Report of the ad hoc USPS Environmental Committee
P/R/C Jean Hamilton, SN, reported that the objectives of the ad hoc USPS Environmental Committee are to educate members and to publicize efforts internally and externally. She reported that the committee’s slogan is “The Environment — USPS is in it!” The committee has also designed a poster that is available on the committee’s website at www.usps.org/national/envcom. P/R/C Hamilton reported that committee will focus on four projects in 2005:

  • a collaborative project with the Educational Department to create a mariner’s environment learning guide;

  • an initiative titled “Unsplash that Trash!” that encourages members to collect a bag of maritime litter each time they boat;

  • create a brochure on the best practices for environmental responsibility; and

  • establish partnerships with the USCG Sea Partners Campaign and other similar efforts.

Report of the National Safe Boating Council
P/R/C Joyce F. Shaw, AP, reported that the National Safe Boating Council serves as a forum for the advancement of safe and enjoyable recreational boating and fosters the common interests of those who seek the goal of safer boating through education.
P/R/C Shaw reported that the local Recreational Boating Safety Grant Program, which is funded by a grant from the Wallop-Breaux Aquatic Resources Trust Fund, is now it its fifth year. She reported that RBS grants of up to $1,000 each are awarded annually to assist in implementing worthwhile projects that promote creative ways to enhance safe boating. She reminded members that all districts and squadrons are eligible to apply for these small grants.
She reported that the NSBC sponsors two annual awards. One is the Boating Education Advancement Award, which recognizes programs that enhance the image and recognition of boating safety efforts. The second award is the West Marine Boating Safety Youth Program Award, which recognizes individuals and organizations that have developed and successfully implemented safe boating programs.
P/R/C Shaw reminded members to visit the NSBC website at www.safeboatingcouncil.org for further information.

C/C Johnson called on P/R/C Marilyn Rose, AP, and R/C Frank Clayton, SN, to present the USPS Squadron Development Award to the three districts that chartered squadrons in 2005: Districts 5, 19 and 25.

Chaplain Gail S. Nachman, SN, delivered the benediction and P/R/C Ken Link, JN, sang God Bless America prior to the color guard retiring the colors. C/C Johnson adjourned the meeting at 1610.
