PROJECT OBJECTIVES: To write a Persuasive Essay that explains whether or not Westward Expansion was ethical or unethical in the 1800’s.
TENTATIVE DUE DATE: March 29th, 2013
Instructions:

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be studying how the United States, little by little, began expanding westward in the 1800’s. After learning of what territory the US acquired, you will then have to decide each day whether or not the US had the right to do it or not by writing a minimum 1 paragraph (5 sentence) reflection that provides historical evidence to support your opinion. It is okay if your opinion changes each day because you won’t write your Overall Thesis until the unit is coming to an end.
To write each paragraph, you will have to consider the following before choosing your daily opinion:

  1. Did the US benefit positively or negatively by adding territory?

  2. Were American citizens affected positively or negatively by this expansion?

  3. Did America practice DIPLOMACY or IMPERIALISM while moving Westward?

The FINAL ESSAY, when dropped off, will include:

    1. Intro (Hook and Clearly Stated THESIS)

    2. 5-6 Supporting Paragraphs (2-3 Double-Spaced Pages)

    3. KEY WORDS Throughout
