Assessment Details

Use the table below to provide details of assessments designed to cater for students across the full range of abilities in order to show evidence of their learning against the Achievement Standards. This is a guide only. Teachers should select assessment types appropriate to their context and unit of work.



Assessment Type - Assessment of Learning

Description of Summative Assessment

Assessment conditions for example, task type, word length, time allocated, supervision.


Assessment for Learning (Formative assessment)

Assignment - Informative

Students will undertake an introductory assignment in order to gain knowledge and understanding about the impact of the discovery of gold in Victoria and the Eureka Stockade.


Written in complete sentences.

Class and homework




Peer and teacher

Critical Writing - Persuasive

Using at least two references, students will construct an analysis/argument in essay form. A choice of questions will be offered.


Time allocation: double lesson.

Written 400 words.

Teacher supervision


A plan and a draft.

Debate - Persuasive

Teams of student will organise and stage a debate about an issue raised by their study of the gold fields and the Eureka Stockade.


Time allocation: 3 lessons

Debaters to coach students in debating skills.

Film review - Persuasive

After viewing an appropriate film, students will critically assess the value of the film to their learning.


Written: 400 words

1 week


A plan and a draft

Oral presentation - Persuasive

After viewing Peter Lalor’s famous Bakery Hill speech

students will prepare a speech about an issue in Australian society about which each feel deeply.


Oral presentation – 5 minutes


Consideration of context, and purpose and audience

Research project - Inquiry

Students develop appropriate questions to guide an inquiry about people, events, developments, places, systems and challenges.


Written: 400 words

Oral: 5 minutes

2 weeks


Formative assessment throughout the process of Guided Inquiry

Sources analyses – Analytical/ Evaluative

Students examine (interpret, analyse and evaluate) primary and/or secondary sources to determine their purpose and different viewpoints.


Time allocation 1 lesson.

Supervised by teacher



4 Questions: Who, When, Why, Type on a given set of sources

Other, for example, Multi-modal presentation











Students will reflect upon each summative task, using an appropriate reflection model: Mrs Potter’s Questions, Six Hat Review. This will form the basis for Assessment as Learning.
