Part I: Title Page
Please provide a title page which includes a title, your name, your grade, the date the project was handed in, and original art.
Part II: Short Answer

Answer the following questions in full sentences using examples from the text or from your own research. Some answers may be half a page in length.

  1. Explain the statement, “All samurai were expected to live by the code of bushido”. Give examples of how some people today follow the ways of the Samurai.

  2. Why do you think most of the information historians find about the Edo period are about samurai males? Give examples from the text and class discussion to justify your answer.

  3. Explain how the combination of Eastern morality and Western skills helped Japan become modern and progressive.

  4. In short answer format explain why Fukuzawa Yukichi believed that the, “Government under the Meiji oligarchy was not different than under the Tokugawa shoguns.” Make certain to give examples from the text and class discussions to justify your answer.

  5. How did the government of Japan use the traditional belief that the emperor was the grandson of the sun goddess to their advantage? Give examples from the text and/or class discussions.

Part III: Essay

Choose ONE (1) of the three topics provided. This essay should be 1 – 2 pages in length. Use examples from the text and/or your own research.

  1. During the Edo period, the shogun closed Japan off from the rest of the world and minimized its contact with the outside in order to retain power. In essay format describe the effects of this isolation on Japan and its citizens. Be certain to give examples, both positive and negative, using lessons from the textbook and class discussions.

  2. During the Meiji period life for the Ainu people became very difficult, as they had to sign a treaty that allowed Japan to use their land and resources. The Ainu people were forced to change their way of life and were almost wiped out as a nation. Do you think the situation of the Ainu was similar to the situation that the First Nations people faced in North America? Explain your answer by providing examples.

  3. Throughout the Meiji Period, the government of Japan wanted to unify the country. How did they attempt to do this? Did it work? Give your answer in essay format. Give examples from the text and class discussions to justify your answer.
