Experiment Snell’s Law

Problem:

1. To determine the index of refraction in the unknown medium.

2. To determine the speed of light in the unknown medium.

3. To identify what material is the unknown medium.

4. To verify Snell’s Law

Hypothesis:

The angle of refraction would be directly proportional to the angle of incidence according to the Snell’s Law.

Materials:

Laser level, protractor, plate glass, plain paper, pencil, data sheet

Procedures:

1. Use the protractor to draw a normal

2. Turn the laser on and measure the angles written in the table.

3. Take down values for the refracted rays and the normal

4. Complete the table and values.

5. Write out the qualitative data as need be.

Computation:

Average = (2.43 + 2.38 2.56 + 2.33 + 2.42)/5 = 2.40

Vx = Va/n = 3*10^8)/2.4 = 1.24 x 10^8 m/s

Average for material 2: (1.42 + 1.43 + 1.42 + 1.40 + 1.38)/5= 1.41

Velocity for material 2 = Vx = Va/n = (3*10^8)/1.41 = 2.13

Conclusion:

The Snell’s law is was verified to be true. The slopes collected from the graphs of each medium helped come to this conclusion.
