Lesson: Courtly Love,& Chivalry

Sir Gawain and The Green Knight

  • Anticipatory Set

    • I will introduce the students to courtly love and the ideals of chivalry by using the technology app called: QuickVoice. One such Arthurian legend is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which is the text that we will be using today. I will have pre-recorded a selection for the kids to listen to.

  • Input

    • The main goal of this lesson is for the students to be able to understand courtly love and chivalry, and then be able to recognize it in the text that we will be reading, pulling examples from the text and applying it to a real-life setting.

    • I will start with a powerpoint that has information on Courtly Love and Chivalry, with pictures and fun videos from YouTube. During the slide show, I will ask the students to write down the Code of Chivalry as well as the rules of Courtly Love, since they are to be used in a later activity.

    • After the powerpoint, I will divide the class into groups of three, then hand each group a piece of paper with a situation on it. The student will have to get up in front of the class, read the situation, and then react to it theatrically. Their reaction will have to align with the rules and codes that I had them write down during the powerpoint. They will explain why they reacted this way and what rule it coincides with.

    • After this activity, we will read Sir Gawain. I will call on random students to read one after another, so that the students do not know who will be called next, and therefore must always be paying attention.

  • Check for understanding

    • After reading Sir Gawain, I will ask them to open up their packets to Literary Analysis page and have them do the activity of finding the characteristics of medieval romance within the text. I will then call on random students to read to me what they found, and then we will discuss if it applies.

    • After the worksheet, I will present them with a quick-write, which I will give them time to write. After they respond to the quick-write, I will call on random students and ask for their responses.

  • End

    • After the quick-write, I will pull the powerpoint back up and watch a cartoon version of Sir Gawain for a fun and relaxing ending to the lesson.
