Experience:

M.S. Architectural Engineering ThesisUniv. of Miami, Coral Gables FL (2000/08 – 2003/12)

Topic is on “green” or sustainable design for South Florida residential housing to determine environmentally friendly and cost-effective building materials by calculating environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costs (LCC) for residential building products of site-cast concrete walls and slab on grade, thermal insulation, roof and floor covering, driveway paving, & framing.

Teacher’s AssistantUniv. of Miami, Coral Gables FL (2001/01 – 2003/12)

Tutored, graded papers & proctored exams in various engineering courses w/ tuition waiver for each semester.

Reinforced Masonry Design Project – Univ. of Miami, Coral Gables FL (2001/08 – 2001/12)

For a 4-story South Florida hotel, calculated the gravity loads & wind loads according to ASCE 7-93, and designed the following: lateral load distribution to shear walls; exterior wall for out of plane flexure; shear wall for in-plane flexure, shear & axial loading; floor diaphragm to wall connection; reinforced masonry beams; columns for a canopy; and retaining wall.

Foundation Engineering ProjectUniv. of Miami, Coral Gables FL (2001/01 – 2001/05)

For a framed reinforced concrete building in Brazil, participated in a shallow foundation design using the American Concrete Institute (ACI) code. Calculated differential settlement after construction; determined size & reinforcement for columns, and amount of reinforcement required for shrinkage & temperature; designed steel reinforcement resisting bending, and column-footing joint for columns & footings; and drawn a scaled layout of footings showing reinforcement using AutoCAD 2000.

Advanced Design of Steel Structures ProjectUniv. of Miami, Coral Gables FL (2000/08 – 2000/12)

For a multi-floored structure, designed gravity & wind loads according to ASCE 7-93, flexural members & columns for bracing & local buckling, torsion, steel-concrete composite members; braced & rigid frames; and structural connections.

Senior Design Project Univ. of Miami, Coral Gables FL (1999/08 – 2000/05)

For a multi-story apartment in Miami, FL, designed the ventilation & air conditioning w/ AutoCAD 2000, calculated cooling load of the building; performed cost estimation of materials & labor, worked on the time schedule w/ Microsoft Project & finished w/ a presentation of the final design.

Architectural Design II ProjectsUniv. of Miami, Coral Gables FL (1998/08 – 1998/12)

Architecturally designed & drafted a pedestrian bridge adjacent to an existing bridge & park from a plot of land located in Coral Gables, FL; and a manatee hospital & halfway house for the Miami Seaquarium. Both included floor & site plans, cross sections, & presentation.
