Great Expectations Literary Scrapbook

Directions

You will be creating your own “literary scrapbook” based on one of the main characters in Great Expectations. You can choose from Pip, Estella, Miss Havisham, Joe, Biddy or Magwitch (or another character you approve with me beforehand).



Requirements: Your completed scrapbooks will need to include the following:

  • Scrapbook cover with illustrations

  • A character fact sheet

  • Three journal entries from the point of view of your chosen character

  • A letter from your character to another character in the novel (i.e. Pip to Joe)

  • The response letter from the other character to your character (i.e. Joe’s response to Pip)

  • A newspaper article featuring something that happens to you character in the novel

  • Souvenirs and Mementos with complete explanations of each object

  • A personal reflection on how your character’s actions and personality reflect the novel’s enduring question of social status and prestige

  • Back cover

Presenting

After you have completed your scrapbooks you will get into groups of four or five students to present your scrapbooks to your classmates. Each group member will be required to evaluate the others on a sheet that I will provide for your evaluation.

I will make specific due dates for each component and also for the final due date for the scrapbook and its presentation.



Literary Scrapbook Scoring

Components

  • A character fact sheet 15 pts.

  • Three journal entries from the point of view of your character 30 pts.

  • A letter from your character to another character in the novel 10 pts.

  • The response letter from the other character to your character 10 pts

  • A newspaper article featuring something that happens to your character 15 pts

  • Souvenirs and mementos with details explanations 15 pts

  • A personal reflection on how your character’s actions and personality

reflect the novel’s enduring question of social status and prestige 15 pts

Organization/Appearance

  • Literary scrapbook is organized and visually appealing 10 pts

  • Scrapbook cover is illustrated and includes character’s name, book title,

author’s name and your name 5pts

Mechanics

  • Written work is mainly free of mechanical errors 20 pts.

Group Presentation

  • You presented to your group and evaluated your group members 15pts.

Total Possible Points: 160

Requirement #1 Scrapbook Cover (5pts) Due: ___________________

The Scrapbook cover should be illustrated to reflect the main character who created it. The Cover must include:



  • The character’s name

  • The title of the book

  • The author’s name

  • Your name

  • Illustrations related to or of your character

Requirement #2 Character Fact Sheet (15pts) Due:_____________________

The fact sheet should be typed or hand written neatly on separate paper. Title each section of the fact sheet. The fact sheet must include:



  • 10 things you know about this character (details about his/her life, schooling, work, troubles, etc)

  • 5-10 details about this character’s appearance (physical features, clothing, etc) Draw a picture of this character.

  • 3 challenges this character faces (other people, fears, work related etc)

  • 5-10 personality traits of this character

Write a journal entry from the character’s point of view that gives a summary of what is happening in the character’s life along with his/her feelings. Include the events and his/her reactions to the events.

Write in first person. Use these sentence stems to aid you in your writing. You need not include them all. These are guides to help you relay what is happening and how the character feels about these events.


  • I had a great day because…

  • I can’t believe that….

  • I am so proud of… because

  • I think that what…. did today was wrong/right because…

Write from the character’s perspective showing their reactions to the events

Each journal will be written at the end of each stage.

Requirement #4 Letter from your character to another Due: ___________

Write a letter from your character and address to another character in the story. Describe a problem or major plot issue that affects both characters. Give the details from you character’s point of view. Write in complete paragraphs.



Requirement #5 Response letter Due:___________

Write a response from the second character’s point of view to your character. Describe the possible solution to the problem or feelings about the event your character has described. Write in complete paragraphs.



Requirement #6 Newspaper Article Due: ___________

After learning how to write a newspaper article with the correct components and layout, write an article about your character. It should feature something that happened to your character in the novel.

The assignment should look like a page of a newspaper; therefore, it must:


Requirement #7 Souvenirs and Mementos Due ____________

Draw, create, collect or find at least 5 souvenirs that the main character would have put into the scrapbook. These objects should reflect events in the story or important aspects of your character. (ex. Miss Havisham’s necklace, Estella’s fan, Pip’s hat or cane, Joe’s anvil, Magwitch’s leg irons). What might they have kept as memories? Objects and drawings must fit inside the scrapbook. Include a complete paragraph explanation next to each object describing its signifance.



Requirement #8 Personal Reflection Due_______________

Upon completing the novel, reflect upon the character you have chosen. How does he/she reflect the theme of social status and prestige? Discuss how the personality and actions of your character show the various differences in the poor versus the rich during the Victorian Age. Consider life style, dress, behaviors, and treatment of others.
