Passage 1:

Abraham Lincoln was president of the United States. He was born in Kentucky in 1809. He lived in a log cabin. When Lincoln was young, he loved to read. When Lincoln was alive, some people were slaves. Slaves could not choose how they lived. Lincoln spoke against slavery. He said all people should be free. Lincoln became president in 1861. Many people in the South were upset. They did not agree with Lincoln’s beliefs. Southern states separated from the United States. This led to the Civil War. People in the northern states fought with people in the southern states. Lincoln was a good leader in war. The war ended in 1865. The northern states won the war. Slaves became free. Some people did not agree with Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth did not agree with Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln. The shooting of a leader is called an assassination. Lincoln died the next morning. Lincoln was one of our greatest leaders. He stood up for his beliefs.



Passage 2:

When Abraham Lincoln became president there were more than three million black slaves in the southern states. Voters in the South were not happy to have a president who hated slavery. Soon after Abraham Lincoln was elected president eleven southern states withdrew from the United States. They formed their own government, the Confederate States of America. In April 12, 1861 Confederate soldiers fired on Fort Sumter, a United States fort in South Carolina. The war between the North and the South, the Civil War, began. Abraham Lincoln led the war to keep the country united. During the war Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation. It declared that all slaves in the Confederate states were free.
