King Arthur Problem

Back in time in the land of Camelot, King Arthur had a beautiful daughter who was of the age to be married. Naturally, King Arthur wanted only the best for his daughter. With this in mind, he decided that he was going to choose a suitable husband for her. A decree went out to all of the kingdom. He issued a call to all interested men to become the husband of his daughter. King Arthur expected very few to reply because the duties of the new prince would be many and difficult, for the kingdom was very large.

King Arthur was very surprised and overwhelmed to find that 177 men showed up on the appointed day. He was infuriated when he realized that the majority of the men were there only to inherit his enormous wealth. In fact, he went into a rage and had all of the young (and some not so young) men form a large circle. He designated one of the young men #1 and gave each of the rest of them an increasing number going counterclockwise around the circle until he got to the last man who was given #177.

He went back to number #1 and said, “You live”. He then went to man #2 and said, “You die”. Man #3 heard “You live”. The king alternated this pattern until all of the men were eliminated except the final man. This man became the groom for his daughter. If you were in the land of Camelot and had shown up to ask for the hand of King Arthur’s daughter in marriage, which position would you have put yourself in so that you would have been the last remaining person?

King Arthur's Knights

King Arthur sat at the Round Table on three successive evenings with his knights - Beleobus, Caradoc, Driam, Eric, Floll and Galahad - but on no occassion did any person have as his neighbor one who had sat next to him before.

On the first evening they sat in alphabetical order round the table. But afterwards King Arthur arranged the two next sittings so that he might have Beleobus as near to him as possible and Galahad as far away from him as could be managed.

How did he seat the knights to the best advantage, remembering the rule that no knight may have the same neighbor twice?
