding up with season on Broadway in "America's Sweetheart", starring Ann Southern and Jack Whiting, and an appearance with W. C. Fields. Fred decided go out on his own, and landed a part with the Ziegfield Follies of 1932, in which he toured on the road. As he stated, "By then show business was falling apart, thanks to the talkies and the Depression, so I decided to go into radio". It was a wise decision. He soon was hired by WLW in Cincinnati as a vocalist and announcer in 1933; it during this period that he elected to begin spelling his surname as "Shawn". After a year, NBC called him to Washington, where he soon made a name for himself covering special events in the Capitol. He is generally credited with conceiving the idea of the March of Dimes annual drive for the benefit of President Roosevelt's Warm Springs Polio Foundation. In 1945 he became an assistant to one of NBC's VPs in charge of programming in New York City. In 1948 he briefly to Washington as Director of Operations for WMAL, but he quickly grabbed the opportunity to join NBC's TV production at Radio City, in New York. After three years in TV, he again found himself back in radio, as an executive, first in Birmingham, AL and then in St. Petersburg, Florida, with WSUN. It was in Florida that he and his wife, Audrey, finally decided to settle down and establish their permanent home.
On August 5, 1939 Frederick Pickering married Audrey Wilhelmina SIEBER. Audrey Wilhelmina was born in Washington, D.C., on April 25, 1914. Audrey Wilhelmina died in Largo, FL, on November 25, 1993; she was 79.

Lee attended Florida State Univ., receiving an Education Degree; she presently teaches 3rd grade in Wellsey Hills, MA.


About 1968 Shirley "Lee" Helene married John Charles DELPH. John Charles was born about 1945. They were divorced.

463. Dorothy SHAWHAN (Henry Hubert7, Joseph Henry6, Benjamin Plummer5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Dorothy was born in Kansas City, MO, on December 21, 1896. Dorothy died in Laguna Hills, California, on August 3, 1973; she was 76.
Dorothy attended Santa Barbara Normal School, (now the Univ. of California), where she met Elmer Krehbiel. They both went on to the University of California at Berkeley, she as an Art major, he in Architecture. After graduation, they settled in Santa Monica, CA, Dorothy teaching Mechanical Drawing in Escondido and Elmer becoming a Woodshop teacher at Santa Monica High School. After their marriage, they bought a lot and, together with Elmer's Dad and a couple others, they built themselves a house. Dorothy had an art studio for a time, but during WWII she became a draftsman in the Engineering Dept. of Douglas Aircraft. After the War she worked for a Beverly Hills architect for a while before retiring to her painting, selling some her work through a gallery in Laguna Beach.
On March 24, 1923 Dorothy married Elmer Milton KREHBIEL, in San Gabriel, California. Elmer Milton was born in Deer Creek, OK, on August 27, 1898. Elmer Milton died in Santa Monica, California, on August 23, 1973; he was 74.
Elmer was the son of Mennonite parents who sold their smithy and wheelwright business in Moundridge, KS to race in the Oklahoma Land Rush from which they established homesteads. They eventually migrated to California, where Elmer became a teacher at Santa Monica High School and subsequently developed a major adult education curriculum for Santa Monica Community College. Eventually he served as an Adult Education Consultant in Germany, before retiring as Vice President of Santa Monica College.

464. Harold Thomas JONES ,Sr. (Bess Irene Addie SHAWHAN7, Joseph Henry6, Benjamin Plummer5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Harold Thomas was born in Fayette, ID, on August 2, 1906.
On June 16, 1937 Harold Thomas married Opal McNATT, daughter of Louis Cass McNATT & Myrtle Pearl BROWN, in Glendale, California. Opal was born in Bowie, Texas, on February 1, 1909.

465. Joseph Reuben SHAWHAN (Glenn Elmo7, Joseph Henry6, Benjamin Plummer5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Joseph Reuben was born in Boise, ID, on May 1, 1907. Joseph Reuben died in Meridian, ID, on November 22, 1947; he was 40.
Joe attended the College of Idaho for two years and later was a switchman for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was quiet, enjoyed singing, and had a good bass voice. He died in Meridian, ID as a result of injuries received in a train/car accident, in which his young son was also injured.
On June 30, 1930 Joseph Reuben married Lula Fay McHENRY, in ID. Lula Fay was born about 1908.
They had the following children:

i. Robert Joseph. Robert Joseph was born in ID on March 24, 1936. Robert Joseph died in Oakland, California, on June 3, 1983; he was 47.

ii. Joseph Wesley. Joseph Wesley was born about 1934.
466. Reuben Wright SHAWHAN (Glenn Elmo7, Joseph Henry6, Benjamin Plummer5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Reuben Wright was born in Boise, ID, on June 18, 1909. Reuben Wright died in Boise, ID, on March 18, 1982; he was 72.
Reuben attended the College of Idaho for two years. As a young man, worked for the Pacific Fruit Express Railway Co., before being during WWII, in which he served as a Navy Radarman on a LCI in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Surviving deadly typhoons and Kamikaze attacks, he returned to civilian life as a much decorated veteran, carrying a Purple Heart and four Bronze Stars. He again worked with the Pacific Fruit Express Railway Company and then with the in Job Services Employment. Typical of his limb of the Shawhan he was a gifted tenor who appeared on live radio in its heyday. He an avid fisherman, often taking fishing trips, with Laverta accompanying him, but she would usually sit and read. He and Laverta are both buried in Dry Creek Cemetery, near Star, ID.
On November 11, 1935 Reuben Wright married LaVerta CLUSTER, in Boise, ID. LaVerta was born in Boise, ID, on March 31, 1910.
During WWII LaVerta became the first female income tax auditor in the USA. After her retirement she was able to concentrate on her hobby of gardening, including a small greenhouse.

467. Robert Elmo "Bob" SHAWHAN (Glenn Elmo7, Joseph Henry6, Benjamin Plummer5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Robert Elmo "Bob" was born in Boise, ID, on April 8, 1911.
Bob attended the College of Idaho for two years, followed by a year Lamar College in Denver before moving to New York to attend Columbia University. It was after one year in New York that he married Ulah Davis. As a musician he has appeared professionally as a singer with such bands as those headed by Freddy Martin and Fred Waring; he has also been featured on radio and TV shows. During WWII he worked at a Douglas Aircraft Plant in Long Beach, California. Between singing engagements, he pursued a career with the California Dept. of Agriculture as a customs agent. He is a keen gardener and enjoys playing the organ for relaxation and pleasure.
On June 2, 1937 Robert Elmo "Bob" married Beulah "Ulah" DAVIS, in Fairfield, VT. Beulah "Ulah" was born in 1909.
Ulah received a degree in Education and had a fulfilling career as a teacher, in both Jr. High and in High School. She is known far and wide for her famous berry pies.

468. Mary Margaret SHAWHAN (Glenn Elmo7, Joseph Henry6, Benjamin Plummer5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Mary Margaret was born in Nampa, ID, on September 11, 1920.
Born in Boise, ID, Mary inherited the talent and enjoyment of music from her parents, often singing in choirs and various musical productions. As the only girl in her family, she had to put up with much teasing from her five older brothers. She attended Sterling College in Kansas, where she met her husband, Richard "Dick" Kneidl.

Their four children were all born in different locations, as Dick's career in aviation frequently resulted in moves. Following Dick's retirement, they have spent a majority of their time attending and organizing Air Stream rallies throughout the country. Mary has in her possession the sword carried by Joseph Henry Shawhan during the Civil War.


On September 11, 1943 Mary Margaret married Richard John "Dick" KNEIDL, in Tarrant County, Texas. Richard John "Dick" was born in Tulsa, OK, on July 13, 1922.

File received ok and thanks, there sure is a lot of great information there. I have not yet had time to really look into the immediate family member connections however, I did notice you show Margaret Alice Kneidl as

deceased about 1968.. She is alive and well and has her own home/cleaning business in Boise...

469. Willard Wood SHAWHAN (Glenn Elmo7, Joseph Henry6, Benjamin Plummer5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Willard Wood was born in Payette, ID, on May 19, 1913. Willard Wood died in Fox Island, Pierce County, WA, on December 2, 1953; he was 40.
Willard attended the College of Idaho for two years, then began working in the bee-honey business, prior to WWII. He subsequently spent many years as a photographer in Visala, CA before moving north to Portland, OR where he added welding to his work efforts. The later made another move, to the state of Washington, where he worked for the school system and managed summer camps on Fox Island. A skilled woodworking craftsman, he built numerous pieces of furniture, many of which have been preserved by his daughter. He was a gifted singer -- several of his early recordings are in the possession of descendants. He was also an avid fisherman.
On May 29, 1937 Willard Wood married Vivian MILLER, in Caldwell, Canyon County, ID. Vivian was born in St. John, OR, on May 12, 1913.
Vivian also attended the College of Idaho, receiving a degree in Education. When relaxing from her role as an elementary teacher in Tacoma, WA area, she enjoys her hobbies of knitting, stitching, and gardening.
They had the following children:

i. Margaret G. (Peggy). Margaret G. (Peggy) was born in Nampa, ID, on November 12, 1940.

Peggy entered her working life by assisting her parents in the operation of the summer camps which they once managed on Fox Island, Washington. Recently, she has performed as a secretary at Tacoma General Hospital. An avid baseball fan, she also enjoys knitting and tracing her family roots; included in her findings are letters sent home by Joseph Henry Shawhan during the Civil War. Peggy has been a source of much of the family data relevant to the descendants of Joseph Henry Shawhan, for which we are very grateful; in particular, her collection of ancestral photos has added to the heritage.

470. Harry Hubert SHAWHAN (Glenn Elmo7, Joseph Henry6, Benjamin Plummer5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Harry Hubert was born in Wallace, ID, on April 18, 1915.
A gifted bass singer, Harry sang in a quartet during his high school days. He then attended the College of Idaho. During WWII Harry worked at the Lockheed Aircraft Plant in Burbank, CA as an inspector on the P38 (Lightning) assembly line. He subsequently was an Audio/Visual Technician with the City of Pasadena and with the school system in Luis Obispo, from which he retired. A skilled tinkerer and electrician, he has patented a few mechanical devices. For relaxation he enjoys playing the organ and being a bass singer in local quartets and as a solo performer.
On May 22, 1947 Harry Hubert married Helen Elizabeth KRUMPECK, daughter of Fred Charles KRUMPECK & Josephine Agnes VACEK, in Pasadena, California. Helen Elizabeth was born in Grand Haven, MI, on January 8, 1911.
As an accountant, Helen met Harry Shawhan in Pasadena,CA as a consequence of doing his income tax return. In 1963, when she moved San Luis Obispo, she joined Cal Poly as an accounting specialist; she eventually retired from that institution. Helen now enjoys club work and gardening. Her father, Fred Krumpeck, immigrated alone from Austria to the USA at the age of 17, eventually working in Michigan and Illinois before going to California; her mother, Josephine Vacek, was also born in Austria. Helen and her husband, Harry, have been quite active in tracing the Shawhan family heritage, and have been very generous in sharing the results of their research.
