The Spiritualistic Philosophy consists of two essential parts, like a Book of Wisdom with two main chapters. The first chapter deals with the daily life on earth, with its practices and experiences, with arrangements for every-day life — plans for the future, of suffering, care and trouble — for the well- being of the human body — of livelihood and happiness. The second chapter deals with the origin — the life and conduct — the mission on earth — and the destination of the spirit "Spiritualism" meaning contact between spirits and human beings, between reincarnated and discarnated spirits. Many people, even some church-leaders, believe and teach that the spirit of the dead is asleep, only to awake on the last day of Judgement, and then to manifest in the same living body which it formerly occupied — like a kind of reincarnation. But these same people also insist that people on earth are able to have contact with infernal spirits, although they do not mention whether these infernal spirits have ever lived in a human body or not. People are told — in order to give these false doctrines a semblance of truth — that there are angels and there are devils — one lives in Heaven, the other in Hell. Thus a new false doctrine is maintained to verify the first false doctrine. There was a time when people did not know anything of facts before the birth, nor what would happen after the death of the human body. The 19th century is the time — after the time of the Inquisition, during which all contacts with spirits through clairvoyance, clairaudience, Psychometry etc., were punished by burning on the stake — however, all over the earth the invisible world gives proof of contacts between the invisible spirits in the cosmos with those who are reincarnated on earth — by table-tapping, incorporation and such-like. And in the 20th century there are many manifestations from the spiritworld, many explanations through mediums about life in the cosmos, that nobody, whether he believes in science or in the church, can maintain that there is no life in the invisible world. The average person wants material demonstrations, which he is able to see or to feel with his hands. He wants to see "apports", flowers and other things come from nowhere, brought from invisible sources. He wants to hear from mediums something about his health, his future, hear of relatives or friends who have passed over and — best of all — his future on earth as a human being — his health, journeys, romance etc. Their train of thought is of the earth, material; they want only physical, even sensual satisfaction. Many people regard contact with the spiritworld as a means of getting rich at gaming-tables or by betting. People of this type experience the first episode of spiritualistic philosophy: they aim at fulfillment of material wishes. This is understandable when one deals with young people, full of zest for life and ideals, who want to build up their lives with so many opportunities in front of them. They have the chance to accomplish their destined mission: to make somebody happy by a happy marriage — to bring up children and advise them to choose the right path, give them a good education enabling them to earn their livelihood, etc. The life-force is a force of nature which calls them and they cannot refrain, but listen to this call because it is a condition which belongs to the realm of earth and of the human being. The experiences of their lives on earth leads them to seek for the life in the spiritworld. The craving to realise worldly ideals passes away. Material gains have been reached and have collapsed; there was success and there was disaster. There was happiness in realization of ideals and unhappiness and misery in failure. This is the crossing from the first part of the book of his life to the second part. Now begins the second, the spiritual part of life; the constructive part of gaining wisdom. Experience meanwhile has taught him much. He has had many cares and difficulties and is not spared either trouble or suffering. He is now mature and able to receive the teachings from the invisible spiritworld — the cause and effect of his life on earth as spirit — the cause of all his care, struggle and suffering he had to undergo during his life as human being -— about the Laws of Creation, of Karma — of cleansing and perfection — of evolution — of birth, life, death and reincarnation — of eternal life in the Light of the Wisdom of God. Thus he gained the conviction that these initiations did not arise from the underworld, but hailed from Higher Spheres, from Planets of Light and Wisdom. Yes, there are manifestations which arise from the underworld, but then he is able to distinguish that this is nothing abnormal, only that some low spirit tried to lead him on a false track. He is prepared for such happenings and able to distinguish between good and evil vice and virtue — hate and love — revenge and forgiveness — egoism and altruism — disloyalty and loyalty — atheism and belief — primitively and evolution — perdition or salvation, etc. Those who were formerly indifferent towards the prophets, now try to find comfort and strength by studying their lives; those who were indifferent towards belief, now start to analyze their own religious belief and draw from it their philosophy. Those who have rejected other creeds now start to study and gain conviction that all creeds result from the same spiritual source, that there is perhaps just a difference in perception about the true meaning of a word or a sentence in the Holy Books. Those, who formerly called themselves atheists, now begin to be interested in the Essence of the Deity and try to get evidence. Those, who enjoyed life on earth, were fond of material things, who only lived for luxury and possessions, now become mystics with a firm conviction — ignorant of their past condition they evolved to live as a prophet. to serve "God's Plans" on earth. Then they behold their adherents and are astonished that there are only a few able to understand and follow them. They do not understand why the world is so backwards — they forget that the days are not so far off when they themselves were unable to understand what they now proclaim as Divine Truth. And they realise that many people have studied the principles which are proclaimed, but that these live quietly in seclusion and meditation — and follow the same path upwards which they themselves are following. They also experience that some of their followers leave and start to do their own spiritual work. They might feel lonely and forsaken but are reassured when others come who desire to learn and to have a part of the veil lifted from the unknown and invisible world. They might, in such moments of loneliness, be overwhelmed by a strong feeling of mysticism and they open their hearts to God, with Whom they are, at such a moment, speaking. They talk to Him more candidly than they ever talked to their father on earth. They feel God is not the father on earth to whom they did not always tell everything, to whom they were not able to confess their innermost, which was important to them — with whom they just discussed necessary worldly affairs. God is their spiritual Father with Whom to contemplate spiritual concerns. They tell Him of their amazement that only a few understand them and want to follow the same path, which they themselves pursue, following their inner conviction — that there are so many people who come and leave who perhaps have received the good seeds, but would develop them only later. They will realise during these meditations that nothing can happen before the proper time — that each little seed which is cast to its soil will germinate in its own right time; become a plant, produce flowers and fruit — that even the human spirit is confided to the earth as an Atom of Life and is able, only after a long, long process of evolution, to free itself from this earth and to develop into an evolved spirit which is then able to proceed to the Light of Wisdom, which radiates from God, and to which it ultimately is received — a life force, which after leaving this source, is now returning as a perfected evolved spirit. They now belong to the group of Mystics — not to those who think that prayer and repentance alone are proof of mysticism — but to that category of mystics who show their fellow-beings by dispensing of love and compassion the path to cleansing and evolution. Those who spend their days by murmuring prayers, which their hearts do not feel, are not genuine mystics. They are still looking for Light and they think that prayer suffices to realise their material wishes. A prayer sent up for the spiritual welfare of fellow-beings is very powerful and has a far wider radiation than that which is just muttered with the lips, trying to obtain material advantages. Genuine mystics pray for those on earth who are unfortunate — pray to help them to bear their cross patiently, to relieve their suffering — pray for those who are still low and undeveloped to develop their spiritual outlook and cast off their vices, to acquire virtues instead — that love will blossom up in them for their companions and compassion for those who need help and comfort and forgiveness. Love must not be feigned, but must well-up impulsively and reach chiefly those who are worthy of it. Love must be linked with the Love of God for those of his children who search for Light and Wisdom. You will now comprehend that this life on earth is a book which each one has to compile for himself, individually. The first part is the realization of material matters — the second part is that of spiritual concerns. The whole is the Path of Purification and Evolution which blossoms out to Mysticism in the true meaning of this word: Service for God — co-operation with spirits from the cosmos to help to realise Plans from the Highest Throne. The most important of "God's Plans" is to show His Children on earth the Path to the House of their Father — to lead them to Eternal Bliss — and thus to contribute to the spiritual ascent of all.
Science tries to investigate the process of development of the human body, heredity and transmission of infirmities, diseases, colour of the hair, natural inclinations, characteristic traits, habits etc., and looks for all these above mentioned points in the physical inheritance of the body. It is a fact that certain physical features can be hereditary and be transmitted by parents to children, often through several generations and that the reason for this is a biological one. There are parasites and microbes which exist in the human blood, but do not give rise to severe illness. The children might inherit this affliction, but likewise with little physical disturbance. A few specks on the body; a certain way of hair growth or colour may be recorded from generation to generation. Much specific work is done in this respect and science gives to many such occurrences an incontestable explanation. But these facts are natural phenomena — they belong to the domain which can be seen with human eyes and felt by human hands. Science — according to fundamental rules — accepts only physical facts and is on the right course where it handles the maxims of human heredity. But between science and scientist is some disagreement concerning the acceptance of certain theories. The generally accepted basis for research is to take nothing for granted which cannot be demonstrated visually or confirmed by touching. But this theory is surpassed by scientific experience. Science realised the fact about electrical propelling-power, heat and light. Science introduced the radio, wireless telegraphy and several other invisible occurrences. Concerning electricity — science is unable to prove its origin. Science has to acknowledge this and the results of it without being able to give any acceptable explanation. The effect is there — can be felt when heat develops, but nobody is able to see whether a battery or wire be charged with electricity or not. Wireless developed and science had to admit that sound like speech or music can be transmitted without conduction over great distances, whilst the original tunes are kept intact. Science was thus forced to accept the findings that all around the earth the cosmos is filled with rays, which move in every direction, but are independent and do not interfere with or disturb any other rays, and by which medium sounds and even pictures can be sent to far distances where people can hear or see them. Some scientists started on the assumption that if people are able to converse at short distances, it must be possible to converse over long distances — and if this were possible, it must also be possible to send pictures over long distances. Science has, after all, to accept many things which are not seen by the human eyes, nor felt by human touch. Thus: there s a diversity between science and scientists about the concern of the basic laws of science. This results from the spiritual evolution of the scientist. When science accepts the theory of heredity, the acceptance is based on physical viewpoints, but they try in vain to maintain this theory in regard to character, inclinations, sympathy and antipathy etc., to be possibly inherited from ancestors and passed to descendants. Even in brothers and sisters are found differences in temperament of such a kind that the physical body also shows these differences. One child may be indolent and indifferent and its physical body coarser than that of its brothers and sisters, who are intelligent sharp and active and their bodies are slender and refined. One child may be interested in sport and bodily exercises, whilst the brothers and sisters are far more interested in art or science. The body will show — in both cases — the radiation of their spiritual inclinations. It says: "spiritual inclinations", and this is of great importance which will be explained by the word "evolution". Science accepts the expression: "intellectual inclinations". But many scientists experienced that "intellectual inclinations" are cultivated by school education, but that "spiritual inclinations" are not formed by schooling, but are inborn qualities which permit to use the word "evolution". One can put many scientists — by their education, their intellectual development and their certificates and training — on the same rung of the social ladder. It is a great truth that the character of each person and also the consideration for material or spiritual values shows physically in each of them. What can be deducted from this? 1. that the human being — in his physical body — is subject to (a) inheritance from ancestors, (b) depicting the virtues and vices present in the spirit within him. 2. that his physical inheritance from ancestors is of earthly material and transient validity. 3. that his spiritual conditions: his character, his talents, his instincts, his inclinations, his good and his evil belong to the cosmos, to the spirit, and not to the earth and the physical body, and that from this condition the rung of evolution has to be determined, which his spirit has reached. What actually is now evolution? Does evolution belong to the physical body or to the spirit? Science searches for the determination of evolution to the physical body. The spirit cannot be seen with normal human eyes and no human hands are able — under normal conditions — to feel it. There- fore science rejects the theory of a spirit which lives in the human body. But scientists have their own individual degree of evolution. Among them are those who study experimentally paranormal appearances and have, by their experiences, become convinced that in every human body lives a spirit — in every animal lives a certain entity, which is as yet not a spirit — in each plant is proof of life, a kind of life-force — and also in the minerals, which originate in the earth and develop from there, is a spark of life present. Everything on earth is alive, even the grains of sand in the dust, which — through certain influences — are able to develop into minerals. He experiences the process of development of the grains of sand, of the minerals, the plants, the animals, up to the human beings. But of what does this process of development consist? All is evolution: from the spark of life in the minerals to the spirit in the human body. Evolution has no significance in the material world, but well in the cosmic world. The physical is the mirror of the spiritual picture of all that is alive. Is it not mentioned in your Holy Book that God created the human being from the dust, from physical matter, but that He made him in His likeness? God is Spirit — God is invisible because He belongs to the Cosmos. The human spirit is also invisible and it belongs likewise to the cosmos. The Lord made the human spirit develop like a seed .planted in the soil to quicken, and He has given this seed an atom of life with a yearning for evolution. This spark develops in the mineral world until its process of evolution there is completed. Then in the world of plants is a higher vital function. There is a life-force which develops in its process of evolution from the most common weeds, which the gardener discards, to the beautiful roses and orchids. This life-force has reached a still higher form in the world of animals and develops from the lowest creeping animals to the gentle domestic ones. Each and everyone has to struggle for its existence and experiences its half-spiritual cycle along graminivorous and carnivorous animals to the tame domestic ones. The human being harbours a spirit, an entity, gifted with reason, but has to be trained to become a sensitive entity and must find its way to purification and redemption through discarding the evil and vices in his character — and through acquisition of gifts and virtues. There lies the process of evolution of the human spirit, which is wrongly called: process of evolution of the physical human being. No! The physical human being does not evolve in the true meaning of this word. The evolution, which the physical body undergoes, is the mirror of the evolution of the spirit. The body is temporary and returns to the soil from whence it came. The spirit undergoes its process of evolution through many bodies — and in each body in which it reincarnates has indeed some physical mark, some characteristic from one or another of its ancestors — but evolution belongs to the spirit which makes its imprint on the body. Evolution is purification — a state of deliverance from evil, which still clings to the spirit, but nothing happens to the state of the body. Therefore: work for the evolution of your spirit. Keep your body clean, but essentially: cleanse your spirit. Try to repair a wrong done to your neighbour when you recall it, and repent, as long as there is still time. Alter the failing or imperfection in your character, or in your conduct and behavior, through developing spiritual love for your fellow-beings — through helpfulness towards those who value it, and by forgiving those who wronged you. You work thus for your spiritual evolution — shorten the road to Eternal Life and Bliss—and gain the Grace of God.
There are many problems in life which are rather difficult to solve — one gets undecided and dubious. How to decide? Yes, or no, is easily said, but doubt remains — it is hard to come to a decision. A hasty decision often results in misery, in suffering and regret. Life becomes embittered for the time being, and this state of affairs might even have an unfavorable influence all during life on earth. The remembrance of such a life is taken along into spirit-life after the death of the body. This remembrance makes the spirit feel unhappy in the cosmos also and a good spirit will ask for a quick reincarnation to forget the past. Somebody in doubt about a decision will usually get an inspiration to desist from the matter in question. But the human being is a duality: the spirit says "No" because it feels the unfavorable results, but the human brain says "Yes" because of possible material advantages and enjoyments it might have in store. Earthly pleasures are of short duration. They are like the taste of a tart fruit, which has a nice attractive look. But the appearance is delusory — truth and reality are only within. Material profits are not permanent. Many people have made a fortune, in one or other honest or dishonest way — they now live in the lap of luxury. And then — some wrong calculations — and the material riches are gone. Earthly possessions are quickly lost, seemingly without avail, on account of a difference in the family, difficulties with debts and obligations, difficulties with the children, theft or fire — and all the amassed riches just vanish into thin air. How acrid is now the taste of this fruit: "remembrance of material possessions"! It was only a short dream, but much confusion and plenty of disturbances were the result. How often are people, who never possessed any riches themselves, inclined to say: "Nothing can take away the good time of luxury, if even for a short while only, but they have enjoyed it". That might be true — but come to think of it: after some time this remembrance of possessions and luxury (tainted as it were by the acrid aftertaste, by regretting a thoughtless action, by theft, rebellion or whatever else, which put an end to this life of luxury), will fade away and one does not feel the necessity any more to fight for an easy life of luxury and to repeat those former silly actions. Those who are living in luxury are, day in and day out, burdened with the weight of all their material gains. They have no time for anything else but shares and dividends and the compulsion to increase their fortune. All day long they have to check up how and where to increase, or to sell or to buy. They speculate with national and international conditions and events or circumstances, and they watch world developments and complications for profit or loss of their fortunes. They have to keep up their households and their domestic affairs and pay their staff with promises. In their own business undertakings they have to keep wages down as much as possible — so as to bring their profit as high as possible. Nevertheless, they are envied for those material riches — people grudge them their good fortune and feel jealous and spiteful because they themselves are less fortunate. What makes a person perform silly and stupid actions? Let us consider marriage: In most cases people consider marriage to be a worldly affair — whereas in fact it is of spiritual moment. Before spirits reincarnate in a human body on earth, they determine — in counsel with their leader spirit — what kind of life to choose, whether or not to marry, whom to marry, what type of work or mission to fulfil, etc. But once reincarnated, they have lost every memory of those resolutions determined in the cosmos. During their life on earth they are under the influence of their leader spirit. Proportional to their degree of evolution they will obey the voice of their conscience which talks to them and advises them. This "small voice" is actually the voice of their own spirit or the voice of their leader spirit. As long as the reincarnated spirit is still on a low rung on the ladder of evolution, it will not pay much attention to this "small voice" but is more interested than a spirit with higher evolution would be in the calling of life, the calling of the earth, which urges it to extravagant physical enjoyments. It is not evil to follow the calling of physical life", but it is very wrong not to listen to the small voice within which instigates a person to keep the balance between the physical and the spiritual life on earth. When considering marriage, most people listen more to the call of the world than follow the call of the spirit. The human mind examines the material and financial possibilities for the building of a household and a family, it especially examines whether these two are well matched, but it does not sufficiently consider whether their spirits belong together. According to the theory of the Greek philosophers of old, everything consists of atoms and cells which, by the influence of their positive or negative radiation, either attract or repel each other. In the same way positive orientated persons repel other positive ones, but attract the negative orientated and vice versa. But the greed for riches and comfort ever so often resorts to the earth, which urges it to extravagant physical enjoyments. It is not matching of two positive orientated persons or else two negative ones, and those two just do not belong to each other in marriage. To know whether two people attract one another, one should neither consider their beauty nor their way of dressing, nor should one consider their social standing, but only the spirit which dwells in this human body: its character, its view of life, taste, feelings, wishes, its endeavor and its spiritual radiation — thus is there the possibility that two spirits, which had made their mutual resolution in the cosmos, have found one another to fulfil on earth the mission on which they resolved to in the spiritworld. If two people, who meet on earth, have only the slightest feeling of hesitation, it is better for them to separate. Only when the feeling of belonging together is without the slightest doubt present in both of them it is the influence, the moving force from the cosmos which brings them together. Then they are able to realise the purpose of their reincarnations. They will get help from the cosmos sphere to reach their ultimate aim — and when they leave their physical bodies, their spirits will, more happy than ever before, rise into the cosmos. But if they listen to the call from the earth, with its unlimited possibilities of gaining a fortune and of entertainment, if they slight the "small voice from within", they will not acquire more happiness in the cosmos. Very soon they will ask for a new incarnation to try for a better result of their life on earth, and this new life preferably with simple people who are poor but have a heart of gold founded on love and compassion. There are other errors besides marriage which a person might make in his line of conduct towards his fellow-beings. His impulse to work his way up in the social order is a normal feeling. Only the ways by which he accomplishes it are not always the normal ones, because there are people who look at it as a kind of sport, best comparable with the times of the robber-knights, where those knights clad in steel armor on horseback, tried to knock each other down. In the times of these knights, this habit was looked upon as sport or as honorable fighting, but in our century of civilization and refinement such kind of sport is only practiced figuratively, without a horse and without shield and lance. In such a way some subordinate might try to dispose of his superior and to put himself into the latter's place, for the only reason to earn a few pounds more. A merchant takes his chance to ruin his competitor. Some people try to lure a good servant away from his master to hire him for themselves. There are people who will destroy the good marriage of a friend to find for themselves more pleasures and more delight in life. There are merchants, directors and financiers who exploit their staff shamelessly, and dismiss them without any pity when they are no longer competent. It is not only that they damage their fellow-beings physically, but they damage them also spiritually and it is the greater evil, which they commit, to cause these fellow-beings mental suffering. Such people are of so low an evolution that no doubt enters their mind as to whether they have hurt or damaged somebody. They are hardened to evil and it will take them a long time until they have changed their heart and opened it to the Light of Wisdom, which will make them change their methods — and perhaps this time may never come! For everything, which you undertake in life, consider: 1. Is there a doubt in you, or a clear yes or no. 2. If your mind says yes, find out whether this yes is in accordance with your conscience and with the small voice within which you can counsel, always and everywhere. 3. If you have a strong urge to do something, try to find out whether this urge springs from the human being or from the spirit. 4. Always act only after good consideration, and not yielding to the influence or feelings or cravings for material possessions or physical satisfaction. 5. Always ask your conscience and act accordingly and you shall enjoy the happiness of life on earth and take such happiness with you into the spiritworld. If you act thus, you will often in thankfulness look towards heaven for the information you receive from above, and you will become more and more convinced that not only the small voice within talks to you but that Your Father Divine is Himself within you too and that He guides your steps and shows you the Light, which shines from the House of the Father, where Eternal Bliss is waiting for you.
