Ishmal Blackburn Jr., 85, of Pinsonfork, KY, passed away Friday September 2, 2011 at his residence.

He was born June 6, 1926 at Pinsonfork, Ky to the late Ishmal Blackburn Sr. and Isabella Ball Blackburn. He was also preceded in death by five sisters; Faustina Helvey, Georgia Ann O'Leary, Lillian Weddington, Minnie Edgar Hill and Mildred Mae Mullins, seven brothers; Lawson Blackburn, Charlie B. BLackburn, Otice Blackburn, Thomas Fred Blackburn, Jimmy Hayes Blackburn, Alex Blackburn and Toney Lee Blackburn.

He is survived by two brothers; Richard Blackburn of Pinsonfork, Ky and James H. Blackburn of Hatfield, Ky. and three sisters; Omadoll Allen of Charlotte, N.C., Polly Liza Whoberry of Illinois and Marilyn Coleman of Pinsonfork, Ky. and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Monday September 5, 2011 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Buddy Kendrick and Gerria Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow at Blackburn Cemetery, Pinsonfork, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be after 6 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Dexter S. Horn, 78, of McVeigh, Kentucky, formerly of Prestonsburg, Kentucky passed away Thursday, September 1, 2011 in the Appalachian Regional Hospital, in South Williamson, Kentucky.

Born April 2, 1933 at Prestonburg, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Donald and Dorothy (Shepherd) Horn. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Emma Lou Hunt Horn who died in 1988; two sons, Phillip Anthony Horn and Jeffery Alan Horn; and Great Grandson, Cameron Keith Crum.dexter_horn2.jpg

Dexter was a Surface Mine Grates Operator for Addington Mining Company, a member of the McAndrews Church of Christ and a member of the Zebulon Lodge #273 F&AM.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Kennedy Staton Horn; one son, Randall David Horn of Stanville, Kentucky; three daughters, Sherry Horn (Larry) Crum of Martin, Kentucky, Sandra Renee Horn Hammond of Martin, Kentucky and Angela S. (Terry) May of McVeigh, Kentucky; special Niece, Lisa Ann Smith of McVeigh, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Kevin Vincent (Tonya) Crum, Keith David Crum, Scott Alan Horn, Ashley (Ronnie) Harris, Sara Nicole Horn, Michael Blake Horn and Staton Michael Miles May; seven great grandchildren, Kyla Cox, Kolten David Crum, Nathaniel Southerland Crum, Michael Blake Brown, Chloe Harris, Seth Harris and Lucas Harris and a host of loving friends.

Funeral Services will be held 11 A.M. Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at the Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with David Parsley officiating. Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Kentucky, with Kevin Crum, Keith Crum, Dewayne Scalf, Steve Scalf, Carl Tussey, Ron Hepler, Donnie Estep, Roger Bowen and Roger Clemons serving as pallbearers.

She was born December 29, 1960 in Detroit, MI to Mary Kathryn Hickman of Turkey Creek, KY and the late James Edward Hickman. She was preceded in death by her son; Brian Duncan, brother; Phillip Hickman, grandparents; Cleo Hammond and Alex Vagott and James and Hazel Hickman, step father; Dave Burgess.

She was a homemaker and was very active in the community. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and daughter.

She is survived by her husband; Willis Duncan, sons; Moses (Brandy Locke) Ailiff of Warfield, KY and Jonathan (Amanda) Duncan of Matewan, WV, daughter; Melinda (Brian) Blankenship of Inez, KY, sisters; Alice Hickman (Rick) Elia of Williamson, WV and Regina Hickman (Keith) Looney of Slater's Branch, KY brother; John Hickman of Tenn, grandchildren; Ashley Blankenship, Aurora Ailiff, Owen Ailiff, Alex Ailiff, Katelyn Blankenship, Bryer Ailiff, Landon Ailiff, Braydon Blankenship, Lila Duncan and Kamryn Duncan and a host of loving family and friends.

She was born December 24, 1922 in Ypsilanti, MI to the late Anthony "Tony" and Theresa Began. She was also preceded in death by her husband; Ray M. Stafford, brothers; Tony Began and John Began and her beloved sister; Margaret (Charles) Hatfield.

She was a homemaker, a Catholic and was employed by G. C. Murphy Co. for 30 years.


Mary is survived by her nieces and nephews, Greg Hatfield, Theresa Cassell, Debbie Abshire, Sharon Grimmett, Anetta Swafford, Nancy Kline and Chuck Hatfield and a host of great nieces and nephews, also great-great nieces and nephews who loving refer to her as simply Nanny.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Thursday September 8, 2011 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Conrad Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow at Alley Cemetery with Danny Cassell, Arthur Kline, Eric Whitt, Jason Whitt, Chayce Swafford and Hayden Hatfield serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 6 till 9 PM Tuesday and Wednesday night at the funeral home with special services at 7 PM Wednesday night with Ron Acord officiating.

He was born June 16, 1932 at Freeburn, Ky., to the late Don and Louise Francis Mayhorn. he is also preceded in death by one granddaughter; Brianna Hope Mayhorn and his grandparents; Melvin and Elizabeth Mayhorn.

He was a retired coal miner, a member of the U.M.W.A Local Union 8840 and a member of the Faith Mission Church.

He is survived by his wife; Alice Mayhorn, sons; David Mike Mayhorn of Statesville, N.C., Donnie "Skippy" (Mary) Mayhorn Jr. of North Matewan, W.V., Gary (Gretchen) Mayhorn of Statesville, N.C., and Brian (Teresa) Mayhorn of Cleveland, N.C. daughter; Linda (Troy) Christian of Mooresville, N.C. brothers; Glen (Linda) Mayhorn of Pinsonfork, Ky. and Bill (Brenda) Mayhorn of Lynn, W.V. sister; Marie Layne of Valparaiso, IN, seventeen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Edna May, 86 of McVeigh, Ky. passed away Saturday, September 10, 2011 at the Pikeville Medical Center,

She was born February 15, 1925 in Pike County, Ky. the daughter of the late Bud and Sarah Sawyers Fields. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Glen Earl May; brothers, Arnold and Bill Fields; sisters, Shirley Ball, Elaine Halsey, Ann McCoy and Donna Trout and one grandson, Allen May. She was a homemake and of the Church of God Faith.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Allen May and Robin Glen May both of McVeigh, Ky.; two sisters, Jeanette Underhill of Good Hope, GA. and Joan Wellman of Ft. Wayne, IN; three brothers, Bob Fields of Pineville, WV, Barry Fields of Corbin, KY and Rodney Fields of London, KY; one granddaughter, Wendy May of California and one great grandson, Daniel and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday, September 12, 2011 at the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with David Kilburn and Harles Ray officiating. She was born April 7, 1938 at Hager Hill, Ky. the daughter of the late Walter and Delphia Watson. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Rodney Watson and a half sister, Ruth Holschbach.

She was a retired school teacher from the Pike County Board of Education, having taught at both Runyon and Bevins Elementary School. She was also on the Board of Directors of PCA for over ten years and a member of the Victory in Jesus Church.

Survivors include her loving husband, Edmond Dotson of Pinsonfork, Ky.; son, Edward Lee (Nancy) Dotson of Pinsonfork, Ky.; daughter, Anita Louise (Rick) Morris of Dacula, Georgia; brothers, Richard, Gary, Gene, Jimmy, Michael and Ronnie Watson; sisters, Ollie Rowe, Margaret Matney, Janet Thacker and Shelby Varney; four grandchildren, Brandon, Aaron, Jeff and Alanne; two step grandchildren, Angel and Craig; one great grandchild, Javan; four step great grandchildren, Breanna, Dakota, Madison and Kira and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 1 PM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

He was born August 14, 1945 the son of the late Alton and Opal Holland Pinson. He was also preceded in death by brothers, John Oliver Pinson, James Pinson and Charles Edward Pinson and one sister, Minnie Lucille Smith.

He was a retired coal miner with Thacker Energy, a member of Thomas C. Cecil Masonic Lodge #375 F. & A.M, a veteran of the United State Army having served in Vietnam and a member of Belfry Chapter #141 D.A.V.

He is survived by a son, Wayne Eugene Pinson of Canada, Ky.; daughters, Penny Lynn Young of Pikeville, Ky. and Cheryl Denise Carter of Portsmouth, Ohio; brothers, Billy Harold Pinson of Hatfield, Ky., Donnie Junior Pinson of Canada, Ky. and Lonnie Dale Pinson of Mt. Sterling, Ky.; sisters, Lois Kaye Stanley of Ohio and Sharon Faye Pinson of Kermit, WV and grandchildren, Shelby Denise Thacker, Cameron Bailey Tackett, Kaylynn Grace Carter, Shaina Michelle Young and Morgan Kinley Pinson and a host of other family and friends.

He was born January 25, 1921 at Lynnside, W.V. to the late William Riley Simpkins Sr. and Lydia Hensley Simpkins. He is also preceded in death by a daughter; Brenda Wolford, brothers; Golden, Everett, Clyde, James and Ken Simpkins and an infant brother: sisters, Edna Flemmings and Thursey Boggs.

He was a retired coal miner, a member of the U.M.W.A., Little Rosie Old Regular Baptist Church for 26 years and a veteran of U.S. Army in W. W. II.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years; Margie Cisco Simpkins, brother; Lawrence (Jonell) Simpkins of Columbus, OH, grandchildren; Lori Carter of Louisville, Ky., and Gary Steven Wolford of Dry Ridge, Ky., and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 A.M. Friday September 16, 2011 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Wayne Herald, Elbert Sesco and Tom Dials officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, W.V. with family and friends serving as pallbearers. D.A.V. will conduct Graveside Military Services.

James Ernest Pinson, 85, of Sidney, KY, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at the Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born April 11, 1926 in Pike County, Ky. the son of the late Sam and Myrtie Blackburn Pinson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Pinson; sister, Alice Harper and four brothers, Luther, Clyde, Albert and Charles Pinson and one niece and one nephew.

He was a retired driver from Armour Meat Company and a veteran of the US Army.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Shirley Osborne, Karen Opal, Janice Johnson, Donnie Pinson, Hollis Pinson, Randall Pinson, Thaddeus Pinson, Michael Pinson, Jackie Francis, Jonathan Francis, Danny Robinson, Joey and Bertha Robinson, John Robinson, Paul David King, Gail Cornish, Joan Blackburn, Patty Bevins, Rita Blackburn and Anita Smith and John and Tammy Maynard of Sidney, Ky. whom he considered his family and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 16, 2011 at 2 PM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Donnie Pinson officiating. Burial will follow in the Pinson Cemetery, Rockouse Fork of Sidney, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Franklin Delano Scalf, 77, of Sidney, KY, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at the Pikeville Medical Center. franklin scalf.jpg

He was born December 22, 1933 in Leckieville, Ky. the son of the late Willie Morgan Scalf Sr. and Ethel Bevins Scalf. Besides his parents, Frankie was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean Stanley Scalf, brother, Willie Morgan Scalf Jr. "Junior", sisters, Ernestine Blackburn and Maxine Slater and nephew, Gary Cornette.

He attended Belfry High School, graduating with the class of 1951. after high school he was employed by Pond Creek Collieries. He then went to work at Persinger Supply and later worked several years with the Kentucky State Highway Department. He was last employed by Island Creek Coal Company, where he retired. Frankie was a member of the Sidney Missionary Baptist Church dedicating his life to the Lord in 1982.

Frankie is survived by his two children, Sharon (Randall) Ratliff of Kimper and Karen (D.G.) McCoy of Sidney; two grandsons, Brandon Chase McCoy of Sidney, Ky. and Bryan Randall Ratliff of Kimper; brother, Edgar (Ernestine) Scalf of Pikeville, Ky.; sister, Janice Cornette of Ashland, Ky.; sister-in-laws, Faye Scalf of Sidney, Ky. Inis Taylor of Palatka, Fl. Betty Mae Stanley of Canada, Ky. and Myrtle Carden of Hopewell, Va. and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Visitation will be at R.E. Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Ky. Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, September 18 after 6 PM with special singing at 7 PM on Sunday.

Funeral services will be at the Sidney Missionary Baptist Church on Monday, September 19, 2011 at 2 PM. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery, Sidney, Ky. with nephews and grandsons serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Claude P. Smith, Alvery Smith, Frank T. Welch, Jack Farley, John L. Williamson, Ray Jude and the men of the Grumpy Old Men's coroner.

Irvin "Curley" Hatfield, 86 of Slaters Branch, KY, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at his home.irvin hatfield.jpg

He was born June 29, 1925 at Hardy, Ky. the son of the late Fred B. and Laura Hatfield, he was raised on Pickle Bean Hollow at Blackberry He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vivian Francis Ledford and two brothers, Fred B. Hatfield and an infant brother that died at birth.

He served in World War II in the as did his brother and father. While in service he traveled around the world and fought in all the major battles aboard ship as a Navy armed guard's gunman. After coming out of service he married his first wife, Vivian Francis Ledford and they had one son, Rodney Gail Hatfield. After his first wife died he later married Evelyn Ann Slater who had a son, Charles Jeffery and later they had a daughter, Rebecca Ann Hatfield. He also leaves behind nieces, Judy, Amanda and Cadence.

He was a devoted coal miner for over 37 years and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. As of the 23rd of this month, he and Evelyn would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 1 PM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel Burial will follow in the Hatfield Cemetery, Blackberry, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held after 6 PM Friday, September 16, 2011 at the Funeral Home Chapel.

Elmer Thacker, 87 of Huddy, KY, passed away Thursday, September 22, 2011 at his home after a lingering illness.elmer thacker.jpg

Elmer was born June 10, 1924 at Canada, Ky. the son of the late Landon and Stella Smith Thacker. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Fred Smith, Floyd B., Bobby, Billy, Tunis and Sammy Thacker and one sister, Goldie Williamson.

Elmer was a retired coal miner from Eastern Coal Corp. and also retired from Nutone in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a faithful member and ordained minister of the Primitive Baptist Church since January 16, 1966 and a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his loving wife, Beatrice Irene Blackburn Thacker of Huddy, Ky.; Timothy Dwayne Thacker of the Home; daughter, Mary Ellen (Skeeter) West of Canada, Ky.; four brothers, R. T. Thacker of Wellington, Ky., Jack Thacker of Cincinnati, Ohio, Edgar Thacker and Sonny Thacker both of Canada, Ky.; two sisters, Lena Mae Biesecker of Newark, De. and Barbara Leedy of Canada, Ky.; three grandchildren, Amanda Ryan, Johnathan Russell and Nicholas Clayton West all of Canada, Ky. and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Sunday September 25, 2011 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Mike Elswick, Randall Thornsbury, David Allen Thacker and David May officiating. Burial will follow at Coburn Point Cemetery with Nephews serving as pallbearers. Belfry Chapter #141 will conduct Military Graveside Services.

Visitation will be after 6 PM Friday and Saturday night at the funeral home with special services both nights at 7 PM.

Paula Jean Reed, 45 of Sidney, KY, passed away Wednesday night, September 21, 2011 at her residence.

She was born May 1, 1966 at Williamson, W.V. to Nita Jean Smith West of Sidney, Ky. and the late Tunis West. She is also preceded in death by her grandparents; Cullen and Ethel Smith and Finis and Flora West. She was a homemaker and a member of the Williamson Area Church of Christ.

Besides her mother she is survived by her husband; Phillip Rodney Reed, daughter; Ashley Elyse Tussey of South Williamson, Ky. brothers; Steve West of Sidney, Ky and Jarrod West of of Sidney, Ky. sisters; Sandy Reed of Canada, Ky. and Allyson Kendrick of Sidney, Ky. and a host of loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 PM Monday September 26, 2011 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Charles Reed officiating. Burial will follow at Crigger Cemetery Sidney, Ky with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Lucas Vernon Whitt, 30, of Ransom, KY, passed away September 23, 2011 at his residence.

He was born October 26, 1980 at South Williamson, Ky. to Claude Herman Whitt of Ransom, Ky., and Connie (Bucky) Scott of Hardy, Ky., He is also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents; Vernon and Sadie Whitt, maternal grandparents; Olen Thomas and Lou Wanna Pope and a special aunt; Shirley Conley and his cousin; Brandon Pope.

He was a coal miner.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife; Amy Justice Whitt, children; Lucas Cooper Whitt and Emma Grace Whitt of the home, brothers; Eric (Jody) Whitt of Ransom, Ky.,, Adam Whitt of Ransom, Ky,, and Cory Del Scott of Hardy, Ky. step brothers; Bruce Scott of Stone, Ky., Brian Scott of Stone, Ky., and Steve Scott of Hardy, Ky., step sister; Crystal Scott of Pinsonfork, Ky., sister-in-law; Leah Ray of Hardy, Ky., brother-in-law; B. J. Justice of Lancaster, Ky., special nieces and nephews; Dalton Whitt, Cassie Whitt and Brady Whitt all of Ransom, Ky., and a host of Aunts, Uncles, Family and Friends.

He will be sadly missed by all that knew him and loved him.Lucas was a great man to be around. He was a loving, caring, funny and so energetic. He loved everyone and cared deeply for his family, his wife and his children.

Myrtha Lowe Skinner, 94, of Ravenna, OH, formerly of Hatfield, Ky. passed away Saturday, September 24, 2011 in the Maplewood Care Center, Streetsboro, Ohio.

She was born July 12, 1917 at Hatfield, Ky. the daughter of the late Tandy D. Lowe Sr. and Mary L. Caines Lowe. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward Skinner; sister, Blanche Nelson; brothers, Blake Lowe and Don Lowe Jr. and a grandson, Joseph Edward Lowe.

Myrtha was a homemaker and a member of the North Peninsula Baptist Church, Ormond Beach, Fl.
