This is a story of betrayal, it tells about a friend who kills in power. Julius Caesar, who was part of the first Triumvirate, was killed by his own friend Brutus. His power was increasing tremendously, enough that some people thought he was dictator. Brutus conspired with many others against Caesar that had effect in his death. Brutus was scared that Caesar will be crowned king, but he doesn’t have any evidence. All he knows is that Caesar has turned down the crown three times. Brutus uses parallel structure in saying “It’s not that I don’t like Caesar, I just love Rome more.” This shows that Brutus really loves Rome more than his friend. And it ended out; Caesar was stabbed to death by Brutus. After Caesars death, the senate sends both Brutus and Anthony to speak in their defense. Marc Anthony and Brutus’s speech is persuasive rhetoric to them, but Anthony’s speech is more effective. He was better at persuading the people of Rome.
After the death of Julius Caesar, Brutus talks to the people of Rome and explains to them that Caesar is dead, and the people of Rome did not seem very happy with Brutus. Brutus was trying to convince the people of Rome that is was for the better. Brutus uses parallel structure in saying “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I love Rome more.” This shows that Brutus loves Rome more than his friend Caesar. Then Brutus shows the dagger used to kill Caesar and says “Whith this I depart, that, as I slew my best friend lover for the good of Rome, I have the same dagger for myself, when it shall please my country to need my death.” He is telling the people of Rome that the dagger will trade his life when Rome feels the need. The people of Rome seem to accept this. And end with shouting “Let Brutus live! Live Live” This speech Brutus shows that he wanted Caesar to live. The people of Rome now believe Brutus from his speech. But when Marc Anthony presents his speech... will they believe him? Brutus’s speech is good, but it can’t quite compare to Marc Anthony’s.
Marc Anthony’s speech was really amazing. When he walks out, he actually has Julius Caesar in his arms. When Marc Anthony gives his speech to Rome, he tells the people everything about Brutus. Rome is not very happy with it at all. They come out with an uproar of things they want to do to Brutus. The people of Rome do not want Brutus to rule them after they heard his dishonest speech. They don’t trust him and they never will. Marc Antony says “Come I speak in Caesar’s funeral. He was my friend, faithful and just to me; but, Brutus says he was ambitious, and Brutus is an honorable man.” Marc Anthony is being sarcastic in his speech. He doesn’t think Brutus is an honorable man at all. The speeches make Caesar seem like a good man. Because of Brutus, the people thought that Caesar was only about power. But soon enough, Marc Anthony comes out to the people of Rome carrying Caesar’s body, and he reveals the truth. Marc Anthony uses rhetoric to persuade the people that Caesar was ambitious, and Brutus and his conspirators were actually the tyrants. His speech shows that he really did like Julius Caesar. And he was a good man. The people of Rome know that is Brutus is lying; he is going to keep lying. They do not want someone like Brutus to rule them.
I feel like the people of Rome were more influenced by Marc Anthony’s speech. I think the people of Rome really liked Brutus when he gave his speech and after, but after Marc Anthony gave his speech, the people didn’t like him. When Brutus walked out to give his speech, it seemed like he didn’t give the truth. He only said what the people wanted to hear even if it wasn’t the truth. The people liked that, until they found out it was all a lie. He says “Whith this I depart, that, as I slew my best lover for the good of Rome, I have the same dagger for myself, when it shall please my country to need my death.” Brutus knows the people won’t want him dead. So the people of Rome reply in shouting “Live Brutus Live!” The crown is then given to Brutus, and the people fully support him. Brutus has already got the crowd going… with many emotions throughout Rome. This builds up for when Marc Antony comes out to give his speech. I feel like when Marc Anthony gave his speech he spoke with confidence, power and compassion. He didn’t care if the people didn’t approve of him so he said whatever he wanted. Marc Anthony says “For I have neither writ no words, nor worth action, or utterance, nor the power of speech to stir men’s blood; I only speak right on.” This is showing that he speaks what he feels, when he feels. I think the people of Rome really liked that. I felt they also really like that he was honest. It seems like they can trust Marc Anthony. And not Brutus. Brutus may have given a really well written speech; But Marc Anthony dominates with his honesty.
