http://www.thisishull.co.uk/ from 1999 (but not BMDs?) >
31 Dec 1999 War veteran honoured
The funeral has taken place of distinguished war veteran and long-serving member of Humberside Police Mounted Section Alfred Knaggs.

Mr Knaggs, who was 81, was a well-known member of the force for many years, and was involved in the training of young recruits while serving as a member of the Police Equine Display Team.

He joined the Navy in the 1930s, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. A fine athlete, he won the Combined Services Light Heavyweight boxing title and was pressed to turn professional but found himself with a bigger fight on his hands with the coming of the Second World War.

He joined one of the Royal Navy's most famous fighting ships, HMS Rodney, and was involved in the sinking of the German battleship Graf Spee.

It was in the Pacific serving in HMS Ark Royal that he was mentioned in dispatches.

He met his wife Margaret in Scotland during the war and with the cessation of hostilities joined the Glasgow police.

He eventually returned to his home town of Hull, serving in the Police Mounted Section before retiring in 1968 to run a successful riding school at Ganstead.

He leaves his widow, a son Arnold and an adopted daughter Mary.

They were attacked by Kami-Kaze fighters, the Japanese suicide pilots who sacrificed their lives by crashing explosive-packed planes on enemy ships.

His life-long friend was killed in a gunnery position midships but PO Knaggs continued firing, bringing down the Japanese plane and saving the ship from serious damage.

15 Jul 2000 Teenager found hanged
An investigation has been launched after a teenager was found hanged in Hull Prison.

Shane Williamson, 19, of Southcoates Avenue, east Hull, was discovered with a ligature round his neck yesterday.

Prison health care staff and outside paramedics attended but Mr Williamson was pronounced dead at the scene by the prison doctor.

The coroner has been informed and a full prison investigation will be carried out by a senior governor unconnected to Hull Prison.

Mr Williamson was serving a nine-month sentence for aggravated vehicle taking.

Denise Knaggs, Shane's mum, said: "I just can't understand what has happened.

"Shane was looking forward to coming home in five weeks."
31 Aug 2000 A victim of despair
Once again this newspaper has the unpleasant task of reporting how another parent's world as been torn apart by drugs.

Denise Knaggs' story is all too sorry and all too familiar.

Her son Shane became hooked on heroin at the tender age of 16 and his life quickly spiralled out of control.

As a loving mother Mrs Knaggs tried desperately to get her son back on the straight and narrow – at one point she locked him in his bedroom for 24 hours a day, for six weeks in an effort to wean him off the drugs he craved so much.

But her efforts were in vain and he was soon back on the streets seeking out his dealer.

In a heart-rending letter to the Mail, Mrs Knaggs tells how she was actually relieved when he was jailed for a second time because she thought it would give him a chance to recover.

Little did she know he would not come out of Hull Prison alive.

Five weeks short of serving a nine month sentence for aggravated burglary and taking a car without consent he was found hanged in his cell after apparently taking his own life.

In her letter Mrs Knaggs calls on the prison authorities to provide more counselling for addicts like Shaun.

And she says that if she can somehow prevent any other mother suffering in the same way she has, she will feel better.

Like many others who find themselves in her unfortunate position, Mrs Knaggs has shown tremendous courage.

But even her tragic tale will not prevent people dealing in death while there is money to be made.

As you read your Mail today, someone's son or daughter – maybe yours – will be taking sanctuary in a quick fix.

Evidence of the drugs menace is everywhere, from the ghostly young girls selling their bodies to earn enough cash to get high, to the crooks who, thieve, rob and con their miserable way through life.

Much is being done in East Yorkshire to tackle the problem but still these tragedies occur.

The drugs trade is driven by greed and desperation in equal measure.

And while those two very strong human traits exist, there will be dealers, addicts, heartache and misery.

Meanwhile victims like Denise Knaggs will be left with very little but a feeling of hopelessness.

DRUGS DESPAIR

Devastated Denise Knaggs today told how she lost her 19-year-old son after he was sucked into the seedy world of drugs.

Shane Williamson died in Hull Prison just weeks before he was due to be released.

Miss Knaggs fought back tears as she opened her heart to This is Hull about her three-year torment which sadly ended in tragedy.

And she begged the authorities to do more to protect vulnerable teenagers who are thrown behind bars.

Miss Knaggs, of Southcoates Avenue, Holderness Road, east Hull, said her son was first introduced to drugs when he was detained in Hull Prison's D Wing for young offenders, aged just 16.

And despite numerous desperate attempts by herself - including locking Shane in his bedroom for six weeks - the drugs maintained their vice-like grip on her son.

When he was sentenced to nine months for aggravated burglary and taking a car without consent in October 1999, he promised he would not fall into the same trap again.

But six weeks ago in a final letter to his mum - written hours before he was found in his cell with a ligature around his neck - he wrote of how much he loved her and how he wanted to do what he thought was best.

Miss Knaggs, 41, said: "Shane assured me he wouldn't take drugs again. We were very close and he wouldn't lie to me. He told me he didn't want to put me through all the heartache again and was determined to stay off them.

"He was so excited about coming out and had planned to start a new life, but he was so scared of getting back into drugs.

"His depression started after he was sent into an isolation unit, because he had been in a brawl.

"He hated being on his own, even from being a little boy. He would have started to think about things, and he just wanted to do what was best.

"It is about time something is done to help these people in prison because they are not scum, they are somebody's child that has been roped into the sordid life of drugs."

The former Andrew Marvell student - once described as being happy go lucky with a marvellous sense of humour - became a completely different character and lost weight through drug use.

His mum fought a constant battle to ween him off his habit, only to see him give in to his addiction time and time again.

Alan Procter, duty governor at Hull Prison said: "We have got a structure in place to advise prisoners who come into prison with drug problems.

"We have schemes such as Counselling Assessment Referral Advice and Thorough Care to help reduce the problem of prison drugs.

"CAROT picks up the problems of the offenders from the beginning, starting at the prison gates and following them into the community after their release."

His comments were backed by Geoff Ogden, senior co-ordinator of East Riding Drug Action Team who said: "Together with all the agencies in CAROT, we monitor the offenders from arrest to release, but we will be looking at what action has been taken with this particular tragedy."

29 Sep 2000 Home hazard leads to fine
A housing charity has been fined £1,500 after an elderly resident with severe mental problems was hospitalised when he drank from an unattended bottle of cleaning fluid.

Alfred Knaggs, 84, was rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary after the incident at the Orchard Garth residential home, Hessle High Road, west Hull, in October last year.

Hull magistrates heard how Mr Knaggs, who also suffers from dementia, was found with the bottle of sterilising fluid during a fire alert at the home.

Emma Pearce, prosecuting for Kingston upon Hull City Council's occupational health and safety section, said staff discovered Mr Knaggs standing next to a unlocked cleaning trolley holding the bottle to his mouth.

He was admitted to a short-stay ward at the hospital for treatment before being released under a 48-hour supervision order. He later made a full recovery.

Miss Pearce said a follow-up visit by council officials to the home, which operates 33 beds for high-dependency elderly residents with mental problems, uncovered a catalogue of health and safety breaches.

"Potentially dangerous chemicals had not been secured at all times and staff were not properly trained or sufficiently warned about their potential hazards," she added.

Miss Pearce said Mr Knaggs had previously tried to eat soap and shampoo in his room and these items had subsequently been removed.

The Anchor Trust, which operates the Orchard Garth home, pleaded guilty to failing to ensure sufficient health and safety precautions were in place.

Duncan McGill, for Anchor Trust, said the non profit-making charity took responsibility for the incident.

"The trust has initiated a number of new protocols to address any shortcomings in their homes.

"A new manager has been appointed at the home in question as a result of deficiencies at the time of the incident," he added.

Mr McGill said the trust, which operates 90 residential homes across the country, had never been prosecuted for a health and safety offence before.

"All efforts are being made to provide a safe environment for the residents in their homes," he said.

Magistrates also ordered the trust to pay the council's £624 costs.

After the case, the council's health and safety technical officer Steve Mills said: "The consequences here could have been for more serious and we are just glad that Mr Knaggs made a full recovery."

28 Apr 2001 Elvis the tin opener at No 1

First-time published poet Peter Knaggs is celebrating after knocking children's favourite Harry Potter from the top-spot in a city bestsellers' list.

In a literary David versus Goliath battle, Peter's first volume of poetry, called Cowboy Hat, replaced Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkhaban on the Waterstone's hitlist.

The list is a weekly chart of sales at the bookseller's store in Jameson Street, Hull.

The 33-year-old told the Mail: "I was in the bottom group for English at school and now I've got a book out.

"But I don't really believe in the academic study of writing – it can squeeze your passion out."

He added: "Who wants to write about Greek gods? I'd rather write about my tin opener called Elvis."

And Peter's focus on the mundane has brought him to the attention of more established writers.

He recently shared a stage with leading poet Simon Armitage.

Peter said: "He told me he had read The Radio to his wife, Sue.

"That poem is about my dad not being able to afford to buy me a birthday present, so he gave me a radio he'd won in a raffle. He gave the same radio to my sister on her birthday."

Cowboy Hat, which features 60 poems of similar quirkiness, is published by halfacrown and costs £6.99.
