Publications History


The initial meeting of the Canadian Society of Military Medals and Insignia (CSMMI) was on March 21, 1965.

The first Newsletter (Number 1) was issued on October 27, 1965 and then monthly to issue Number 224 in November 1992. The newsletter contained society business, summary of events, short articles of general interest regarding medals and badges and personal collection advertisements.

Index reference NL211-07 means an item on page 7 in Newsletter 211.

The Journal of the Society was issued quarterly from Volume 1, Sep. 1965 through Volume 19, Dec. 1983. Volume 1 and 2 were paged from 1. Pages were then numbered consecutively from Volume 2, No. 2. Page 1015 was printed with Volume 17 (4), Dec. 1981. Reference to an article is a page number, for example page 186.

After 16 years as Editors, Don Barnett and Ross Irwin were pensioned off at the end of 1981 and the publication program changed.

There were 4 issues of the Journal in 1982 and 2 issues in 1983. Article cited 820122 means it is in the 1982 Journal, issue No. 1 and on page 22. Each issue begins at page 1 after 1981.

Journals were issued annually (single issue) for 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987-88. An article cited 8412 is on page 12 in 1984 Journal. There were no publications from 1989 through 1992.

Journals were again issued quarterly for 1993 through 2000. Articles are identified by year, issue and page - 93F03.

There were no publications in 2001 and 2002. Journals began again in 2003 and page numbers were numbered consecutively. For example, 04102, is an article on page 102 issued in 2004.

Miscellaneous publications issued were Membership lists in 1988, 1995 and 2004. An Index to publications was printed in 1979 for Volumes 1 to 15. Special anniversary issues were printed in 1980 and 1990. An "S" indicates a special sheet issued on badges.

Some publications may be available at the Toronto Reference Library, Hamilton Public Library and the library of the Canadian War Museum.

Publications Background
