About 1849 Elizabeth P. married Robert JACKSON, in Pennsylvania. Robert was born in St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in 1825.
They had the following children:

Note from Merry Anne Pearson: "1830 Census denotes 1 male child 10 but less than 15. Probably this child. 1850 census first found in St Clair Twp then in Birmingham Boro near Nathaniel. Most likely is son."
About 1848 Patterson H. married Lucinda. Lucinda was born in Virginia in 1825.
They had one child:

61. Jesse PEARSON (Jane SHAWHAN5, Robert4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Jesse was born in St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, about 1822.
Note from Merry Anne Pierson: "1830 census denotes 1 male child 5 but less than 10. On 1850 census in lower St. Clair Twp, Jesse Pearson 25, farmer, correct age to be one of Nathaniel's."
About 1847 Jesse married Mary. Mary was born in 1825.
They had one child:

62. Oliver O. SHAWHAN (Mary5, Robert4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Oliver O. was born in Pennsylvania on November 29, 1828. Oliver O. died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on February 10, 1903; he was 74.
Oliver's grave in Southside Cemetery includes an American Legion marker which shows that he served with Co. L, 5 PA. Regiment, Heavy Artillery, US Volunteers, during the Civil War. His enlistment papers, dtd Aug. 24, 1864, describe him as being 5ft 9in, fair complexion, 36 yrs. old, with grey eyes, light hair, and due a bounty of $100. His duties were those of a driver. His obit mentions that he was a pioneer resident of the South Side section of Pittsburgh and that during the Civil War he was wounded , from which he never fully recovered.
On November 1, 1849 Oliver O. married Hannah HERSHBERGER, in Pennsylvania. Hannah was born in Pennsylvania in 1828. Hannah died in Pennsylvania on December 22, 1897; she was 69.
They had the following children:

i. Andrew. Andrew was born on July 8, 1850.

On June 12, 1881 Catherine Grace (Kate) first married James P. HUGHES, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. James P. was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, about 1854. They were divorced.

On March 21, 1888 Catherine Grace (Kate) second married John M. BAKER. John M. was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 1, 1860.

iv. Ida May. Ida May was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 26, 1866. Ida May died in Pennsylvania on September 19, 1916; she was 50.

On October 13, 1903 Ida May married Edward CHRISTIANSEN. Edward was born in Norway on March 12, 1866.

63. Imogene SHAWHAN (Daniel5, Robert4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Imogene was born in Pittsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on October 6, 1835. Imogene died in Leavenworth, Kansas, in May 1923; she was 87.
On June 1, 1851 Imogene married Robert Brown CRAIG, in Pennsylvania. Robert Brown was born in Ireland on September 23, 1823. Robert Brown died in Leavenworth, Kansas, on July 10, 1885; he was 61.
They had the following children:

64. Georgia Montgomery SHAWHAN (Daniel5, Robert4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Georgia Montgomery was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on October 8, 1837. Georgia Montgomery died in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on June 12, 1907; she was 69.
About 1860 Georgia Montgomery married Samuel R. SLOAN, in Pennsylvania. Samuel R. was born in 1834. Samuel R. died in 1894; he was 60.
They had the following children:

65. Williametta (Willie) SHAWHAN (Daniel5, Robert4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Williametta (Willie) was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on August 27, 1848. Williametta (Willie) died in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on March 17, 1929; she was 80.
In her will, "Willie" bequeathed many of her prized possessions to her grandchildren, including her solid silver table-ware, her writing desk, her chif-robe, and the sword carried by her late husband during the Civil War.
About 1870 Williametta (Willie) married J. W. SIMPSON, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. J. W. was born in 1845. J. W. died in Pennsylvania on September 27, 1895; he was 50.
Served in Co. I, 15th Kan. Calvary during Civil War, per his tombstone in Chartiers Cemetery, Carnegie, PA.
They had one child:

66. Robert R. SHAWHAN (John5, Robert4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Robert R. was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on January 1, 1828. Robert R. died in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, on March 6, 1905; he was 77.
In 1861 Robert and Eva were living in East Williamsport, PA; by 1868 they had moved to Roxbury, OH, near Marietta. The 1880 Census listed them in Montgomery Co., OH. For the family history of this Robert Shawhan, 1828-1905, we are particularly indebted to the efforts of the Pearl Shawhan Earnest family and to Mary Elizabeth Shawhan Sanders and her husband, Wilbur.
About 1850 Robert R. married Eva A. HART, in Allegheny County, Ohio. Eva A. was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, on March 8, 1830. Eva A. died in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, on October 23, 1888; she was 58.
They had the following children:

Family of Robert Perry SHAWHAN (16) & Mary PLUNKETT

67. Francis (Frank) SHAWHAN (Robert Perry5, Robert4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Francis (Frank) was born in WV in 1841. Francis (Frank) died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on February 26, 1895; he was 54.
The 1880 census shows Frank as a glass blower and his son, Edward, as a glass tender. Frank served in the US Navy during the Civil War era. His brief obit mentioned that he died, of pneumonia, at the workhouse after being picked up for being a vagrant.
About 1868 Francis (Frank) married Mary E. McINTYRE, in Pennsylvania. Mary E. was born about 1847.
They had the following children:

i. Edward. Edward was born in 1869.

ii. Mary. Mary was born in 1869.

iii. Mamie. Mamie was born on December 27, 1869.

iv. Maggie. Maggie was born on December 4, 1871.

v. Lody. Lody was born in 1872.

68. Daniel Shawhan PRINE (Elizabeth Ann SHAWHAN5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Daniel Shawhan was born in Kentucky in 1816. Daniel Shawhan died in IA in 1896; he was 80.
Daniel was one of the first members of this family group to migrate Iowa, taking up land 4 miles west of Oskaloosa.
In 1837 Daniel Shawhan married Nancy THRASHER. Nancy was born in 1816. Nancy died in 1886; she was 70.
They had one child:

69. Miles Kenneth PRINE (Elizabeth Ann SHAWHAN5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Miles Kenneth was born in Kentucky in 1821. Miles Kenneth died in Oskaloosa, IA, in 1900; he was 79.
Miles led his family from Indiana to Iowa in 1861; their son George, then ten years old, was able to drive one of the teams. They settled near Oskaloosa, initially in a little old log house, but they eventually built a much larger home and gave the log house to their son George. Miles was a Lt. with the "Madison Blues" during the Civil War. After the War, Miles went into the business of blooded stock raising, exporting, and shipping to all the fine breeders of stock in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. This business continued through 43 years, under the name of M. K. Prine & Son. Miles died of apoplexy, as did his son.
On October 5, 1845 Miles Kenneth married Mary NELSON, daughter of Jacob NELSON & Mary CAMPBELL, in Bentonville, Fayette County, Indiana. Mary was born in Fayette County, Indiana, in 1822. Mary died in Oskaloosa, IA, in 1893; she was 71.
They had one child:

70. Matthew Loeper PRINE (Elizabeth Ann SHAWHAN5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Matthew Loeper was born in Indiana in 1833. Matthew Loeper died in Norwalk, IA, in 1900; he was 67.

On September 19, 1854 Matthew Loeper married Hester SHORTRIDGE, daughter of Samuel SHORTRIDGE & Eleanor HULSE, in Fayette County, Indiana. Hester was born in Fayette County, Indiana, on August 31, 1836.
They had the following children:

iv. William T. William T. was born on September 26, 1855.

v. Edward V. Edward V. was born in Norwalk, Iowa, on December 6, 1857.

71. James SHAWHAN (Joseph5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). James was born in Pike County, Indiana, on December 18, 1823. James died in Pike County, Indiana, on May 23, 1904; he was 80.
James had little education as he was being raised, helping his father farm until he reached the age of 25. He bought his own farm in 1848, in Clay Twp., Pike Co.. He eventually moved his family from the farm to city life in Washington, Davies Co., IN. where he established a livery business; at the same time he traded and sold livestock. In early 1869 he sold his livery and moved to Petersburg, IN, continuing to deal in livestock and opening the Shawhan Hardware Store. The became an immediate success, and the young man he hired to run it, James Boonshot, turned out to be his son-in-law. His wealth and success resulted in his becoming the president of the Citizen's State Bank, a position he held until his death.

On October 26, 1845 James first married Virginia CARR, daughter of William H. CARR & Margaret, in Pike County, Indiana. Virginia was born in Pike County, Indiana, on December 17, 1829. Virginia died in Pike County, Indiana, on May 16, 1875; she was 45.
They had the following children:

ii. Mary Belle. Mary Belle was born in Washington, Davies County, Indiana, on January 7, 1868. Mary Belle died in Pike County, Indiana, on June 29, 1952; she was 84.

Mary Belle was well educated and extremely talented. An article appearing in the Winslow Dispatch tells it best: "I couldn't help recalling some of the incidents of one wonderful lady who lived in community for so many years. She was in the same spot in church whenever the doors were open. If anyone was in need he or she could always find help in her. Whenever she came into a group, it was as though someone turned on a ray of sunshine. Regardless of what the situation was she always had a little verse or poem to fit the occasion. She helped several young people through college when their own funds were insufficient. She noticed the birds, the flowers, the sunsets, and all those things so many people miss in life. Mary Belle Nichols was one that really took time to enjoy life."


On September 28, 1887 Mary Belle married George Jerome NICHOLS, in Pike County, Indiana. George Jerome was born in Pike County, Indiana, on October 23, 1857. George Jerome died in Pike County, Indiana, on March 3, 1912; he was 54.

iii. UNNAMED. died on January 17, 1868 in Pike County, Logan Township, Indiana. was buried in Carr Cemetery, Logan Township, Pike County, Indiana.


On October 26, 1878 James second married Lorenda MORRISON, in Pike County, Indiana. Lorenda was born in Pike County, Indiana, on March 31, 1826. Lorenda died in Pike County, Indiana, on July 4, 1892; she was 66.

During the Civil War, Orvis served as a Pvt. in Co. E, 42nd Indiana Infantry, fighting is such battles as Perryville, Murpheesboro, Chattanooga, Chickamauga, and in Sherman's March to the Sea.

75. Elizabeth SHAWHAN (Joseph5, Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Darby1). Elizabeth was born in Clay Twp., Pike County, Indiana, on December 2, 1828. Elizabeth died in Petersburg, Pike County, Indiana, on November 7, 1917; she was 88.
Elizabeth went through a bitter divorce battle with Napoleon Green, her husband; child custody was a key issue. In her testimony she testified "Because of abuse and ill treatment, I was forced to leave him and go to the house of my father." Elizabeth retained custody of her children.
On February 27, 1844 Elizabeth married Napoleon Bonaparte GREEN, son of William GREEN & Elizabeth COOPER, in Pike County, Indiana. Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Woodford County, Kentucky, in 1816. Napoleon Bonaparte died in Grayville, White County, Illinois, on February 23, 1881; he was 65. They were divorced in Indiana.
His death record in the White Co., IL County Clerk's Office, dated March 11, 1881, reveals that Napoleon died of typhoid pneumonia, at 10:00 PM, Feb. 23, 1881. He was a white male, age 65, born in Kentucky, a shoemaker, had been in Illinois for 14 years, and was buried in Grayville, IL.
They had the following children:

i. Mary. Mary was born in Pike County, Indiana, on September 29, 1845. Mary died in Pike County, Indiana, on May 8, 1853; she was 7. Mary was buried in Shawhan Cemetery, Madison Township, Pike County, Indiana.
