Notes for Nathaniel Donis:

Dec 2007: Email received from Robert Donis II. Included the following from Tom Cook.

"With this information it was then easy to go directly to the birth index for the City of Portland and soon found Robert Oliver Donis' birth record which indicated the names of his father and mother: Nathaniel and Helga Donis. (though not her maiden name.)

Going then to the 1920 U.S. Census Soundex for the State of Oregon, it was easy to find the family of Nathaniel and Helga, and their six children (Ruth, Harold, Robert, Helen, Hazel, and Phyllis) living at No. 1774 Droid St. in North Portland.

Nathaniel Donis, the paternal grandfather, was born 27 February 1883 in the village of Norka, Province of Saratov, Russia, and came to America with his parents and seven brothers and sisters in the summer of 1890.

Nathaniel's parents were John Peter Donis and Catherine Elizabeth Sinner of the village of Norka, who emigrated from their home, no doubt after receiving letters from family members who had settled near Lincoln, Nebraska. These people were fleeing yet another series of poor harvests on the steppes of the Volga region in Russia where their ancestors had farmed for one Hundred and thirty years. Adding to the desire to emigrate, was the fact that these German-speaking people living in Russia had by Imperial decree in 1871 lost their special exclusion from Russian military conscription. The result being that at least some of the Volga Germans fled Russia so their sons could avoid the draft.

Making their way from the large port city of Saratov, the family of ten, probably barged ?

Nov 2010: Hugh Lichtenwald's website.

"1910 US Census of Portland, Multnomah co., OR lists Nathaniel Donis 27, wife Hilda 26, children: Ruth C. 4, Harold N. 2 and Robert D. 5/12.
