The Christian Peace Shelf is a selection of Herald Press books and pamphlets devoted to the promotion of Christian peace principles and their applications. The editor (appointed by the Mennonite Central Committee Peace Section) and an editorial board from the Brethren in Christ Church, the General Conference Mennonite Church, the Mennonite Brethren Church, and the Mennonite Church, represent the historic concern for peace within these constituencies.

Jean-Michel Hornus was born ins Montauban, Tarn-et­Garonne, France, on October 10, 1926. He has earned degrees in philosophy, Syriac, and theology from universities and theological colleges in Toulouse, Lyon, Paris, and Mont­pellier, and from Union Theological Seminary in New York.

In 1952 Hornus was ordained as a minister in the French Reformed Church. Since then he was held several pastorates, including one (from 1953 to 1958) in the French-speaking evangelical church in Beirut, Lebanon. The contacts which he established at that time led to his being recalled to that region in the late 1960s by the Association for Theological Educa­tion in the Middle East. Between 1967 and 1970 he served as its first Executive Secretary.

From 1957 to 1961 Hornus was a fellow of the Centre Na­tional de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris, which supported his researches into the history of early Christian thought. Sub­sequent academic assignments have included lecturing in philosophy at the Free Protestant "College Cévenol" at Le Chambon-sur-Lignon and serving as associate professor of church history and missiology at the Faculté réformée de thCologie, Aix-en-Provence. For three years he was also university chaplain at the University of Strasbourg.



Hornus has been a member of the French Fellowship of


Reconciliation since its reorganization in 1945. From 1974 to 1976 he edited its periodical Cahiers de la Récortcildatiort. He was one of the founding members of the Parti Socialiste unifié (PSU), for which he was a candidate in the 1973 national elec­tions.

In the autumn of 1979 Hornus began his present assign­ment as Lecturer in the Theology of Mission and Ecumenism at the Selly Oak Colleges, Birmingham, England, in suc­cession to Bishop Lesslie Newbigin.
