He is survived by his wife, Kilcha Cho Ball of Pinsonfork, Ky.; three sons, James McKinley Ball of North Carolina, William Robert Ball of Stopover, Ky. and Joseph Matthew Ball of Stone, Ky.; one sister, Kathleen Grizzle of WV; tthree brothers, Franklin Grizzle of Tennessee, R. Burial will follow in the Sullivan Family Cemetery, Pinsonfork, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Belfry D.A.V. Chapter #141 will have Military graveside services. Visitation will be held after 6 PM Tuesday at the funeral home with special services at 7 PM.

Jean Ann Thacker, 79, of Canada, KY passed away Sunday night, May 1, 2011 in The Rockcastle Hospital, Mt. Vernon, Ky.jean ann thacker.jpg

She was born December 17, 1931 in Pike County, Ky. the daughter of the late John and Gertrude Smith Thacker, She was also preceded in death by a brother, David B. Thacker and a nephew, David Eugene Thacker.

Jean Ann was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Old Regular Baptist Church since 1956. She was a retired school teacher with the Pike County Board of Education for fifty years, having taught 34 years and then was a substitute teacher for 16 years from 1985 to 2001.

Survivors include one brother, Bobby (Cora Sue) Thacker of Bethel, Ohio; sister-in-law, Florene Thacker of Canada, Ky.; niece, Deidra (Greg) Williamson of Canada, Ky.; nephew, Robert (Patty) Thacker of Bethel, Ohio; great nieces, Bethel Renee (Josh) Robinette of Hatfield, Ky. and Heather Nicole (Jason) Kidd of Canada, Ky.; great nephew, Brian Thacker of Bethel, Ohio and great great nieces, Alyssa Faith, Isabella Grace and Rebecca Hope Robinette and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 11 AM at the Mt. Pleasant Old Regular Baptist Church with Old Regular Baptist Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery, Sidney, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Brothers of the Old Regular Baptist Church. Visitation will be held after 6 PM Tuesday and Wednesday at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with special services both nights at 7 PM.

Ethel Kennedy Smith, 82, of McVeigh, KY passed away Tuesday morning, May 3, 2011 at the home of her sister.

She was born December 19, 1928 at McAndrews, Ky. the daughter of the late Dock Burgess and Gusta Collins Kennedy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James W. Smith who died April 28, 2011 and by her son, Michael W. Smith.

Ethel was a homemaker and a member of the McAndrews Church of Christ.

Survivors include her daughter, Lisa Ann Smith of McVeigh, Ky.; brother, Oscar Kennedy of Pinsonfork, Ky.; sister, JoAnn Horn of McVeigh, Ky. and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 6, 2011 at 1 PM at the McAndrews Church of Christ with David Parsley officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. with Ron Hepler, Ronnie Lester, Randy Howell, James Howell, Larry Cains, Anthony Preston, Jason Smith and Gary Scott serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held after 6 PM Wednesday and Thursday at the McAndrews Church of Christ with special services Wednesday night at 7 PM with Joe Cochran officiating and 7 PM Thursday with Dennis Wolford officiating.

Charla Paulette Blair, 53, of Huddy, KY, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at Varney, West Virginia.

She was born August 9, 1957 at Logan, WV the daughter of the late Carson and Leta Blair. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one son, Carson Jones of Huddy, Ky.; daughter, Laura Muncy of Huddy, Ky.; two sisters, Janet Sasser of Nashville, NC, Virginia Cadle of Richmond, Va.; two grandchildren, Gabrielle Muncy and Christopher Jones and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 9, 2011 at 2 PM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Donnie Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in the Estep Family Cemetery, Trace Creek, Ky. Visitation will be held from 10 AM till 2 PM Monday at the Funeral Home.

Carrie Lynn Charles, 33 of Belfry, KY passed away Friday, May 6, 2011 at her home. carrie lynn charles.jpg

She was born February 26, 1978 in Pike County, Ky. the daughter of Penny Lynn Charles Mullins of Rogersville, Tn. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ruby and Smokey Charles and an uncle, Ricky Charles.

She was a homemaker and had attended the Belfry Apostolic Church.

Besides her Mother she is survived by her step father, William Mullins of Rogersville, Tn.; son, Austin Heath Tussey; daughter, Lila Lynn Copley; brother, Gerald Brent Charles of Rogersville, Tn.; sister, Brittany Nicole Charles of Rogersville, Tn.; aunt, Joyce Adkins of Rogersville, Tn. and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 1 PM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roger Egnor officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. with Richard Copley, Tyler Copley, Charles Ward, Shannon Fields, Gerald Charles and William Mullins serving as pallbearers.

Phyllis Jean Smith, 80, of Canada, KY passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at her home.

She was born April 10, 1931 in Pike County, Ky. the daughter of the late Irving Thacker and Goldie Smith Thacker Williamson. Besides her parents she was also preceded in death by one sister, Christine Perry.

She worked for eighteen years at L.B. Atkins Jewelry in Williamson, WV and five years at Taylor's Jewelry at the Southside Mall before opening her own business, Phyllis & Emily's Jewelry, Floral & Gift Boutique in 1986. She retired after ten years of business in 1996. She was a member of Stone Lodge #533 Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, John J. Smith of Canada, Ky.; one son, John Edward (Ann) Smith of Cynthiana, Ky.; one daughter, Patty (Bruce) Moon of Canada, Ky.; two special granddaughters, Jessica (Josh) Martin of Forest Hills, Ky. and Amanda Moon of Canada, Ky.; one grandson, Joseph (Heather) Smith of Cynthiana, Ky.; three great grandchildren, Avery Joseph Smith, Nevada Carlisle and Ava Carlisle of Cynthiana, Ky.; one brother, Dennis Thacker of Covington, Ky.; four sisters, Jacqueline Jude of Melbourne, Fl., Brenda (Max) Newberry of Norman, Ok, Janet (Jim) Trout of Pikeville, Ky. and Betty Gallimore of Canada, Ky.; caregiver of eight years, Francis Morris and her special friend, Emily Krasse.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 11 AM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Lacy Walters and Hobert Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery, Sidney, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held after 6 PM Thursday and Friday at the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with special services both nights at 7 PM.

Gary Douglas Hatfield, 63, of Stone, KY, passed away Monday, May 16, 2011 at his residence.

He was born July 31, 1947 in Pike County, Ky. the son of the late Orison and Garnette Hall Hatfield.

He was a retired employee of the railroad and a veteran of the United States Air Force having served in the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Hensley Hatfield of Stone, Ky.; three sons, Gary Douglas (Angie) Hatfield Jr. of Hardy, Ky., Jon Mark Hatfield of Stone, Ky. and Tim (Barb) Lovern of Canada, Ky.; sisters, Sharion Marks of Highland Park, Indiana and Judy Rawdon of Georgetown, Ky.; one brother, Ronnie Varney of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Molly, Katie and Mindy Hatfield, Kimberly Nicole and Jon Derek Hatfield, Timmy and Amanda Lovern and one great grandchild, Isiah Stanley.

There will not be any visitation or funeral service at this time.

Jack Jarrell, 80 of LaFollette, TN formerly of Mingo and Wayne County, WV passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011 in St. Mary's Hospital, LaFollette, Tn.

He was born October 13, 1931 in Rameytown, WV the son of the late Albert and Dollie Canterbury Jarrell. He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Troy Jarrell, Frank Jarrell, Roy "Buck" Jarrell, Albert "Abby" Jarrell, Kirby Canterbury and Delbert Canterbury and three sisters, Hazel Hardin, Ruth Montgomery and Emogene Columbia.

Jack was a disabled coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America for 30 years. He was a faithful member of the Kermit Masonic Lodge #167 F. & A.M. for 50 years, a member of the Worshipful Grand Lodge of the State of West Virginia and of the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley Ann Urban Jarrell of LaFollette, Tn.; one loving daughter, Patricia "Patty" (Michael) Runyon of LaFollette, Tn.; a grandson, Stephen (April) Runyon of LaFollette, Tn.; two great granddaughters, Caitlin and Cambry Runyon; brother-in-laws: Danny (Hattie) Urban of Columbus, Ohio and Peanut Urban of Beauty, Ky.; sister-in-laws, Ione "Cissy" Urban of Shantilly, Va. who was so very special to him and Julia Hundley of Lenore, WV and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends whom he held dear to his heart.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Thursday, May 19, 2011 in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Jimmy Maynard from Belo, WV officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher, WV with Kermit Lodge # 167 F. & A. M. having Masonic graveside services and serving as pallbearers. He was born May 19, 1939 at Vago, W.V., to the late Billy Clifford and Gladys Edna Dotson Spinks. He is also preceded in death by one son; Ralph Edwin Spinks II, and one brother; Vernon Spinks.

He was a retired road construction foreman and a Christian.

He is survived by his wife; Margaret Spinks, two sons; Dennis Wayne Spinks and Daniel Clifford Spinks, three daughters; Jan-Doreen Spinks Williamson, Kathryn Ann Spinks Grizzell and Jennifer Spinks Billiter; two sisters, Geraldine "Gerri" Ingram and Anna May Paxton; nine grandchildren; Philip Williamson, Lisa Williamson, Kasey Grizzell, Matthew Spinks, Chase Spinks, Samuel Spinks, Kaylee Robinson, James Dalton Billiter and Jesse Billiter and a host of loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Thursday May 19, 2011 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Jerry McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky. Tressie Lovell Phillips, 95, of Williamson, WV, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at the Trinity Healthcare.

She was born June 29, 1915 at Freeburn, Ky. the daughter of the late Alexander Cameron and Dixie Smith Lovell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Med Phillips; seven brothers, Hubert, Howard, Norris, Chester, Clifford, Riland and Estil "Woody" Lovell and three sisters, Eugenia Charles, Irene Harmon and Blanche Hopkins Hatfield.

Tressie was a homemaker and of the Pilgrim Holiness faith.

Her survivors include two sons, Grover "Curt" Phillips of Williamson, WV and Carl Edmond (Joann) Phillips of Jacksonville, Fl.; one sister, Mrs. Harry (Susie) Brown of Norfolk, Va.; five grandchildren, Lora (Parish) Thompson of Charleston, WV, Lisa and Bobby Phillips of Williamson, WV., Carl E. (Shari) Phillips of Jacksonville, Fl. and Cheri (David) Barkley of Tabor City, NC; three great grandchildren, Lauren Phillips Sperry of Huntington, WV, Carlye G. and Daniel Edmond Phillips of Jacksonville, Fl.; one great great grandson, Gunner Nash Sperry of Huntington, WV.; a special niece, Vivian (Lawrence) Stacy of Toler, Ky. and several other nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Frances Mae Edwards, 78, of McCarr, KY passed away Monday, May 23, 2011 at the Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born March 1, 1933 at Varney, WV the daughter of the late Pearlie and Clara Marie Willis Edwards. She was also preceded in death by two great grandchildren and several brothers and sisters.

She was a sales representative for Ibos Dress Shop, Matewan, WV and a member of the United Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Edwards, Jr. of McCarr, Ky.; children, Linda (James) Staggs of Louisa, Ky., Brenda (Walter) Barker of Red Jacket, WV, Judy (Chuck) Hilbert of Sevierville, Tn., Roger (Dinah) Edwards of McCarr, Ky., Rita Akers of McCarr, Ky. and Ronnie (Tina) Edwards of McCarr, Ky.; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; caretaker, Myrtle Slone Hager of McCarr, Ky. and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Friday, May 27, 2011 in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Roger Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

Millard Clay (Mitty) Thornhill, 62, of Hatfield, KY, died Thursday May 19, 2011 at his residence.

Born December 29, 1948 in Mingo County, West Virginia, he was son of the late Clyde and Anna Mae (Roberts) Thornhill. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Nathan Roy and Kenneth Ray Thornhill.

He was a Mechanic and of the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by one son, James Curtis (Rocky) Thornhill of Matewan, West Virginia; one brother, Charles Edward Thornhill of Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister, Norma Lea (Robert ) McCoy of Man, West Virginia; Nieces, Tammy (Darrell) Manns of Charleston, West Virginia, Robin Dunn of Dayton, Ohio and Doris Ann Thornhill Codling of Cincinnati, Ohio; Nephew, Mark Wayne Taylor of Cincinnati, Ohio and a host of other family and friends.

Memorial Services will be held 1 P.M. Saturday, May 29, 2011 at the Rogers Funeral Home Chapel . Friends and Family may visit from 12 noon till 1 P.M.
James Gary "Hank or Bocephus" Hager, 50 of Ragland, WV passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at the Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born May 24, 1961 at South Williamson, Ky. the son of Josephine Fields Hager of McCarr, Ky. and the late James H. Hager. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert H. Hager and his Mother-in-law, Edna Slone.

He was a disabled coal miner and a member of the Church of God.

Besides his Mother, he is survived by a son, James Gary Hager Jr. of Belfry, Ky.; a daughter, Kashina Hager of McCarr, Ky.; a brother, Brian Hager (Carrie) of Ransom, Ky.; five sisters, Helen M. (Darrell) Baker of McCarr, Ky., Sandra (Robert) Gooslin of Red Jacket, WV, Cassandra Hager of Ransom, Ky., Patsy (Ervin) Workman of Belfry, Ky., Laura Hager of McCarr, Ky. and Lisa (Rodger) Workman of Hardy, Ky.; six grandchildren, Brooklyn Paige Hager, Rhiannon Hager, Katelyn Hager, Harold Hager, Destiny Childress and Megan Hager and the Mother of his children, Myrtle Slone Hager of McCarr, Ky.

Fred Forrest Williams, 68, of Ransom, KY, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2011 at the Pikeville Medical Center.freddie1.jpg

He was born September 12, 1942 in Pike County, Ky. the son of the late Fred and Ruby Fern Blackburn Williams.


Fred was a retired coal miner having been a truck driver for Kirk Trucking. He was a veteran of the US Army and a member of the Belfry Freewill Baptist Church.


Survivors include his wife, Jean M. Williams of Ransom, Ky.; children, Freddie (Robin) Williams and Rodney (Rhonda) Williams all of McAndrews, Ky., Michelle (Rodney) Nunley of Chattaroy, WV, Gina (Jonah) Hatfield of Blackberry, Ky. and Michale Sean Williams of Charleston, WV; sisters, Phyllis (Larry) Stanley of Fincastle, Va., Barbara (Roger) Blackburn, Gloria (Paul) Sedmack and June (Charles) Leedy all of McAndrews, Ky., Betty Bishop of Madison, Al. and Judy (James) Ramey of Tampa, Fl.; grandchildren, Kristyn Williams, Michale Ray, Kamron Williams, Jonah Hatfield, Ethan Williams, Josh Hatfield, Hailei Nunley, Mica Williams, Gia Hatfield, Joseph Hatfield and Elijah Williams; great grandchild, Maleah and a host of other family and friends.

Charles Curtis "Cornshuck" Smith, 81, of Sidney, KY, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 4:58 PM. According to his wishes, he died at his home on Dix Fork surrounded by his loving family.charles curtis smith.jpg
He was born September 23, 1929 in Pike County, KY, the son of the late Omer and Fanny May Smith. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Minnie Lucille Pinson Smith, two sisters and one brother.
He is survived by his three children; Bonnie (Dennis) Blackburn of Sidney, Ky., Charles (Susan) Smith of Georgetown, Ky. and Tammie (Randall) West of Canada, Ky.; four grandchildren; Suzanne (Justin) Zumwalt of Georgetown, Ky., Amber (Matt) Goble of Prestonsburg, Ky., Jessica Smith of Georgetown, Ky. and Jacob (Miranda) West of Canada, Ky.; two great grandchildren, Taylor and Brody Zumwalt of Georgetown, Ky.; two brothers, Onis Smith of Canada, Ky. and Herbert Smith of Ypsilanti, Mi.; two sisters, Fonnie Kincaid and Mary Jane Smith both of Raceland, Ky.; Special friends who aided the family in his care were Lacy Walters, Daniel Stanley, Steve Mullins, Walter Bogar and his brother, Onis Smith. Special niece, Vicki Hatfield provided nursing care on the day of his death.
He was a faithful member of the Dix Fork Old Regular Baptist Church for 46 years, having joined with their congregation in July 1963. He was a retired coal miner and also an avid hunter, gardener and outdoorsman prior to the decline of his health.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at the Dix Fork Old Regular Baptist Church with his dear friend, Lacy Walters officiating. Other ministers will include David Crigger, Edward Lee Smith and Ivan Neal Thornsbury. Burial will follow in the Varney Cemetery, Dix Fork with Steve Mullins,Walter Bogar, Bruce Williamson, Tony Williamson, Ron Gannon,Wayne Blackburn, Daniel Stanley and Charles Edwards serving as pallbearers.

She was born on August 23, 1988 at Logan, WV to Ralph Caraway and Myrtle Thompson Caraway.

Kelly is preceded in death by a sister, Jessica Juanita Caraway, maternal grandparents, John and Zola Thompson, paternal grandparents, Roy and Juanita Caraway and cousins, William Henry Blankenship and Sydney Dudley.

In addition to her parents, Kelly is survived by a sister, Ellen (Richie) O'Brien, nephew, Seth O'Brien, niece, Jessa O'Brien, fiancee, Jeremiah 'Jay' Walls, Step mother Barbara Caraway, Aunts: Janice Canterbury, Sandra Blankenship, Mary Thompson, Martha Thompson, Ethel (Chester) White, Grace Thompson, Clara (Troy) Bevins, Zella (Leslie) Hall, Wanda (Jeff) Mayer, Joyce (Shawn) Haubrich, Geraldine (Mike) Roberts and Kay Caraway. Funeral services will be on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 1:00 pm in the afternoon with Delbert Mccoy, John Victor Mccoy and Rex Sammons officiating. Burial will follow at the Thompson-Moore Cemetery, Burnwell, Ky .

Patricia Ann Stepp Spears, 47, of McVeigh, KY passed away Saturday, June 4, 2011 at her residence.

She was born January 7, 1964 at Williamson, WV the daughter of the late Carles Bob Stepp and Rebecca Ann York. She was also preceded in death by her step mother, Christine Stepp, two sisters, Bonnie Whitmire and Bertha Hampton and one brother, Jerry Hampton.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Octavia Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her loving husband, Ronald Edward Spears of McVeigh, Ky.; children, Rebecca Anderson of the home, Leslie Anderson of Johns Creek, Ky. and Robert Frederick Anderson of Cincinnati, Ohio; granddaughter she was raising, Haley Elizabeth Anderson of the home; one brother, Robert (Karen) Stepp of Nolan,WV; five other grandchildren and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, June 7, 2011 in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry O'Brien officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held after 6 PM Sunday and Monday at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with special services both nights at 7 PM.

Mark Anthony Alexander, 51, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, died Monday, June 6, 2011 in the Pinacle Health Care., Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
