Lesson 4.02

Here’s an Inside Scoop to help you with your 4.02 assignment. When you finish your assignment for this lesson, it will look just like this! The only difference is you will write your Text Comparison Organizer and reflection paragraph will be about two different articles. You will read about traveling to Mars, we read about drilling oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

You will read two articles on the same topic and identify the different evidence that is used by each author. Then, you will write a reflection explaining your analysis.

  1. View the grading rubric as you complete your assignment. This is your guide to a super submission. (See below!)

  2. Read 2 articles on the same topic…(ours is about Drilling for Oil, yours will be about traveling to Mars)

  3. Fill the Text Comparison Chart graphic organizer

  4. Write a reflection paragraph that directly COMPARES the two articles.

READ these TWO ARTICLES for THIS LESSON:

COMPLETE this Text COMPARISON Chart:

TOPIC

Both articles discuss whether oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico is a good idea, but do NOT agree

Source 1:

Drilling for Oil—A Slippery Mistake by Jeff Branson

Source 2:

Oil—The Smart Choice by Jenn Sanders

Evidence 1:

Drilling for oil can cause spills that have devastating environmental effects.

Evidence 1:

Stopping oil drilling would close businesses and put thousands of people out of work.

Evidence 2:

The U.S. oil industry is not a major contributor to the overall economy.

Evidence 2:

The cost of alternative energies will not decrease without oil as competition.

Evidence 3:

Alternative energies will decrease in cost and create more jobs than oil.

Evidence 3:

An independent commission has made many improvements that protect the environment and workers.

Write a reflection paragraph that directly COMPARES the two articles.

Answer the following questions. Be sure to use complete sentences.

1. Did the authors have similar or opposing views? The author’s have opposing views. Jeff is against drilling and Jenn is for drilling.

2. Did the authors use the same points of comparison? Explain with examples. Yes, they use “alternative energies” and “economy/jobs” as a similar points of comparison. For example, Jenn says that without oil drilling thousands of people will be without jobs, but Jeff says that alternative energies will create more jobs than just oil alone.

3. Did the authors support their views in the same or different ways? The authors support their views in the same way. They make a claim and then support it with an example. Did both focus most on appeals to logic or to emotion? Both authors try to appeal to logic rather than emotion. Turn these questions and answers into PARAGRAPH FORM so that you have a REFLECTIVE paragraph comparing the TWO ARTICLES:

Write your REFLECTIVE, COMPARISON PARAGRAPH HERE:

“Drilling for Oil-A Slippery Mistake” by Jeff Branson and “Oil-The Smart Choice” by Jenn Sanders are both articles about off shore oil drilling. Though both articles are similar in topic, the authors differ in opinion about the topic at hand…off shore oil drilling. In each article, the authors discuss topics related to offshore drilling such as the environment, jobs, the economy, and alternative energy sources. Both authors choose to focus on examples and facts to sway the reader’s opinion rather than focusing on emotions. No matter how similar their presentation of the facts, the facts are clear that Jeff feels off shore drilling is a huge mistake and Jenn is completely for it.
