ODYSSEY ESSAY OUTLINE PACKET

Engelbert English 9
TOPIC: Is Odysseus in control of his own fate or are the Gods in charge of his fate?
TASK: Choose a point-of-view from the “or” statement above, and support your point of view with evidence from the text.
THESIS: You will choose one of the following statements:

In Homer’s The Odyssey, the title character is in charge of his own fate. The decisions he makes shape his destiny.

In Homer’s The Odyssey, the gods control Odysseus’ fate. It is their decisions that create and fulfill his destiny.

LEAD-IN: Remember: this is your attention getter to pull the reader in. There are several types of lead-in you can use: questions, quotes, anecdotes, etc. When in doubt, use what is known as the funnel lead-in where you begin discussing the topic of destiny in a broad sense and then focus into your specific point-of-view. The lead-in can be anywhere from two to four sentences.

EXAMPLE LEAD-IN (quote):

Famed Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling once said, “Destiny is a name often given in retrospect to choices that had dramatic consequences.” Even today, we pass off life events as a loosely woven tapestry from the threads of time of things that were simply meant-to-be, after-the-fact. The timeless debate over choosing your own destiny vs. your destiny being written in stars goes back as far as 720 B.C., the chronicled year of one of the oldest epics in the western hemisphere. While the debate today weighs heavily in favor of man controlling his fate, in the world of the ancient Greeks, man lived at the mercy of the Gods.
