Bracero Program

Purpose:


  • The academic purpose of this lesson is to examine and understand the Bracero Program.

Learning Objectives:



  • Students will be able to explain the purpose of the Bracero Program and the reason for its creation. The students will examine the desire of the Mexicans to become a worker in the U.S. The students will analyze photos, testimonials, newspaper articles, and a video to get an understanding of what the workers went through.

  • To do this, the students will be shown a Power Point that will introduce the lesson and give the background information of the development of the Bracero Program. After that, the students will be put into pairs or a small group to explore the rest of the lesson using the computer. On the computer, the students will be directed to the website that they will have to use in order to answer the guided questions. The guided questions are divided into sections and follow the tabs on the website.

Introduction:



  • Begin the lesson with a power point covering the background information of the Bracero Program and the reason why it was implemented. The first slide will show recent pictures of migrant workers. Ask the students if they know anyone who came to this country to work. Along with the power point, there is guided notes for the introduction section. There is a slide that will direct the students to get into pairs or small groups and utilize a computer.

Body:


  • After the power point, the students will get into pairs or small groups and utilize a computer for the rest of the lesson. Directions for each section can be found on the top line for each section.

  • First Section: Bracero Workers The students will have to do a photo analysis of 8 photos.

  • Second Section: Bracero Articles The students will have to read two articles.

  • Third Section: Bracer Worker’s Testimonial The students will need to click on the link below the directions and it will take them to a new page using a different tab. When they are done with this section, have them close the tab and return to the lesson page.

  • Fourth Section: Bracero Video Clip The students will need to click on the link below the directions and it will take them to a new page using a different tab. When they are done with this section, have them close the tab and return to the lesson page.

Assessment and Closure:



  • Since the lesson is accompanied with guided notes, expect the students to complete 90% of their assignment.

  • To close, ask them to share any story they have about coming to a new country and the difficulties they faced or that their family faced. (Volunteers Only)
