In recent years, historians and archaeologists have uncovered evidence that the legend of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and the idyllic Camelot may have been based on real people and events. The makers of the 2004 film claim that they are presenting a historically accurate version of the Arthurian legend. At the end of the movie, you will reflect on this issue. Was King Arthur real or a legend?

  1. What was Arthur’s relationship with Guinevere? Who was she? How did they meet?

  1. How was Merlin portrayed? What “sacrifice” did he make?

  1. What was Arthur’s relationship with Lancelot and Gawain? How did they feel about Arthur and about Guinevere?

  1. What about other aspects of the Arthurian legend? Is there any reference to the quest for the Holy Grail, knights in shining armor, playful jousts and tournaments?

  1. How might the legend of King Arthur have evolved from this “historic” adaptation?

  1. What do you think: Is King Arthur real or not? Why or why not? Base your answer on both historical evidence and textual evidence.
