Unit 5: The Second World War

Unit Overview Sheet
Unit Question: What price will we pay for success?
Content focus: Main focus on technology, strategy, and tactics used during the war. Some attention paid to significant political events, especially those that impact events on the battlefield.
Skill focus: essay writing – good thesis, organized body topic sentences, transitional phrases, and solid conclusion in addition to essay stamina and the ability to write two essays in a single sitting.
Summative Assessments:

  • March 4th / 5th you will write two essays in one period. (I mean it this time!) Only one of these essays will be graded. At the end of the exam I will let you know which of the essays I will grade for credit.

    • The thesis will be graded on the essay that does not get graded in full.

    • You will be expected to write an essay on the causes of the war as well as an essay on the current unit.

  • As with the last unit, there will be smaller summative assessments which will focus on essay writing.


Formative assessments:

  • Bellringers

  • Terms quizzes: 2 poor quizzes in a row will result in an overtime assignment to work on all terms covered up to the most recent quiz. This may include terms from last unit as well.

  • Peer review/editing of thesis statements, outlines, or essays


Focus Questions:

  • Assess the significance of either air power or naval power in deciding the outcome of the Second World War.

  • Analyze the effectiveness of the alliance between the USSR and the other allies during the Second World War.

  • Analyze the effectiveness of the alliance between Germany and the other Axis powers during the Second World War.

  • Assess the role of key decision makers in turning the Second World War into a total war.

  • Evaluate the significance of strategic battlefront planning in the success of the Allies in the Second World War.
